The food was good. I was a bit worried because I did not find any recent reviews and when I visited the restaurant it was an evening and was slow but I gave it a try. The service was quick. I placed a carry out order and received my order within 10 to 15 minutes. The entrée that I ordered is available for lunch and dinner but based upon the menu if you want to order it for dinner, there is a two dollar up charge.. While this place needs updating really bad, the service and food quality are bigger issues. Ordered enchiladas and have to say that I have done a better job making this dish at home with cheap ground beef, tortillas, and some Old El Paso seasoning in a packet. It was bland, tasteless, no spices and not sure if they forgot or are trying to save money but there was not one shred of cheese on the whole dish. I would have been much better off going to Taco Bell. Even the rice was not cooked right, it was crunchy. The wife said the margarita was watered down kool-aid. The service was also well below par. Server never came back to check until we were done with the meal and were no where to be found during it. I asked for an ice tea and never got it. My water glass was empty half way through the meal never to be refilled. When we were done I asked for the check and it never came. We sat for 10 minutes then finally just got up and went to the window to pay where we waited another 10 minutes before someone came and took my money. This was early Saturday afternoon so it's not like they were swamped. In terms of the inside, the whole place needs a full gutted rehab. Looks maybe late 80's? It had an overall dusty vibe to it, not filthy dirty but not clean either, very dusty and dingy. The booths were old and worn, lots of wear. The bar was not being used with large boxes for storage in plain view. The ceiling tiles were filthy and grimy and need at least replacement. So much potential at this location but they need to just tear the whole thing out and start completely over. Change the overall traffic flow to support the local walk in customer who wants a to go order. Spend some money on a qualified chef to revamp the menu and hire some competent wait staff. Of course, they'll never do any of this so I won't be returning anytime soon, if ever. read more

This has been my go to Mexican restaurant for years. They are friendly and accommodating. I have had most of what's offered on the menu and it's all good. My dad was there for his 94th birthday and he wanted butter pecan ice cream. They walked over to Kroger to get him some buttter pecan ice cream. We ordered the vegetable fajitas and a nacho supreme. Flavor of food was good but portions were small. We were there on a Monday at 1:30 and the fajitas were small even for a lunch portion. Price was $10.95. Service was friendly but I think they were short staffed because we had to ask twice for drink refills. Patio was not open. We love eating on the patio but it is on a very busy road so I'm not sure we would have wanted the noise, anyhow. read more

The enchilada sauce was bland and the taco was....a taco. Best part of the meal was the rice and beans. The wait staff might be OK, but the lady I had couldn't understand that I wanted a side of rice, not that I was trying to substitute the rice for beans. We also placed a to-go order for a friend and they charged us a $.50 fee. For what, the to-go box? We could have put it in the box they had already given us for our leftovers. I mean, I sort of understand the fee, but we just came in and ordered two meals, now we're paying more money for another meal and you charge us a fee just to take it out of the restaurant? I have been to this location many times and none were as disappointing as today. I'm not sure if they are short staffed or what, but the customer service is in the pits now. I called in to place my order and was immediately placed on hold. After holding for almost eight minutes, someone picked up the phone and hung up. I immediately called back and asked why did they hang up on me after I had already been waiting for all that time. The guy responded, are you going to place an order? No apology - nothing! That should have been my sign to just order elsewhere, but no. I place my order and I'm told it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. I arrive in 15 minutes and my order is nowhere near ready. I stand and wait for another 10 minutes. When the guy (same one from the phone) brings my order, I say thank you and he just walks off and ignores me. I'm not to be ignored and that's incredibly rude so I repeat myself again and stare directly at him and he mumbles. Needless to say, I open my take out and it's a decent portion of meat but barely any vegetables at all. Not a pleasant experience. read more

It had been years since I had ate here, and thought about how good it was here the last time I had it. Well what I didn't know was, how much the place has gone down-hill. My mother and I had stopped in a little after 7:00pm We tried being mindful that they could have a dinner rush, but when we got in, it wasn't busy at all. We waited 5-10 minutes to get seated. Which is no big deal, that's pretty good timing if they are short staffed. The waiter brought me the wrong drink, and seemed annoyed when I repeated what I had asked for. When we were finally able to get our food order in, my mother had ordered a simple Grilled Salad, which on the menu, doesn't show there being beans or guacamole in it but when she got her food both were in it. I had ordered a combination meal, and on top of my burrito was a red sauce that tasted and looked like pizza sauce. Our waiter was nowhere to be found, so we picked at the food a bit, until we decided we were just going to pay and leave. When we were able to flag our waiter down to get the check, he asked if everything was alright and if we needed carry out plates. We both said that no everything was alright and we didn't want carry out plates. He just shrugged it off and went to grab our check. We paid and left, safe to say we won't be coming back. We've been to El Sombero dozens of times. While I am stunned by some of the truly horrific experiences other Yelpers have had with the staff here, that hasn't been my experience. Last night my wife and I took our son to eat here after trick-or-treating. My wife ordered a combination platter comprised of a burrito, an enchilada, beans and rice. She asked for extra rice instead of beans and they got it right. She forgot, however, to tell the server that she wanted a cheese enchilada instead of beef. Since it was her mistake, she explained the situation to the server and we ordered a cheese enchilada separately. The server offered to remake my wife's food, but my wife pointed out for a second time that it was her own fault and we didn't mind paying extra to fix it. The server, however, insisted on taking back my wife's food and remaking the entire plate. It came back hot and fresh and FAST. We were both impressed. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly and I think she only smiled once, but she was very professional and my wife and I were impressed by how helpful she was with our problem. What's more, she stopped by our table on a regular basis through the evening and we had everything we needed. During our meal, the manager even came out and visited every table, making sure that all the guests were happy. The only reason I am giving this restaurant three stars is because of the food. The service was great, the place was clean and the food was hot, but it was remarkably bland. From the beginning to the end of the meal, there were no distinct flavors that stood out. Even the taste of the guacamole and salsa--which are unique flavors that you'd expect to stand out from the rest of the meal--just blended right in. Except the fried ice cream. That's just incredible. I know we'll be back because my son is addicted to the cheese dip and the food is fast and dirt cheap. You'd probably spend more going through the drive-through at Taco Bell than you will having a meal here, so it doesn't have to be gourmet. read more

Wife and I eat here several times a month. Food us consistent and usually great. Occasionally just good. Servers are attentive, friendly and take good care of us. I live around the corner, so this is my go-to Mexican place. Solid food. The staff may be a bit disinterested, but in my case they've always been competent and fairly prompt, which is all I really ask. The beer selection is good, and prices for larger beers are pretty great. The last few times I've been, I've had Mole dishes, and they were outstanding. They do shrimp well, and get the smokey, hard hitting flavour of good Mole right, which can be tough. Overall? It's a solid Mexican place. The waiters are either indifferent or forget to refill your glass. It's getting chilly out and I had a hankering for Mexican....and El Sombrero is right down the street. I placed my burrito order to go, they told me ten minutes and so my perpetual path towards gluttony began. First of all, they gave me a ginormous bag of chips, and they were still warm! Yay! i love that. So, my burrito was full of yummy meat, covered in queso, and came with a side of rice. Not exactly Mexico City mexican, but tasty nevertheless. The salsa that came with the chips was fresh and had a kick, the pico was chunky...so my only disappointment was the watery guacamole. I would still go back...everything was cheap, fresh and hot, but the guac is a a definite no! read more
