I don't normally review chain restaurants, but I have a special appreciation for Pollo Tropical (particularly this location in Tampa). I honestly feel that their food is always fresh and the quality is incredibly consistent. I typically order a family meal with a whole chicken, the regular white rice, dinner rolls, and black beans. I feel that the food is truly satisfying/filling for a family of 3-4. The portion size is very reasonable, and I believe that on Mondays they still have their $15 family meal deal which is unbeatable. I also am obsessed with their cilantro garlic sauce, and I think that their plantains are pretty solid. Overall, Pollo Tropical is somewhere that I typically get takeout from and it's delicious each and every time! read more

Food is good but if you order for take-out, check your food before you leave. I've been ordering from them at least once a week for dinner for several months now. I purchase a whole chicken and a half chicken each time as I have big eaters in my home. Today I picked up my order and got only 1 breast piece in the container with the whole chicken, and none in the container with the 1/2 chicken (I asked for white and dark meat with my order). This in not right, and certainly not the first time this has happened. From now on, I will open the take-out bag and check before I leave. read more

I just wanted some of the fried plantains they say OK, I go to the window pay for my meal and at the window after I'm handed part of my order I am told that they are out of plantains and if I would like some thing else. I said no I would like a refund, the person at the window didn't seem to understand that I wanted a refund and told me to pull around and that they would take care of it I pulled around to the front of the store and waited for 10 minutes and no one helped me so I decided to leave. We went to the Pollo Tropical on Hillsboro Ave 30 minutes before closing. Just spent a whole day flying home and were starving. We both thought Taco Bell but said let's go and have a nice meal. Stopped today to pick up lunch for me and a friend. Wanted to put this review on their web site on the receipt but not the proper info was on receipt to do that so thought to put it here. I got a Cuban and the 1/4 chicken dinner. Figuring early lunch chicken shouldn't be too dried out yet. Cuban was soggy but good. The chicken was so dried out was uneatable. Only ate the rice and beans and threw the rest away. Not even sauce could save it. Also got the key lime pie and new dessert of guava parfait. Both of those at least was good but they didn't have to do anything to them. Hadn't gone for quite some time. Guess it's going to be another long time again. One of them saw me standing there and yelled out for someone. 7 minutes later a young lady comes out to take my order while everyone just stood there letting me wait. I ordered two tropichops one with no corn and add lettuce, and the other regular with everything on it. The lady messed up the order two times and threw away the food, but then I looked at the receipt and it didn't say no corn so she added corn and that's why she threw them away, but by the time we got our food there was like a chicken wings worth of chicken on my plate, and she forgot to add beans and lettuce on one of them. She seemed she didn't know what she was doing and she just gave us the beans and lettuce on the side. But my biggest complaint is that there was barely any chicken. A co-worker and I lunched here. Their specialty is cooking half chickens on an open flame grill. How that make it tropical is beyond me. It just tastes like grilled chicken and although one gets the impression that you will somehow experience a Caribbean type meal but nope. This place is more Mexican than anything else. Ordered at 5:45 pm and husband got home at 7:00 pm with dinner (about 1/2 hour time back and forth from home). My husband told me: * No one wanted to wait on him - he kept asking employees, too busy. Rating for Hillsborough Avenue location ONLY. Pollo Tropical is my all time favorite "fast" food chain restaurant. I love that if offers tasty, healthy options. I used to visit it years ago when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, and was thrilled when they finally decided to give it (another) shot in the Tampa area. You'll notice that "fast" is in quotes, because unfortunately it depends on which location you visit. Last night I walked in, waited in line without moving, then walked out. It seems like this location on Hillsborough Avenue is always understaffed. I usually try to go to the location on Waters Avenue - they have a better grasp on how to keep people moving along. read more
