Stopped by Pompeii today for lunch and first let me say the smell hits u on the sidewalk before u step in. Its a cozy old school pizzeria that the Bayonne community knows very well u could tell and i love that! The guys behind the counter are so nice, very pleasant and told me if i had any questions about the menu to let them know. The pizza is thin crust which i love but im sad to say i didnt love it. It lacked taste and was a little dry. I was bummed because i really wanted to like the slices. I had meatball on one of the slices and ididnt look cooked. I am happy that small businesses are still around Bayonne but i just didnt love what i had. Maybe next time i will try a dinner instead. read more

Haven't ordered from here in ages, so I decided to order for dinner. Pizza arrived frozen! Something that hasn't happened in any Bayonne spot. Secondly, it was thin crust, which normally I enjoy, but this was the most underwhelming pizza I think I've ever had! Ordered a pie with sausage, onions, and peppers and one plain pie. The only consistency in each pie was how much they sucked! I've bought frozen pizza from ShopRite that was 100% better! They charge you quite steeply for a paper thin pizza with barely any ingredients at all and to top it off, tastes off! What happened? This was once a great spot! Pompei pizza is a must have if you are visiting or live in Bayonne . When I moved back home I was thrilled to see Pompei still in business . I've been a patron since grammar school and I'm 54 now and that pizza has not changed. The pizza is one of a kind and delicious! The service is amazing very laid back and easy. Everyone is friendly and very nice! You leave with exactly what you wanted GREAT PIZZA! The atmosphere is great you can get a pie and relax or have some slices and head on out . Very happy memories I think of when I go in for my pizza . My daughter loves it as well and she moved to Bayonne when she was 12 and she is 17 now ! After a few years I decided to give Pompei another try and the situation is exactly the same. This place has completely gone to hell. It used to be the best slice in Bayonne, very similar to what you'd get in most NYC pizza places. It has now been reduced to a tasteless, lifeless, mushy piece of nothing. No seasoning, very cheap flavorless ingredients, lame, soggy crust and completely inedible. They should change their name to "USA No1 Pizza Slice and Fried Chicken" or something similar because that is exactly the kind of crap they are now serving. And the place has not been sold or anything like that as it's the same 2 guys in the window for the last 15 years that I have been coming around here. The owner must be a real genius to destroy his own food and drive customers away. read more

Wow, has this place gone down. Pompei used to be one of the better slice places in the neighborhood. You would smell the classic goodness just walking by outside but now they are basically serving a no taste, low-quality generic pie that isn't even baked properly. My co-worker spoke highly of this place after ordering delivery from here. I soon visited expecting a great slice, however, upon ordering two slices for my pregnant wife and I, the guy making the pizzas opened the door to leave the shop, walked back in, touched the pizza in the oven to check its temperature, closed the oven and took out his phone, grabbed his shirt to cover his yawn, then proceeded to open the pepperoni container with his bare hands to make my slice, all without washing his hands or sanitizing. I hate leaving crummy reviews, but I would unfortunately never order from here again. This was our first time and I was excited to try a new place. Delivery took a little over an hour for a pie and two apps. The pie was not good at all (soft, mediocre, bleh) and the apps were forgotten back at the pizzeria. Waited for the driver to go back, get it and deliver it. I assumed they'd give us a fresh order of wings and mozzarella sticks since they would clearly be cold- nope. Instead we received cold, nasty apps (cold wet mozz sticks from sitting in their tin) an hour and a half after our initial order. Really? No call to apologize, no offer to discount, no anything. The driver was very kind and apologized, but honestly, the pizzeria should have done something.... anything. But no. We tossed the apps in the garbage because no one wanted to eat them. I ordered a large pie with sausage and garlic knots. The delivery came sooner than expected. The delivery guy was nice and text me when he arrived . The pizza was delicious it had the perfect balance of sauce and cheese and I liked how the sausage was cut Thin that way you can eat the pizza without the topping to big and the garlic knots were smaller than expected but were good , the sauce that came with it I wish there was more overall a great meal my family enjoyed and we will definitely be ordering again!! read more

As your average guy I have no preference for mom and pop stores vs chain pizza. But This spot has some real Brooklyn style pizza (Maybe even better). For the price and quality, you can't beat it. The pie has all the perfect elements, flavorful crust with enough chew and a bit of sweetness. A sauce that packs a bite and makes sure its highlighted. And the right amount of Mozzarella. Not greasy at all. As for the atmosphere and customer service, really nice people that own the store. From the time you walk in someone is talking to you. It's one big family. A solid 4/5. read more

I used to be able to go here with a dollar and get change back when I bought a slice. Those days are long gone, but the pizza's that good that it doesn't matter. I am 29 years old. When I was 8 years old, I was staying at my aunt's house when I had this pizza at the actual restaurant off of Broadway. I only had it once. I had one slice. 21 years later, I still remember how good it was. It was the best slice of pizza I've ever had in my life. I compare every other piece of pizza I've ever consumed to the single slice of pizza I had at Pompei's that fateful day so many years ago. I'm trying to support this business that I've visited since I was a kid, but you just delivered my pizza an hour before the scheduled time and then never called back to let me know what you would do, other than leave a cold pizza at my doorstep since it was prepaid. When we were kids, we would take our bikes and pedal down Broadway and, if by some miracle had any money, we'd buy a slice at Pompei's. They do not deliver, so eat-in/ take-out are your only options. This was probably why it was such a novelty, because in Bayonne, every other pizza joint delivered. This business had such good walk-up sales due to its central location on Broadway that I guess they never bothered chasing down customers. Recently I went back, and it's the same terrific pizza from twenty-five years ago. Great pizza and friendly counter staff. Average prices. Good for walking in and grabbing a slice or ordering takeout. The pizza is authentic NJ (better than NY) style pizza - thin crust, perfect amount of sauce & cheese, and tossed right at the counter in front of you. Small seating area that can get crowded during peak hours, but its really not that big of a problem. I always order my heart-shaped pizza here on V Day, which they are always happy to make for me! Ive also had their wings, salads, garlic knots, ziti, & chicken parm dishes - all very good and just how it is supposed to be from the good ole Italian pizzeria.
