I stopped by Pollo Tropical for lunch hoping for a little nostalgia -- a taste of those generous, flavorful chicken portions they used to serve back during the pandemic days. Unfortunately, this visit was more "meh" than "muy bien." The tables were clean-ish, but not quite wiped down. I ordered the chicken quesadilla wrap combo with plantains and a Diet Coke. The wrap was smaller than I remembered, with chicken that was partly chewy and partly crunchy. My fiancée's chicken Caesar salad was mainly salad without a lot of chicken or Caesar dressing. On the bright side, the plantains were delicious -- warm, sweet, and the undeniable star of the meal. Unfortunately, the Diet Coke was flatter than a Florida highway. All told, $23 for two meals that didn't quite live up to their former glory. Not terrible, just unimpressive. If you're nearby and want something quick and basic, it'll do. Check your food before you leave. I come here often and they will give you the wrong size plate. Yesterday I ordered two large tropichops and a large fry. I saw the fries and asked at the window "is this a large?" maybe 8 fries ... and was immediately told "yes". I pulled away and looked at the rest of the order and was given two small sized tropichops. I went in to ask again and confirmed with the front counter I was given a small size in everything instead of the larger that I paid for. Also the containers are often sealed improperly. I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to this location. 20 minute wait to order and a 30 minute wait to receive my food. A whole 50 minutes to get...drum roll...chicken soup. Imagine having a 30 minute lunch break and you have to wait almost an hour for your food, you'd get reprimanded from your job for being late. If I wanted to spend an hour at a restaurant, I'd go to a proper sit down restaurant. They need to have more of a sense of urgency or even out the assembly line because the drive through line was whizzing by while the line inside was just stagnant. He then proceeded to not even look at me or respond to anything I said as I pulled up to the window. I'm very kind to service workers because I've been there so I'm not sure what his issue was. So, the last few months..the line for this place is always backed up. Usually my order comes up right. But this time, after waiting in the 27 minute line. Then 6 minutes at the window. The staff are typically really nice and efficient at getting you your order in a timely manner and more importantly just how you ordered it (this seems to be a problem for some other establishments). Pollo Tropical like some other Yelpers have noted: is a healthier alternative and offers an inexpensive, and quick taste of Caribbean cuisine. The portion sizes are pretty decent for one person and are almost always consistent in taste. My last experience there I ordered the Chicken and Rib combo with rice and beans and received a complimentary 1/4 chicken meal for completing their on-line survey! ***Tip:Take the 10 mins to fill out the survey, the 1/4 chicken meal is both delicious, filling and FREE if you complete the survey and redeem at your next visit***** They also offer a variety of sauces (guava BBQ is delightful) and onions as one of their featured toppings also available at no additional charge.
