It has mexican flavors like chili and cumin with a subtle taste of lime. I really enjoyed it! I just would've preferred for my batch to be just a little more fresh and juicy. For the sides I got rice and beans and they were just okay. The rice just tasted like plain parboiled rice, and the beans tasted like canned ranchero beans. The flavor of the beans were good tho. See, this was my 2nd visit here. Last time I tried to defend them on saying that maybe I didn't order something good since they have so much potential. This time however I ordered a chicken chipotle empanada and the roasted chicken and rice. Once again Pollo Campero failed. Service is just eh, nothing special it is similar to any fast food joint. Food was again, disgusting. I tried to put my original Tex-Mex roots aside but with all food tasting aside, still did not delivered. Char-grilled chicken is one of my favorite comfort foods and Pollo Campero is the real deal. The chicken is nicely grilled with a unique and zesty spice mix with lots of lime. The charro beans and Cole slaw are also excellent. They give you a choice of dinner rolls or tortillas- we opted for the rolls and they're delicious! This was my 1st visit here and I came back the next day because the grilled chicken hit the spot and the customer service ended on such a high note! The service started off a bit shaky because I ordered grill chicken, Campero beans and Campero rice. When I got my order I checked the bag and I saw an order of fried chicken. I was cool about it though because it is such a easy fix. I figured they would just look at my receipt and switch it out. I think a woman named Margarita was behind the counter and she was very friendly and helpful with my small issue. However, the general manager Daniel Palin was there and he asked was everything okay. I let him know my order wasn't all the way right but Margarita was on the case. He apologized for the mix up and we laughed. I told him it was my first time to Houston and that I couldn't wait to eat because I was starving! He asked, "Have you eaten here before?" I stated I had not. He said you're gonna love the chicken. He asked the person who was re-packing my bag to throw some fried chicken in my bag as well so I could taste it. He was so friendly and I really appreciated his great customer service. Once I got back to my hotel room and I wiped out the chicken for my family the grilled chicken was so flavorful and juicy, especially for a chain restaurant. The Campero beans were really delicious as well. The Campero rice did not even make it on to my plate because my hubby and my 2 years-old gobbled it all up! Won't be returning to this establishment, after basically being denied service (was told my food was stolen, was told my current order was a previous order) food is ok, but not worth the extra curricular activity from the staff. I was looking for a semi-healthy place to eat in the area....and that is hard to achieve in that part of town. They establishment gives you a choice between fried or grilled chicken. I went with the grilled chicken meal. I chose the second option of a 2-piece which is the breast and a wing. I was super excited when I saw that they offered Yuca fries...I love yuca!! Then my last option was tortillas or bread...very blah! The chicken was ok...it lacked flavor. Combo to take home, everything looked good for the first two weeks, next order the third week , staff was a little more aggressive, and didn't seem to be glaad to be at work, but as I make home we started dinner with my wife and daughter, my chicken was fine, my wife's chicken had blood, and it was still pink, instead of calling or doing a survey, I came to talk To their management, when the lady at the front called him out, he came out and looked at me as I was bothering him, I let him know the issue, and many people that know know I will not takE any free food or anything like that, but this gUy had an attitude, and said to me oh ok, so I asked when does your GM come in? He said I am the GM, which I found strange, his demeanor towards me was as if he was speaking into to one of his employees, never the less he offered no apology when I told him my wife got sick from it, we threw away the last five piece, nothing there was nothing said after that, he starts walking away so I asked what was he going to do about it he said; I will pass it to the top, the chicken doesn't come out raw, I said I have a pit of it, but by thIs point I see where this is going, and walked out. Today was my 2nd time visiting and my visit was horrible. The cashier Heidy provided poor customer service. She had an attitude and then tried to argue and tell me what i ordered and it wasnt correct. Then she walked away without finishing my order. Sadly the manager didnt handle the situation appropriately. He went on as if nothing happened. No one checked on me to see if i was ok or if my food was ok. This place has very tasty chicken. They used to have a different menu, but I guess it didn't have enough public, so they reduce the menu, now all drinks are free refill. Very flavorful and grilled to perfection. I like the different sides available. I got the beans and the rice. Both are good, but not necessarily the best you will ever have. I also had to try the empanadas, which were pretty good. Also, I loooove the yucca fries! Sooo good! The yucca will make me return alone. I opted for the side of tortilla with my meal. I have spent most of my life visiting Guatemala and eating at pollo campero, and I'm sorry but this is NOT pollo campero quality. The chicken seasoning is right but the chicken is not near as good as in Guatemala. As if it's just the same crap chicken you can get anywhere in the US. What really bothers me is the sauces. No agridulce. No ranch. Just a bunch of odd sauce choices, and none suited to kids. Regardless it was still good, but I'd rather fly to Guatemala and eat there. I went today and ordered my food. It was supposed to come with a tortilla, but it didn't. So I kindly went up to the cashier and told her. And she accused me of lying, saying that she did give me a tortilla. I brought her my tray of food and there was no tortilla. We love to eat here! My husband and I always use the drive thru and order the half chicken special which includes 4 pieces of chicken, 2 sides, and a roll or a tortilla. We used a coupon on our initial visit bc we weren't sure what Peruvian chicken would taste like and have returned several times since. Their chicken is very flavorful! We've yet to be disappointed. He always orders the grilled. (You gotta squeeze the lime over it) and I always get half grilled and half fried. I always have leftovers! Love the yuca fries, mashed potatoes, and corn. Hubby likes the rice, and mash. The coupons are such a great deal and in my opinion the BEST coupons (compared to other drive thru restaurants that skimp on portions if a coupon is used) We love the mango drink, awesome! The words "rice" and "fries" sound similar so I suggest using the entire term "yuca fries" for distinction. Staff is always friendly! Service is quick. I had my first taste on Friday when a co-worker brought me an empanada and some grilled chicken back when she went to lunch there. I was hooked on the first bite. I took my best friend the next day and now have her hooked. Love the campero sauce it is great on the Yucca fries. Took 3 empanadas and yucca fries home for my husbands dinner and they reheated beautifully in the toaster oven. They serve fresh corn tortillas with the chicken plates and they compliment the chicken nicely. I would pass on the bread they offer as it is a basic store bought variety and does nothing for the great flavor of the chicken. The only thing I didn't care for was there flan which was just okay. Service is top notch especially since this is more on the fast food side. If you eat there they actually bring your food out to you on real plates. read more
