I have been to many barbecue places up and down the east coast, but this is my favorite by far. The food was on point across the board. I would highly recommend the deep fried ribs and the wings, but if you have room grab the brisket. The worst part you finish your meal and then you see the dessert menu. I had to take cake to go, all of the desserts are from old family recipes and you can tell (I went with the peanut butter cake). Stopped here for dinner while visiting family in NH. WOW. The service was fantastic. Jada was our server and she was so kind and accommodating to our group. The food was amazing as well. We visited on Valentine's Day so not only was the space decorated and the staff dressed up but all of the women in the restaurant were gifted red roses and chocolate covered strawberries -- so classy. What a delightful place! I had their new item on the menu, a slow roasted baked potato with pulled chicken, sauce, cheese and queso. The potato was a gigantic, easily 10 inches long. Probably the best baked potato I've ever had. The hubby had an equally delicious brisket sandwich. The venue is large, spacious, airy, and with different yet connected rooms for a larger party or an intimate dinner. It's located in the center of town, within easy access to the Mount Cardigan hiking crowd, the Academy, and the Hanover/Lebanon/Dartmouth conglomerate. Service was flawless. When my friend suggested BBQ in New Hampshire, I wasn't especially convinced. However, I will say, this place was better than I expected! The space is pretty big and open, so it can accommodate plenty of people. I enjoyed chatting with the staff, especially one individual who brought over a bunch of BBQ sauces for us to try. If you're a party of two, I recommend splitting one of the combos. We got the Three Meat Combo, which was just the right size. The meats were pretty solid, especially slathered in sauce, with the ribs being my favorite. The sides hit the spot, too. Look no further if you're trying to get your meat fix! read more

I believe it opened recently and they have absolutely delivered! The bbq sauce is a sweet sauce but I did request they add some Carolina style sauce as an option. :) I had the pulled pork sandwich and seasoned fried as a side and it was all absolutely delicious. They have a bar and I sampled the Texas Mule which was absolutely delicious but a tad pricey for the size - nothing out of the ordinary price-wise for current days though. It was so good I just wanted a bigger mule! They also have good options on draft, including Guinness with either a 16oz or 20oz sized glasses. I ordered ahead of time to pick up and arrived exactly at the time. First, the prices I was charged were higher than what was on the website. I brought the food home within ten minutes. The food was cold except for the beans. The ribs were so dry - no juices at all. The same for the extremely dry ice cold pulled chicken. The pork bell "burnt" ends were practically raw. And the French fries were cold. Not a meal worth $59 at all. Probably not even worth $29. Save your time and money. read more

I tried a brisket sandwich a few months ago and it was so tiny and very expensive but thought I'd try it again with something other than a sandwich. Had the 3 meat combo with double brisket and the pulled pork. The pulled pork is mediocre but the brisket was not good. It was incredibly dry and not tender. Worst BBQ I've had, sad to say. It was such a dinky portion for how expensive it is ($40 after tax) I could have eaten 2 of these combos. On a positive note the apple baked beans are pretty good. read more

This is our favorite place to eat. We go a couple times a month. Never had a bad meal. Great staff. We have tried everything on the menu and the nacho fries with beef brisket is amazing. Unbelievably good BBQ for small town NH. The brisket falls apart if you look at it too hard. The chicken wings were the 2nd best I've had in my entire life. The sides were fantastic, with many options to pick from. The fries were great, the beans are cooked to perfection. Many excellent sauces to add to the food. So why 4 stars? The meal took AGES to get to us. Service was friendly, but it was at least 40-45+ minutes to get our food. The food is delicious but the drinks..... kind of a miss. They are poorly mixed and way too sweet. The margarita hurt my mouth. And finally, the restaurant looks almost clinical. The lighting is harsh and the place gives off "model home" vibes. Food was very underwhelming. Only good thing I had was the coleslaw. I asked for the 8oz brisket. Our server even double checked with me that I wanted the 8oz instead of the 20 something oz. When they brought my party all our food I had Mac and cheese with brisket. Not what I ordered at all. Then she tells me she thought I order the maple brisket Mac and cheese. Just not correct at all. Especially when I had to tell her twice that I wanted the 8 oz brisket. She then quickly made excuses that her cat got out from her apartment and she was late to work even tho she lives upstairs. No discount or nothing. Then while getting me another drink she didn't even put ice in my lemon drop like the first time and put way to much alcohol in it to "make up for her poor service" if I go back it'll be far far from anytime soon. Just all around a bad experience. For two people my bill was over 80$ the brisket wasn't worth the money and it's a shame because the layout in this place was very nice and good ambiance. I was skeptical about BBQ in a small NH town, this is real slobut my wife andI have become regular customers. Between the two of us we've tried, mand enjoyed everything except the habenero wings, which we haven't tried. All of the meats are slow cooked, very flavorfull and juicy and the wings are large. The maple brisket mac and cheese is incredible, as are the Thai chili wings. I had never been a fan of brisket but I am now, it's juicy and tender. The smoke flavor is not over done, if anything it might be a little mild for some people, but I think it's a good compromise. They also have a full bar. I would give 5 stars, but they have live music that is just too loud for the space. The music has all been very good, but too loud to have a conversation. read more

I didn't want to stop stuffing my face! The brisket was so tasty and paired well with a nice Loaded Baked Potato. After one bite of their cheesy corn... I found my new food addiction. The BBQ sauce is quite unique. Also made me kept dipping away. They must be perfecting sauces there because whatever is on the smash burger was delicious. I had to take home a dessert to try it. A hidden gem in a small town in NH. The barbecue is the best I have found in the area and is worth the drive into the country.

My wife and I stopped in for an early afternoon lunch/dinner meal on a Saturday. She had a half Caesar Salad with brisket on the side along with the small Mac & cheese. I had a half garden salad then a half rack of ribs, fries and the "Hot Texas Style Backed Beans". Everything was excellent, The half portions of salad were generous, the size of most restaurant's large side salads. The brisket was tender and tasty, not dry at all. My rack of ribs was literally "falling off the bones" tender, and the rub they use is awesome. The mac and cheese was sized like most restaurant's entrée portion. The portion of the mac and cheese was very generous and my wife was very impressed. When we arrived at around 1:45 the place was quiet, but over the next 45 minutes the place was hopping, mostly with locals. The staff were hustling to handle the surge, with even kitchen cooks delivering food to tables. Everyone was helping each other. Having owned a restaurant in an earlier life, I can clearly see a quality operation in action. This is really a real gem of an eating establishment!! read more

If you are a lover of chicken wings, The Poor House is a must visit. They definitely have the best in the Upper Valley and in my top 2 ever. Their ribs and pulled pork are so tasty, you won't want sauce and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The only reason I don't give a 5 star is because the place is a little drab. It has little personality. Some BBQ themed wall decor would help a lot. Don't let that discourage you, though. It's neat and clean and everything I've had there has been a hit. read more

Welcome to Canaan! Dined here for the first time last night. Grew up in the Midwest where bar-b-q is king. This was honestly some of the best barbecue I have ever had.
