Was shooting up to the Maine Coast for a lobster dinner and it was lunchtime, so I needed a little something to tide me over. I very rarely see Popeye's in my travels as they tend to be located more in inner-city type areas. I was surprised to find one at a rest area next to coastal Maine. I expected a long line as the other options were Burger King, etc. ... there were about 10 people in line before me and it took 20 - 25 minutes all said and done. This won't be a quick stop ... however, the quality of the food was equal to other Popeye's chicken stores I have been to. Normally the quality goes down in this order: street side restaurants ... rest areas off the highway ... airports. I got my typical meal of 3 chicken tenders, mac and cheese and a biscuit (which I don't usually eat). It was a dollar or two more than a standard restaurant ... which isn't too bad considering that rest area food is normally more expensive. Popeyes is so good that I usually make the mistake of opting for the 5 piece tenders, which is way too much chicken! They give you GIANT tenders at Popeye's. If you haven't had Popeye's, you are missing out! It is like the KFC you remembered if you grew up in the 1980's before they were bought out and now serve absolute garbage food. Fresh-tasting ... moist ... crispy ... and not sitting under a heatlamp makes Popeye's so good. I will admit that the colonel's chicken batter is a bit tastier, but the quality makes the difference. Even the mac and cheese is perfect ... Anthony Bourdain mentioned Popeye's mac and cheese was a guilty pleasure of his. Unlike the soupy, runny mess of KFC. If you are hungry and driving through coastal Maine, it's a great spot for a great chicken meal. It won't be cheap ... and it won't necessarily be fast ... but even at a rest area, Popeye's doesn't disappoint. I do think they should give you more sauces though. The workers here work hard, even if things move slow. read more

If you are leaving the state of Maine and going past the Kennebunk Rest Area, you won't find Popeye's in the southbound side. You need to be northbound in order to indulge the crispy fried chicken giant that Popeye's chicken is. This is a go-to stop when traveling out of state and returning after a long day. Staff is usually friendly, food is served fairly quickly, but some of their sides tend to sit in the warmer for quite sometime, so they don't feel as fresh when you take on. The chicken is still good and as one of the kids put, the biscuits are still feel like a puck and are not as good as KFCs. read more

I will be talking to corporate about this experience. I am absolutely appalled. I stood in line for 20 minutes waiting to place my order, when I was up the man who took my order was very professional and clearly understood my order. When he walked down to tell the cashier what I had ordered everything came crashing down. I was told I cant order a large drink with my meal because it only comes in a medium. I said, "Ok, thats fine. Can I upgrade for an extra charge?" "No. No large, only a medium." I replied "well I want a large drink, can I purchase that on the side?" I was then asked "So you don't want your combo meal anymore?" I replied "Yes, I want my combo meal and a large drink, how can we make this happen?" The cashier then muttered under her breath "These people (customers) need to get their fu#king stories straight." How is this an appropriate way to address customers? I do not find this appropriate at all for customers to not only be disrespected but to also be sworn at. Really!? I wish this is where it stopped but no, the food was cold. The line was really long. Was at the other restaurant too. Did it move fast? Glacial comes to mind. Only one of their screens worked. So what do they have for food? No idea. None. Cooler to the left had 5 items total in it. The area I think that is for sides had some pint containers. What's in them? No idea. Signs are in short supply here. Workers were busy but clearly not set up to be productive. Cashier asks you what you got. How do you not know? I didn't even know they had fries until I paid and could see them. Too late, already passed the person you order with and they didn't mention or ask about anything other than the chicken. Chicken strips were good. But plan half a day here to get through the line and do your research ahead of time of what they have. They don't have chicken sandwiches. That I know. read more

All the rage about the new chicken sandwich got me thinking, I hadn't had Popeyes since I was 13 years old (a long ass time ago), had the day off today and decided to make the 45 minute drive to the nearest one which is on I-95 heading North in Kennebunk Maine. Upon arriving I noticed quite a line, my excitement grew until we got closer to the counter and noticed all the signs stating that the chicken sandwich was not available at this location. What the heck. Decided on the 5 piece spicy tender meal which came with one side and a biscuit, I chose the fries as my side. Portions were huge and I actually scored a 6th tender in my meal, that's where the excitement stopped. The tenders were bland and barely spicy, there was just no flavor at all, it was just crunchy plain chicken, so disappointing, the Cajun fries were just ok, crispy, but nothing to write home about. The biscuit was delicious, had I known, I would've just ordered 4 of those and called it good. Super pricey, (2) 5 piece tender meals and a medium drink for $26, not worth it. All in all, it felt like a wasted trip, I didn't finish my meal, it just wasn't worth it to me. read more

We stopped to get gas & dinner and the line was pretty long. We looked and saw that there was only one lady at the register & getting food together, the was one guy making the chicken, and there was a third person just walking around? We ordered our food and the lady, I believe her name was Dominique, was really helpful and got the order together perfectly. The walking around girl came to the front to help get the now very long line down. The food was pretty good & fresh, a little pricier than other locations because of the convenience of being in a food court. read more

While I'm sure the chain food is good from one location to another, this location does not have the chicken sandwich. We specifically went here for the chicken sandwich. This is my "Gateway into Maine" - not crossing the river, not the outlets in Kittery. My gateway is the point beyond which I expect to be dining on things like lobster and moose... last chance to eat at a Popeye's heading north. It's going to be a little more expensive than usual because it's at an interstate rest area, but if you gotta have your Popeye's...... They appeared to be out of coleslaw this evening, but they had their new green beans in gravy and bacon side. The gravy and bacon were a nice touch flavor-wise, but I'm pretty sure the beans were out of a can. But it's all about the chicken. read more

Love me some Popeyes. Everything is good here, but tonight I had the chicken po' boy sandwich. Chicken was perfectly cooked: tender in the middle with a perfect batter-dipped and bronze-crispy coating. Fresh shredded lettuce, mayo and packet or two of ketchup on a soft hoagie bun cushioned the chicken and made for a great transport vehicle from plate to mouth. Of all the food choices offered at this rest stop, Popeyes is by far the superior choice. One star hit for the wait time. Most 2 and 3 piece meals were ready on the spot. The chicken skin is the crispest I've ever had. The meat is tender and juicy. Fatty and oily deliciousness is in my hand. The grease runs down my paws. The biscuit survives mere moments longer. The moist and buttery morsel is gone. So delicious I burn the sh-t out of the roof of my mouth. That's the price of ordering fried chicken and biscuits for breakfast. I am from FL but live in VT. Everytime we go to the S. Maine coast we drive to this popeyes. We are going to ME again this wkend and plan to go to this restr. again. Its on hwy 95 at a rest area! So weird! my GPS was not taking me to the right place! had us going in circles! but its at the rest area FYI..The Green "rest area ahead" sign has the popeyes icon on it..Anyway..its the only popeyes in Maine. None in Vermont or New Hampshire:( There is one in Albany/Troy, N.Y that we went to once. I dont know why there isnt more POPEYES in ME, N.H and Vt. Stopped by yesterday after work ordered an eight piece mixed spicy. The chicken was so dried out like it had ben under the light all day. 27 dollars and some change for 8 pieces of over cooked chicken i would not of fed to my dogs. I hoping if you go by earlier the food will be fresher and not dried out. The biscuits and one breast was eatable. Worst food I have ever had and they had horrible manners. I order at the first "station" and the guy was said what are you getting so I told him and then the cashier didn't know what she was doing and asked for help like three times and nobody helped her but instead yelled at her. I spent several hours scouring this barren state looking for an Applebee's, but after an exhausting search settled on this Popeye's. I figured, mistakenly, that if I couldn't experience the subtle tastes of Half-Off-Apps, I might as well treat myself to a fine fry-up from the province of Louisiana. The magnitude of my folly, though not readily apparent at that time, would become increasingly transparent in the coming hours. The only reason Popeyes does not get five stars is because it's in a rest area...so no atmosphere to speak of.....,and quite frankly, none expected. Ok then...I have had highly rated fried chicken from non chain places all over the country...from Kansas City, Chicago, LA, Ohio...etc....but I'm sorry...Popeyes spicy chicken reigns supreme. Just delightfully seasoned, wonderful crispy crust...and moist succulent meat...even the breast which tends to be more dry.....not here though. Side dishes are utterly delicious.....best red beans and rice EVER....the standard by which I judge all others.....killer mashed potatoes and gravy....amazing Cajun rice...and even the green beans are yummy. Worth the drive down that turnpike! Plus..at this particular location...staff is lovely and friendly......in my opinion, best of all the fast food chains! read more

My trip to Popeyes this evening was anything but Louisiana fast. I can understand some delays due to a dinner rush but the wait time we endured was insufferable, despite the entertainment of having a man no more then 30 feet away from my daughter and I get arrested while exiting the men's room. When we finally arrived at the front of the ever growing line we were unenthusiastically greeted the woman behind the counter who then informed us there was a wait up to 15 minutes for many of the menu items. Really? We just waited 20 minutes in line just to wait another 15 for my poultry!!? And when we returned to our vehicle we found, to our profound dissatisfaction, that they had left a biscuit out of one of our meals. The entire staff seemed EXTREMELY apathetic and moved as if they were stuck in the thick gravy I was so eager to enjoy. In fact the only reason I gave this establishment two stars instead of just one is the fact that a good old Popeyes dinner will never cease to hit the spot. read more
