I recently traveled to Arizona and went to Popeyes for the first time ever! I was amazed with the quality of the chicken the sandwich was fresh it was crispy and it just tasted great. Living in Hilo on the Big Island I was happy to know that we have a Popeyes and took my family there to experience it for the first time. We love Popeyes and we drive all the way from Hilo to get lunch out at Puna Kai location. First, as we walked in we were greeted by a friendly female worker. She took our order and gave us our cups for our drinks. The drink area was filthy with rubbish and spilled drink spots throughout the counter area. We then headed to our table to sit and wait for our food to be done. As we sat, my husband noticed that the table wasn't cleaned, it was sticky and smelled. The trash bin across from us was full with rubbish coming out of the top and fall over on the inside of the bin to the floor. As employees walked past it and added to it after a break, it still stood full with no urgency to get it cleaned up. Secondly, due to the drink machine not producing ice, we needed to ask the workers behind the counter to fill our cups up with ice to refill our drinks. As 2 young female workers stood talking stories, they did not acknowledge my husband standing there waiting for someone to help him. The same worker who took our order noticed he was standing there and asked if he needed anything. She was very nice and helpful. The only one with customer service unfortunately. Our food was good, we have no complaints for that, but for it to be just me and my husband's order, it did take some time for it to be cooked. I think corporate should review the managers tasking and how important customer service and the company means to them. Are they there just for a paycheck or are they there because they enjoy their job and want to represent the company on their behalf? Seems to me that the management is only there for their paychecks and don't care about appearance, customer service and cleanliness of their facilities. It's too bad that people just don't care anymore and let a good thing go to waste. This will push away business and make the company lose money. No one wants to go to a restaurant that isn't up-kept. That makes customers wonder if they take care of the food in the same manner. Please take time to watch your workers and make the necessary changes. (ok, also went to UPS store) The chicken was great, hot and crispy. The coleslaw sides were really good but maybe they changed recipes? sweeter than expected, not 'tangy', but good. The biscuits were... round. & maybe too chewy to be really done but edible. Luckily for us we had a couple of paper towels in the car because we were not given any napkins. Couldn't wait to eat chicken. Unluckily we were not given any butter for the biscuits and NO utensils, so could not enjoy the coleslaw until we arrived home. We went through the drive thru, they asked us to pull around to an empty parking spot and they would bring the food out 6 minutes later. We agreed, waited 20 and finally went in to check what was going on. They said they hadn't even started our order yet and asked us to wait 5 minutes more. Waited a long time for the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to open in Pahoa HI. Having grown up in New Orleans, Popeye was the place to go to get lunch and Dinner when I did not want to cook. Finally got a chance to get lunch today. Now as a New Orleanian I know how to order what I want. I said, "I would like a two piece white spicy combo with red beans and a Coke. The young lady must have thought I was speaking another language. When I got my order and left, I discovered I had a leg and a thigh that was cocoa colored. I do not eat "legs and thighs. Disappointed! Gave them another chance for dinner. Ordered their 16 Piece Family Meal along with several additional sides. They had gotten me with the leg and thigh earlier, so I asked which chicken parts was going to be in the box. Legs and thighs, was the answer. I asked whether they had any breasts in any of their meals. I was told they only had legs and thighs ready and I would have to wait 15 minutes for breast. I said that would be fine. I had been in line for a hour already. I expected to have freshly fried breast when I got home. Some of the breast must have been fried early in the morning. Popeye has to do better if the want to remain open here in Hawaii. Hawaiians may not be used to what good Popeye chicken should look and taste like, but they will not continue to patronize Popeyes if they do not do better. read more

Having waited approximately 5 years for this Popeyes to open (my partner is Cajun and was excited for this to open as well) and visiting several times since they've opened - I now feel qualified to review. Main take away - we love it - maybe too much - but they are still working out the kinks. We have had long wait times and missing items - but - the food has always been good and worth the wait. Some advice -- 1. Don't use the drive through. We have always gone in and ordered or pre - ordered using the app (more on that below) - we have even used door dash. The food has always been fresh and yummy. I've read reviews both here and elsewhere - and have friends / family who have reported back - it seems like a lot of the bad reviews come from people who have gone through the drive through - which is typically still long. I think that you will get your food faster and it will taste better if you go inside and pick it up - especially if you eat it right away. If you wait a half an hour or more in the drive through and then drive a half an hour home - of course it's not going to be hot and fresh. But even saying that - we have picked it up and gone home - it's still been hot. If it's packed inside - there are nice tables on the Puna Kai quad / lawn where you can take your food too. 2. Use the App! There are deals in the app that they don't tell you about in the store AND the regular prices are less in the app than in the store (for example - we save 3 dollars on the chicken sandwich combo by ordering it in the app). There are deals in the app that the workers can't believe - for example meals to feed 2 for 13 or so dollars. Plus - you earn points by using the app and get free stuff. If you have an issue with an order and you ordered through the app - it's easier to have it corrected or addressed. For example - part of my in app order was not received and so I told the app - the app gave me enough points to get a completely free meal to address this! 3. You can use the app for delivery, for a mobile pre-order, or when ordering in store. We have done each of these. A - delivery - there were issues here because the staff couldn't believe the deal we were getting (I used one of the offers in the app). But - I sent the dasher the full receipt and we eventually got our food. It took a LONG time and we decided that unless we are desperate - it's easier to just go and pick it up. Also - this was the order for which they left something out - 3 chicken strips. As I said before - I told the app and was given enough points for a free meal - so it wasn't so bad. B - mobile order for pick up - we've done this a few times and if they are not busy - it work pretty well. If they are busy - not so much - we still ended up waiting for a long time and then did not receive everything (2 biscuits and a pie) because we added that to the order separate from the mobile order. If you have made a mobile order and there is a line - we were told that you should get someone's attention, with out waiting in line, and tell them that you have a mobile order to pick up - this is because the mobile orders don't print out when they are made. A more efficient system would print them so that they are ready when you get there - but I guess that's one of the kinks they are working out. We ended up waiting for about a half an hour even though we had ordered ahead - because it was both a busy night and we didn't know that we were supposed to tell someone to print the receipt and make the order. And then we left without the added biscuits and pie. It was still worth it though because we saved so much money by using the app in the first place. Take away - if you have made a mobile order - get someone's attention so that they can make it. You can also pick up mobile orders via the drive through but we haven't tried that. C - using the app in store. You can use the offers in the app in store too! You have to click on use in store and the app will give you a code to tell the cashier. We have done this and it works fine. The code is only good for 15 minutes though so wait until you are close if there is a long line. You can also have them scan the QR code in the app so that you can earn points when purchasing in the store. I don't think they honor price differences between the app and store - so if you want the price in the app - then you should pre order. That's it for now. We will def keep going there. I used to eat this on the mainland all the time & finally tried it here. The chicken was so overcooked that the meat was petrified. The biscuits used to be 1 1/2 inches tall, these were like little hard discs. Thin, hard, tasteless. The red beans and rice was good. The coleslaw was totally different, if they changed the recipe everywhere it was a mistake. It was ok, but nothing like what they used to have. The large sides were very small, two servings each.
