This chain has been growing in the Tampa Bay area but this was the first one in town I think. Its the only one relatively close to my house so its my usual location to go when I want a TropiChop. This is fast food cuban food. Since we have such great Cuban food in my area, I usually do not make the trek here very often. The specialty at the restaurant is the TropiChop which features rice, beans, vegetables and a choice of meal. You can also order the meat with sides in an entree. Although chicken is the highlight, the preparations vary offering a wide variety of options ranging from salads to sandwiches and of course the bowls. The restaurant serves beer and has dessert on the menu. They also have a sauce bar that lets you customize your entrees to fit your taste. The cilantro garlic sauce is MY FAVE! This is a great place to go for weekday lunches. I always get the classic chicken sandwich. You get a side dish and a soda with it. Very reasonably priced and the sandwich is great! They do sometimes have a problem when I order it "plain", but it usually comes out right. Also -- whenever we go there it's always FREEZING! The AC is kicked down low and they have the fans on. I ordered two tropichops one with no corn and add lettuce, and the other regular with everything on it. The lady messed up the order two times and threw away the food, but then I looked at the receipt and it didn't say no corn so she added corn and that's why she threw them away, but by the time we got our food there was like a chicken wings worth of chicken on my plate, and she forgot to add beans and lettuce on one of them. She seemed she didn't know what she was doing and she just gave us the beans and lettuce on the side. But my biggest complaint is that there was barely any chicken. Furthermore, it was mostly rice and barely anything else and now I'm hungry an hour later. We want to be very supportive of Temple Terrace restaurants but it is very hard to do this a lot of the times. Last night we ordered out dinner at Pollo Tropical on Fowler. Ordered at 5:45 pm and husband got home at 7:00 pm with dinner (about 1/2 hour time back and forth from home). My husband told me: * No one wanted to wait on him - he kept asking employees, too busy. While the manager of this restaurant just stood around doing nothing. * When someone helped him - they said some of the food items we ordered are out of stock?!? Saturday night?!? o No yellow rice & vegs (really) o No rum sauce o No onions o Caesar Salad was two bites big! o Chicken was dried out - like they cooked it in the morning o Manager still just standing - he asked to speak to the manager and she came over and told him this is the way the restaurant is. She told him you should never order on line because your order will always be wrong! Really, again! o Oh, now we will cook your dinner - it will be a 15 minute wait. I really like Pollo Tropical. It still somewhat amazes me that I can order sweet plantains via a drive through. You can get healthy options and when the chicken is cooked well it's really delicious. With that being said I think I'm done visiting this particular location. The service hasn't been good here and my last visit was the worst. I had to wait several minutes for a cashier to appear and when he finally did he had no idea how to redeem a reward from the app, which meant more of a wait while he went and looked for help. When my food was ready they gave it to me for dine-in instead of to-go. The woman who was handing out the food couldn't understand me when I pointed out the error. When she finally realized what I was indicating she started insistently pointing at the order screen. No matter what it said I'm still going to want it to go! I think Pollo Tropical is a value hunters dream. It is a great value for the amount of food that you get, the food is delicious, and the menu has a good variety of menu items.. all just as great/delicious. There is one right by my school, so the other students and I are there weekly! I think everyone should try it out. Be warned though, once you try the food, you'll be hooked. I had to ask the staff to refill. The sauce station wasn't very clean. They may have understaff on the day. I tried tropichop for the first time. By the time you actually get to order their either out of something or not selling something which the business needs to update the menu . As a frequent visitor, good food at a great price. Tropichop bowls are great for lunch. Much better than fast food. I usually hit the Waters Ave location as it seems cleaner and better run than the Hillsborough Ave store. Food is comparable at both store, which is an accomplishment in any restaurant. I've had salads, a wrap, and a chicken Caesar salad. It makes me feel a bit better than going through Wendy's and getting a four piece. I never end up feeling like a fatty mcfat. The service is alright. Nothing remarkable. I remember when they used to bring your food to you. Now not so much. I'm not sure what happened. Also, if you order an extra chicken breast, or anything ala carte, they look at you like you're an alien. Finally, the last time I was there I got a raw piece of chicken, and the lady acted like I was putting her out to replace it. Even going as far as telling me it's impossible for their chicken to come out raw. I wish I would have snapped a picture. It was definitely too under done for someone to eat safely. I would expect an apology. Instead I got an argument. Keep in mind, the reason I come back is their garlic cilantro saunce, their curry mustard sauce, and their po-po sauce.. All amazingly tasty.. much better than say ketchup and yellow mustard. You can get Plantains... And you can get Beer. Its fast food, with waiter service and clearing but no tipping?! So that saves me 20% on the meal.. Thats substantial.
