The ambiance is definitely hole in the wall, on the nicer way of explaining it. The service? Fantastic. I know that this place has a huge following...I just don't know exactly how. Maybe the service? Salsa is good. Queso was different. Perhaps a different palate than mine. Grayish colored guacamole just doesn't work for me. Not sure if the rice is made in house, or just Knorr/Lipton dry packed. A lot of slopped on onions and green peppers on everything. My rellenos was pretty good. I'd prefer to go somewhere that has not overly Americanized what already is overly Americanized. I've been going to Pollys since I was 8 yesterday old, I've been a loyal customer and always have positive things to say, but now when I go, I'm disappointed in the amout of salsa they bring, it's barely half a bowl, they never fill it up, then when I ask for more I get the feeling that they get annoyed , then again they only bring a little, why do you ask for more because they barely give you any. I was really disappointed the attitude of the waitress when I asked for more salsa or chips. 3 of my friends don't want to go back because of how we were treated. I use to be a server, so I'm very alert on how a customer should be treated, because the customer is the reason why a place stays open. I don't believe a customer is always right, you just have to kill them with kindness. Your tips rely on how your customer is taken care of. Even though I love Pollys, I'm not gonna go back until they change their customer service. My friends and I love LA Parilla, we are always given enough salsa and get good service , you feel like they want you their. We always tip very well, because our server made us feel appreciated. Sorry, for the negatives, but after being treated the same way the last few times I've been to Pollys, I felt it should be said, so you don't piss them off. After a certain amount of salsa they start charging you for it then only bring you a little bit. I would only eat two regular size bowls, because I poor some on my food, but the bring you a smaller bowl with less in it, so yes people are going to ask for more. I have to disclaimer this by saying that I work at an authentic Mexican restaurant so I have been made accustomed to a certain standard of Mexican food. That said, this place was very disappointing based on all the high praise on here. I went there thinking that, for Gringo Mexican, it would be pretty good. It really was nothing special. The chips seems store-bought, the salsa tastes suspiciously like Pace Picante salsa, and the special taco sauce they gave me was given to me with the phrase, "Now THIS we make ourselves!" suggesting the other salsa isn't made in-house. Also, the 'special taco sauce' tastes like a slightly sweeter version of Taco Bell mild sauce. The tacos themselves aren't bad. It's nothing special but they're good enough. My only complaint is that the cheese on the tacos and the beans was just shredded cheddar. You don't use cheddar on Mexican food. You just don't. The rice was really good. The tomato sauce they were cooked in made them very yummy. I really liked that best of everything on my plate. The prices were very low, which was nice after the quality of the food was so basic. The food is not good. The refried beans look very dark and gritty, and they taste horrible. The Spanish rice also managed to look like red paint was mixed into it. Then there was the cheese in the tacos, which was shredded cheddar and it was clumped and stuck together and also looked very strange. On the plus side our waitress was extremely nice and attentive, and the owner or manager was very pleasant towards my family. read more

We've been eating at Polly's for over 45 years! It's not what most folks think of when they picture typical Mexican food and I think that's what makes it special. The salsa is on fire! (Ask for think or chunky.). The chips are wonderful. The guac is different - much creamier than normal. I always get a guac salad with tomatoes. As to menu items, there's a wide choice - most with lots of sharp cheddar cheese melted or dashed on top. The sauces are very tasty. The service is top notch. Polly's is one of my favorite places to eat in the US! I grew up in Macon and make it a priority to get at least one meal at Polly's every time I visit. Their place is homey and not a lot to look at but the service is friendly and efficient and the food (at least the things I've ordered) is great. My favorite thing about eating there has to be the salsa. I've never had salsa that good anywhere else. If I could get them to send me some in L.A. I'd plunk down the cash right now. read more

A previous reviewer Chelsea W. was being too kind with her 2 star review. I had never tried this place, but I had remembered their t.v. ads and gave them a try this week. The place looks run down and dirty. However the appearance was deceiving for their health score was almost perfect. Upward and on to the review, well I ordered a taco lunch special with rice and beans. Will the chips with the salsa were the usual quality. However the tacos with hamburger with rice and beans were horrific, it tasted burnt and smelled funny. The shells were fresh, but the food was probably right near rotten/spolied. The price was low, but overall not worth it. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Good but not the best mexican restaurant I've been to. Prices are fair but I felt like I was shorted a little from my meal. I didn't get any lettuce, tomato or sour creme with my quesadilla like I have come to expect from other mexican restaurants I've eaten at. I remember I loved this place as a kid! Now not so much. The steak in the house special had a questionable texture. You have cheese options white or yellow. Literally that's what we were asked. The shrimp was the size of a dime. Service was friendly but not exceptional. Gordon Ramsey would have a heyday here. I love mom and pop places but the food should at least be edible. My family and I have been eating at Polly's for as long as I can remember . All the other Mexican restaurants in our town are all the same old generic tasting food , but Polly's is always full of flavor and very fresh. The hot sauce and guacamole are out of this world, and I love that you have several different choices when it comes to cheeses ( cheddar, white American or mixed) my fav is the mixed. I also have to say that the taco sauce they have now is outstanding , I even have a bottle at home because it goes so good on everything! Despite the rundown and overall dirty condition, we have continued to eat here for years. The service and food are typically good. Tonight was the exception. I forgot that it was Cinco de Mayo, and apparently so did the owners - ONE waitress for the entire restaurant. The "hostess" and "cashier" stayed behind the lattice wall most of the time we were there. They certainly seemed capable of helping. It took 4 requests to get more chips and salsa. Once our food arrived, the portions were much smaller than usual. It took over 10 minutes to flag down the cashier to ask about why there was so little guacamole on the chalupa. She then brought out a bowl with 2 tablespoons of guacamole. We have been eating at Polly's at least 3-4 times a month for almost 20 years and have NEVER complained. When we attempted to address the issue of being charged for extra guacamole we were told we had to pay because we received extra when in fact we still had less than normal even with the additional tiny bowl. Hopefully, you'll clean up the restaurant AND the attitudes. read more
