I am a Midwestern Boy so I have fond memories of swimming in Lake Michigan and going for a great cheeseburger afterwards in the little resort towns of Michigan. This place, while in the Southwest, made me think of those fun memories in the North! Simply put, after swimming for a few hours usually in Deep Eddy Pool (me? Barton Springs), you just want a good cheeseburger cooked well with zesty toppings. This is the place to go! Plus, its got a full tiki bar! After a day at Deep Eddy pool, food was in order. Pool Burger is located near Deep Eddy Pool on Lake Austin Boulevard. It is reminiscent of the type of setup you might see in Hawaii...cool vibes only. The servers are dressed in Hawaiian shirts and surf boards can be seen throughout the venue. There is actually a bus onsite, which apparently where the food is prepared. I ordered a burger and fries (sold separately). The burger was flavorful, with mayo on one side of the bun and mustard on the other. The patty was good, though the bun felt a bit too large. Pool Burger is a laid-back neighborhood spot. The name makes sense, it sits just north of the Deep Eddy parking lot, so you're just as likely to see folks fresh from a swim as you are people out for burgers and tiki drinks. From the signs it looks like you're not supposed to part AT Deep Eddy pool, but street parking is a little tight. You order at the counter, grab your drink there too, and they'll hand you a buzzer for when your food's ready, which you'll pick up behind a retro trailer that doubles as their kitchen. It's casual, it's a little chaotic on weekends, but it's part of the charm. The burgers are excellent and I love their topping selection. I'm a sucker for crinkle-cut fries, and theirs are some of the best around. I swap ketchup for thousand island, but that's just my personal quirk. Drink-wise, anything on the rocks is a solid bet. They are all served with that chewable nugget ice. The only miss for me was the frozen hurricane. Tasted a little too much like pineapple concentrate for my liking. I order without the mayo and mustard. My boyfriend loses his mind for the Blue Hawaiian burger the way Moondoggie would do a rodeo flip for Gidget. Blue Hawaiian comes with Wagyu beef, grilled pineapple, blue cheese, bacon and thousand island dressing. Crinkle cut fries are cooked to a perfect golden brown. Pool chips with guacamole and jalapeño pimento is a great snack or burger side. The tiki bar drinks menu has all the classics, some with a twist, and more. We're travelers and this is our 11th state. I think this is one of the best burgers I've had. We've tried a lot of burgers in our time but to me you can't the fresh taste of these burgers. Me & my daughter had the "Dazed & Confused" burger & asked for a regular burger bun & not the veggie burger bun. The guacamole, bacon and the fresh lettuce & tomato was amazing !! I usually get a 2 patty burgers but I never felt like I needed 2 patties. We also had the Pool Cheeseburger without chopped onions. My son even commented on fresh the lettuce taste. The fries are really good, to us, needs a touch more salt but than we just salt them ourselves. My daughter got extra crunchy, it did taste different. We got some adorable party drinks! I really liked everything about this place. The tropical vintage hipster vibe is perfect for this area of Austin. The bartender with the mustache and the reddish blonde hair was engaging and friendly which is becoming a rarity in Austin. We talked for awhile about New Orleans when I told him I was from there and the frozen Hurricane size was a little small. He let me know there was 4 different rums in the drink and that dynamite comes in small packages. I'm not sure if others got a different drink when saying the hurricane was weak because I felt like it was quite strong but not so strong as to overpower the drink. It was actually perfectly balanced with the sweet, citrusy, tropical flavor of the drink overall. The perfect drink after a 105 degree day at Deep Eddy pool. The fries are hot and had just the right amount of crunch. I was actually talking to the other person with me about how I think the crinkle cut is the perfect way to serve fries. The little ridges give you the chance to enjoy a bit of added crunch and texture while the inside stays nice and delicious. Which those fries were. I'm not sure if it was Parmesan sprinkled on the outside but it definitely hit the spot for me. To me, the double pool burger I had was one of my favorites I've had in Austin. This one and the one at Lebowski's grill are in a tight race for my actual favorite. The brioche bun was fresh and tasty. The veggies were fresh including a just right ripe tomato and crisp lettuce . The cheese was perfectly melty with a smooth gooeyness you get from American cheese and it was delicious. I'm totally understanding of putting cheddar on burgers as American isn't "real" cheese but when I'm having a burger, it just feels right and is more tasty with a good slice of American cheese, IMHO. The patty is smashed and cooked to give a bit of crispy bits/char while maintaining its juiciness. It was not over cooked and was actually served at the perfect temp. It's served half wrapped in a simple yellow wrapper and a pool burger sticker on the outside. I like when burgers are wrapped this way because without worrying about any of it falling out, I can pick it up and... dive in. It's not that strong but fruity and refreshing. My friend had the pinche colada which I personally did not like because it was so smoky with no other flavors really. Food I'd give 3-stars. I had the All American burger with fries which were mediocre, decent but nothing special about it. They had a sticker that said "best buns in town" which is funny because they tasted store bought tbh. But the servers were nice and they used buzzers and the food came out promptly. The service is actually on top of everything, issuing out orders, delivering drinks and make sure the small venue is constantly being cleaned. The food menu of Pool Burger is pretty simple. 1/4 Hamburger or cheeseburger, a Vegan burger, hotdog, fries or salad. You can customize the burger with a large list of toppings, cheeses, or even get it with a lettuce wrap. The large variety of drinks is where Pool Burger menu shines. They offer several different rum, vodka, whiskey, gin cocktails along with beer & wine. You wait in line to place your order, and a bartender will call out your drinks when ready for pickup. Food orders will have a electronic buzzer go off to pick up your meal. Wait times after ordering are just 10-15min. The price for just a 1/4lb burger and fries can easily get over $15.00. It maybe slightly overpriced, but this is central Austin on the lake, so Pool Burger is expected to have higher than average prices. It tastes like a general American style burger. Is that too generic of a description? Well, its still quite accurate. Burger is 1/4lb, cooked medium, American cheese, decent fluffy bun and fresh toppings. You can certainly customize the burger to your liking and they also take online orders. Fries are crinkle cut, proper cooked and have no applied seasoning. Burger patty isnt really seasoned but you can request it cooked to medium rare to well done on how you prefer. The beef patty is good but nothing amazing in flavor. The menu doesn't highlight it but you can customize the burger with whatever toppings you want. Imagine being out on the water for a long summer day and just wanting to sit back with your peers to relax, have a few drinks and maybe get a bite. This is what Pool Burger is designed for. Its charm is the unique building it resides in with the many decades of history attached to it. The drinks are top notch, where the burgers are just good. I participated in a bike race and at a certain point I stopped thinking about the pain in my legs and started thinking about all the things I was going to order at Pool Burger once I was done. As soon as I finished (and picked up my second place award ) I asked my partner to drive us to Pool Burger. I had the salad with the veggie nuggets (extra nuggets), the crinkle-cut fries, and a burger. It was everything I had envisioned during my race. It's nice and lowkey and the pool vibe going on here is up my alley. It also helps that the food is good too. The hippie burger is a fantastic veggie burger! I added fresh jalapeños on mine and it added a great kick. The veggie Patty is fresh and tasty. The fries were crinkle cut and crispy. I wish they had more flavor, but they were still good!
