All the rage about the new chicken sandwich got me thinking, I hadn't had Popeyes since I was 13 years old (a long ass time ago), had the day off today and decided to make the 45 minute drive to the nearest one which is on I-95 heading North in Kennebunk Maine. Upon arriving I noticed quite a line, my excitement grew until we got closer to the counter and noticed all the signs stating that the chicken sandwich was not available at this location. What the heck. Decided on the 5 piece spicy tender meal which came with one side and a biscuit, I chose the fries as my side. Portions were huge and I actually scored a 6th tender in my meal, that's where the excitement stopped. The tenders were bland and barely spicy, there was just no flavor at all, it was just crunchy plain chicken, so disappointing, the Cajun fries were just ok, crispy, but nothing to write home about. The biscuit was delicious, had I known, I would've just ordered 4 of those and called it good. Super pricey, (2) 5 piece tender meals and a medium drink for $26, not worth it. All in all, it felt like a wasted trip, I didn't finish my meal, it just wasn't worth it to me.

    Fried goodness.

Love me some Popeyes. Everything is good here, but tonight I had the chicken po' boy sandwich. Chicken was perfectly cooked: tender in the middle with a perfect batter-dipped and bronze-crispy coating. Fresh shredded lettuce, mayo and packet or two of ketchup on a soft hoagie bun cushioned the chicken and made for a great transport vehicle from plate to mouth. Of all the food choices offered at this rest stop, Popeyes is by far the superior choice. One star hit for the wait time. Most 2 and 3 piece meals were ready on the spot. My po'boy had to be specially prepared. Worth every bit of that 4 minute wait!

Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits. 1030am. Friday. Breakfast. "One piece each?" I ask. "Ok, one piece each." Order a spicy thigh and it comes with a buttery and fresh biscuit. The chicken skin is the crispest I've ever had. The meat is tender and juicy. Fatty and oily deliciousness is in my hand. The grease runs down my paws. The biscuit survives mere moments longer. The moist and buttery morsel is gone. So delicious I burn the sh-t out of the roof of my mouth. That's the price of ordering fried chicken and biscuits for breakfast. One of the best breakfast decisions I've ever made.

They are always "out of food" at 6:45 pm when I pass through traveling. Apparently it's hard to fry more chicken.

This used to be one of my favorite seafood spots, but apparently it was sold a couple years ago…read more Today is the first time we've gotten the chance to go and it was a disappointing and frustrating experience. I'd been coming here for at least 20 years, and in recent years it had been a favorite spot to eat outside when traveling with my dog. But now, we are not allowed to eat outside with a dog. Instead we had to order to-go and then walk down back to a 'dog area' which is a spot to the left of the building, below the parking area with one picnic table and some chairs in the woods. It was a beautiful sunny day, but we were getting eaten alive by no-seeums, which is not a nice experience when paying $100 for 1 meal with 6 scallops, 4 small pieces of fried fish, fries and slaw, an order of onion rings, a small clam chowder, and 2 beers. And $50 for a small lobster, an ear of corn, and an iced tea. I get that this is a tourist area, but $12 for a beer in a plastic cup and a $7.50 up charge for 6 scallops while being banished to a buggy spot that made eating very uncomfortable is a big no thank you for me. Crossing this place off my list, sadly. The upgrades and changes to this place are not a bonus at all. I'm sad that a place I always felt was friendly and welcoming is now overpriced and we all felt like we were being treated as second class citizens.

I recently had an experience at Federal Jack's worth taking the time to write about. My mom,…read moresister, and I had a recent, much-anticipated Girls' Day, and opted to go to FJ for lunch. I ordered pan-blackened haddock tacos - but asked that instead of them being in tortillas, could the ingredients just be "thrown into a bowl?" I was being high-maintenance right out of the gate. I realized that this was a weird request. I'm not sure what my deal was, I just felt like having things in a bowl that day (insert shrug here). Our server's name was Shane and she was so pleasant and more than happy to put my odd request in (side note, she was phenomenal for our entire visit! Thank you Shane!) The end-result of my bizarre request was the most delicious bowl of yum ever! Truly, if haddock is your thing, give it a try. It looked delicious, it tasted even better; holy moly, the people in the kitchen totally understood the assignment. Shane even said she showed it off to the other people working before bringing it to our table. It really, truly was that good. I'm still dreaming about it. Basically, Federal Jack's has it all: a phenomenal menu, awesome food, wonderful staff, great vibes. It's the kind of place you want to revisit, and wish you lived closer to.

Both were exactly as we had hoped. The free valet parking was also a bonus. Regarding the actual food, for new it was a Greek Salad with grilled chicken and my dinner partner had the lobster roll. The salad was just a salad, the lettuce was not the freshest and the dressing was sparse, but the chicken was well grilled and juicy. My friend said the lobster roll was good as it did not have large chucks of celery, and the flavor of the lobster was good. She said she has had better and she had worse. Again, if though want pubs food with a drink and a great view, this is the spot. If you are seeking a great and flavorful meal, I would look elsewhere.
