So, Pomeroy quickly became my favorite French restaurant in IL. It's in the heart of downtown Winnetka and very accessible. We started with the baguette & butter. Omg, that butter! Lobster Risotto was the best I've ever had, hands down. My hubby had the Steak à la Bordelaise and it was just perfection. For dessert, we had the Porfiteroles Glacées & Warm Pear Tarte Tatin, out of this world! I'm just so in love with this place. We had a great dining experience & I highly, highly recommend. read more

I have known more than one fellow citizen who, after a recent visit to France, complained about the food, because it was so different from that to which they are accustomed. Would they also find beer in Germany undrinkable? The offerings of boutiques in Italy unwearable? Neither travels any better or worse than French cuisine, yet neither seems to be as curiously familiar yet alien to us Americanos, despite our addiction to things like sliced deep-fried potatoes, or mayonnaise ("Really? You put mayo on your fries? Eeew!"). Julia Child went above and beyond in an attempt to correct this, but I'm sure she would agree that a successful expatriate French restaurant must not only accurately interpret the cuisine but also make you feel like you're actually in France. This for me is what has distinguished the memorable ones in Chicago from the forgettable, most of which, regardless, have largely come and gone. I hope the arrival of two new North Shore eateries--Aboyer and Pomeroy, both in Winnetka--will atone for the early pandemic demise of the intimate, highly promising Chez Benoît, and also augment the various other "comps" along Green Bay Road. Unable to get a table at Aboyer, we booked Pomeroy instead. Its website refers to Pomeroy ("The King's Apple"), as a café, bistro, brasserie AND bar--technically impossible, and a giveaway that the people behind it are not French but Americans who assume their patrons mostly either don't know or don't care. Pomeroy is unmistakably a brasserie--which has nothing to do with brass, but there is plenty of it in this room, studiously yet unpretentiously elegant with a tasteful New Money mix of modern and retro décor, not remarkably large, easy to navigate and good for people-watching. Its location on a relatively quiet side street makes the portico seating across the invitingly French-looking entrance an equally attractive choice. Another authenticator: 1940s Jazz in the air, loud enough if you like it but not too loud if you don't. The beverage menu is balanced and appropriate, the wine selections being the most impressive. Beers and ciders are somewhat less thoughtfully chosen: I suspect even the French don't drink French beer, so placing a Belgian Strong Ale as well as good 'ol Stella Artois amongst a couple of dime-a-dozen Midwestern craft brews is the right call, but favouring domestic ciders over French ones is a serious misstep. I opted instead for an Old Fashioned, one of the featured cocktails, made, according to the menu, with Bonded Bourbon (no brand is specified and my server didn't ask if I had a preference--more missteps) plus a handful of trendy "hand-crafted" sounding ingredients. I was served a watery, disharmonious mess, apparently to remind me that neat whisky is how God takes it. First plates are appealing but hit-or-miss. The Warm Tomato Tarte was, quite simply, spectacular: a gossamer Filo crust topped with tart heirloom tomato slices, citrousy fresh white cheese and minty herbes de provence, a masterpiece of rustic, unfussy Mediterranean bakery. I bounced back and forth between Steak Tartare and Escargots à la Bourguignonne, before finally choosing the snails. Good but not good enough--properly baked and presented, but nowhere nearly as garlicky as I hoped and expected (yes, I know, some people are even more afraid of garlic than they are garlic with snails. Pray for them). I first ordered and was blown away by this classic at the now-defunct Brasserie Jo/Chicago, and have been disappointed by every rendering since. My Trout Almondine, narrowly overcooked but perfectly seasoned was accompanied by the greenest of green beans. The Macaroni And Cheese, like the tarte, is a marvel, reminiscent of my grandmother's. Which is to say, perfect, what Jefferson was aiming for when he served it at the White House. But if my trout narrowly missed the overcooked arrow, the salmon, with cabbage and coriander vinaigrette--took it in the chest: dry, drab and imbalanced rather than enhanced by a bacon lardon. Desserts are classic if unimaginative and, in the case of the Profiteroles, dissatisfying. Filled with (very good) vanilla ice cream instead of custard crème, the pastry itself was under-sweetened to where even a glaze of chocolate ganache failed to redeem it. Service was efficient, attentive and knowledgeable, yet somehow...not very French. In this regard I can't fairly compare Pomeroy to the aforementioned Chez Benoît or Evanston's late, great Bistro Bordeaux and delightfully intimate Crêperie Saint Germain--all French owned--but I do think it somehow both authenticates and enhances the experience. Pomeroy has the potential to become a star destination if, like any new restaurant, it succeeds in eliminating its inconsistencies and shortfalls. read more

Fabulous Patio + Excellent Food + Great Service = Wonderful Brunch We had brunch here for the first time and will be back for dinner soon. We sat in the courtyard/patio which was wonderful as the day was beautiful. We had brunch drinks (mimosas and bloody marys) to start and my husband had chicken liver pate while I opted for a chocolate croissant. We both had quiche for our main courses. An outstanding French brasserie with a menu of classic dishes that are well prepared and nicely served. We sat in the lovely back patio with a blazing fire and heat lamps. Service by Karen was friendly and helpful. We started with French onion soup with savory broth and plentiful onions and delicious cheese and croutons. I then had a duck confit with couscous and my girlfriend had roast chicken with sensational pomme purée. Almost Joel Robuchon quality. Last night's opening of Pomeroy was delightful and just a taste of what's to come. The ambiance is Modern French upscale bistro. Inviting and warm without going overboard. Nice front patio, too, with a nice seating area for al fresco dining. The seafood and other lite bites (smaller versions of items on the regular menu) were tasty. Some of the stars: The shrimp cocktail and the crab legs, the tomato tart and the lamb chops. Drinks--my wife enjoyed the French 75 cocktail (with an infusion of thyme) and I enjoyed the non-alcoholic cucumber ginger limonade. Both winners. We ate there several weeks ago. We were extremely disappointed, but I hesitated to write a negative review. It is literally the first poor review I've written. The food, while well prepared was not memorable. What was memorable was the haughty and arrogant attitude of the server. It was as if we didn't deserve to be there. And we were seated in the poorly lit back room - decorated much like an afterthought. There are many other restaurants in the area that have excellent food, wonderful service, and a charming atmosphere. Consider those instead. read more

We've lived on Spruce for eons so we were excited to have a new walkable restaurant and Pomeroy did not disappoint. My husband and I took my parents to dinner to celebrate and we had a blast. The ambience and staff were very on point. We started with cocktails (the Pure Gold and Old Fashioned) which were fantastic. We then moved on to the fresh baguette while we perused the menu which came out warm and delicious. We ordered the Gnocchi Foie Gras to share which was also amazing. We rounded out our order with some fantastic red wine (Tony was great), the filet, the mussels, steak frites, the roasted chicken and a side of Mac and cheese, haricots verts and asparagus. All of it was great. We wrapped up with a champagne toast, the king's apple and some Armagnac. We can't wait to come back. read more

Great addition to the neighborhood. We sat in the oyster bar in the back and were able to walk in on an otherwise jam packed Saturday night. A cool nook in the back where we were able to chat up with the guy shucking oysters and the bartender. Hosted my wife's birthday party at Pomeroy last week. What a great place! 16 friends joined us in an amazing private room. A shout out to event planner Jackie for helping with all the details and to John for being a great server. Food was amazing--not a surprise given that Pomeroy is the sister restaurant to Wilmette's extremely successful Sophia Steaks--a huge thank you to Glenn Keefer and Bollywood Hospitality for believing in both Wilmette and Winnetka! Glenn had one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Chicago several years back, Keefer's, so when I first heard that Glenn was coming into Wilmette it was such great news for our community. A city style bistro in the burbs! Really enjoyed my birthday dinner here. Started with complimentary bubbly followed by a nice house Rose. The Salad Verte was a sufficient portion for two and very good. The warm Tomato Tarte was wonderful with a lovely flakey crust, also good to split. The Steak à la Bordelaise was succulent, cooked to order, and the smallish fries were perfect. I enjoyed the Risotto Aux Champignons but would have preferred it a bit looser in consistency. Our server was top-notch and we enjoyed the round booth. They are doing something right as it was very crowded at 8PM on a Monday night. All in all, a fine experience. read more

We love this place, but lately not so much---the woman bartending is very nice and will upgrade your pours without telling you. That's ok if I get charged for what she actually poured. However, when her second pour is basically 1 1/2 oz. less, yet she charges you for a double pour---hmmm--that is not cool! We didn't want to cause a scene, but she needs to know that we are on to her scam. We wanted to alert other patrons before we left, but we are hoping that she will knock it off and stop the scam. Fantastic food in a really great ambiance. The french onion soup is one of the best i've had including in France! The steak frites is fantastic. I think this is better than most, if not all of the French restaurants in downtown Chicago. Everyone in the area should go to this place and if you go you should go again. Tonight I went to Pomeroy with my brother and my sis-in-law. We had a choice of 4:40 or 9:30 reservation. When we got there it seemed there was some confusion as to where we should be seated. They sat us toward the front. I wasn't happy with the table but we didn't speak up. We should have . We were greeted by a young man named Donavan who explained our waitress would be with us soon. She came. We asked her if there were any specials. She mentioned a few things that were on the menu. Then she took our drink order. She was friendly enough. She brought our drinks, took our order. Asked if we wanted bread. We said yes. When she threw our bread on the table, my brother asked if we had offended her or just bothering her. We laughed it off. My SIL had the lobster risotto which was very good. I had the filet which was excellent as well. My brother had the trout. He said it was good but wanted some lemon. Our waitress never came back to check on us until she asked if we wanted dessert. This is the third time I was there. The first time was a 40th bday party my son had for his wife. It was very nice. I brought a friend of mine here to celebrate a birthday. At that meal we had excellent service and great food. The service tonight was subpar. Our reservation was for 4:30, it wasn't THAT crowded that she couldn't have checked to make sure we had everything we needed. Doubtful I'll go back. read more

This is my new favorite restaurant. The ambience in their outdoor area with a fireplace, heaters and lights is exquisite. The waiters, bus boys and many blue coated managers see to everything. You are treated as a special guest. The food is remarkable.
