This is a wonderful gem in Eugene. We came here for lunch on a Saturday and they had $8 gyros and a beer. We ordered hummus, which was some of the best hummus we have ever had. However, the portion was much smaller than we thought, but still worth the $5. We got the beef/lamb gyros and they were delightful! Full of flavor and lots of veggies! They didn't have hot sauce, which we are used to in other gyro places. But instead the wonderfully nice server brought out some spicy peppers that made this visit even better! Thank you! read more

1. I've had Yelp for 10 years and this is my first review. 2. The food at Poppi's is FANTASTIC and the atmosphere is so homey and warm. We go once a week. 3. The only reason I'm writing this review is because I had the WORST service I've ever had in my entire life tonight. I was once a waitress--I get the challenges of the food industry. That said, tonight I was served by Leslie. Leslie immediately scolded me when my 4-year-old dashed to the bathroom after my husband, "I have hot plates coming." When I looked up in confusion, she made eye contact with me and repeated "I have hot plates coming", referring to my child having moved too swiftly near her (she was not holding anything). Leslie proceeded to make two or three more condescending/overbearing comments; including how my child shouldn't be pouring salt from the condiment container (he put some in his hand) and that he shouldn't touch the cayenne pepper powder (his father is Peruvian -- my kid can handle spice/please don't parent him). We considered leaving due to her service. To top everything off, an older gentleman came into the restaurant after us-- he asked a few questions about the menu. "Sir, I'm confused as to what exactly you want." She was abrasive and condescending -- the gentleman left in dramatic fashion, announcing he would not leave a tip. Leslie quipped "I wouldn't expect you to". Leslie turned to the remaining tables, jovially referencing "that crazy man", taking no responsibility for her atrocious, alienating customer service. even with the limited selection of Mediterranean food in eugene, i can't give poppi's 3 stars. they've been around forever and i think they are riding on their old reputation. the menu is already pretty small without half of it being indian now. and what does come out of the kitchen is mediocre at best. overall, it's rather... meh. read more

Updating my review for Poppi's specifically due to the last couple of visits me and my partner made during lunch hours. Both times the service was quite terrible. We are regulars, and hoped that it was perhaps a fluke ( dinner service has always been lovely), unfortunately that wasn't the case. The server ( same person both times) was apathetic and extremely unfriendly and awkward. Hard not to take that kind of service personal. If this had been my first encounter with Poppi's I would have never returned. Definitely won't be visiting again during lunch hours. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of North America. When this was first suggested to me when I started grad school at UO, I thought "Indian and Greek? What an odd combination". Boy, was my skepticism misplaced. The food here is light yet rich in flavor and aromatic. There are abundant options for vegans and vegetarians except on the Greek Supper Sundays, which would make me personally unable to maintain any dietary restrictions. My parents are the pickiest, most discerning eaters I know (to the point it annoys me). They both grew up in Beirut and so are very familiar with Mediterranean cuisine. This is one of the only restaurants I have taken them to multiple times and they were pleased every time with the food, cleanliness and service. That is almost a miracle. I have tasted just about everything on the regular and Sunday menu; it is all great. To highlight a few favorites: --the mezedakia is a STEAL and a wonderful way to taste a bunch of awesome, light mezze (including vegan); ordered this at least a dozen times over two years, never disappointed --saganaki: quality cheese, they cook this perfectly --kalamarakia: I normally find most calamari gross and greasy but they fry this PERFECTLY, lightly breaded and the seafood is of high quality, not rubbery at all --dinner salad with grilled shrimp: pro tip: if you are on a diet, order this and you will not feel deprived but satiated --daily soup: I love soup when it is rainy and cold, which is most of the time in Eugene; I ate this several dozen times and each time I loved the soup. One day it was an eggplant soup. I normally hate eggplant, but loved the soup regardless when my mom ordered it. --kotta psiti: a greek roasted chicken lunch dish, this is divine comfort food for the mediterranean soul --standard chicken curry: this makes me question if they are lacing the food with drugs? beyond delicious -sag bhaji : if all spinach tasted this good, I'd be shoveling it down like Popeye They sell these greek port wine cookies by the register that are to die for, so exotic and fragrant. The greek rice pudding is lovely as well. The atmosphere is warm, unpretentious and clean. They often play festive greek music that is so cheerful and happy. In short: I can not recommend this restaurant enough! It is easily what I miss most about living in Eugene. read more

Everything I had was excellent! I love Mediterranean food so I tried an appetizer sampler with tatziki, roasted eggplant dip and stuffed grape leaves. Then I got a cup of lemon chicken soup and the Greek salad with a coffee. (Plenty of leftovers!) Highly recommend and I'll definitely be back! read more

Don't go here. I don't know what happened, but it was mostly terrible. The service was okay, as in the waiters were friendly, BUT we were given dirty glasses that had lipgloss marks all over them and I and my daughters actually put our mouths on them before we realized it! Ugh. Gross. Then when I pointed it out they gave us new glasses, but never offered to give us any kind of discount on our food, which I feel was really remiss. Then to add insult to injury, we paid what we felt was about twice as much as what the food was worth. Was the food terrible? No, but it wasn't great either. And they were very small portions. I want to rave about the restaurant, I really do. It's the cutest little place, tucked into the busy Willamette street downtown. Unassuming, bistro type feel. Not the fake, uber hip bistro, but the little side street bistro you find tucked away in big cities. The kind only the locals know about. The menu is a mix of Greek and Indian food. Different. The tastes are fresh and subtle. I'm not a hot curry eater, so I had the chicken korma. My partner ordered a curried potato dish. Being from England, and a frequent visitor to Greece, he said the food was better than he expected to find in the states. My chicken was ok. It was OK. There wasn't much curryness. Not much in the way of coconutiness. And the piece of chicken was full...I mean full of bones. I'm not a big fan of eating something I have to keep pulling bones and gristle out of. On the plus side, the chutnies were excellent. The coffee was great. The Baklava was amazing! I am going to return there to try another dish. I want to adore this place. It's been here years and years and years, so I want to believe they can do better than my boney chicken. Maybe next time I'll have the great experience my partner had. read more

I love Poppi's! The atmosphere is so quaint and cozy inside! This was my boyfriend and I first date spot and now it is our reoccuring date spot! We usually get the Thali Platter and share it! All of the chutneys are delicious! They have daily specials which is nice. Also, try the potato and onion bhajias! Amazing! Poppis has been at their downtown location long enough to be an institution in Eugene. You can't be in the same choice downtown location for over 30 years and not be a decent place to eat. I have been there a few times and have never been disappointed. The curries are nice and spicy and come with little bowls of different chutneys, the dark, rustic bread you get as soon as you sit down is freshly made. I had the shrimp Saganaki when I was there last and it was divine! The shrimps were cooked just so, it is so easy to overcook shrimp, and they don't. The Mango Lassi is refreshing and delicious. The staff are always very friendly, prompt, and total sweethearts. I love the atmosphere and how cozy the restaurant is, it's very warm and pleasant. They also have fantastic tea. The food was an interesting fusion but still felt traditional. It was rather pricey and the portions were not large, especially the accompanying rice. I don't understand the enthusiasm. Yes, it's a cute place, and the service was okay (and having a window seat made for some interesting viewing). But the food--meh at best. We started with the saganaki, which I liked, but my wife thought was a bit drowned in lemon. But since when does saganaki come not flamed table side?! Even the server's "oopa!" was lifeless and forced. For $8 for two pieces of cheese, I expect some showmanship. The son ordered the snapper off the Greek menu, and it was good, if just a bit fishy. The retsina was also tasty--perhaps the most mellow I can recall having. Even those worried about the pine resin flavor of retsina may enjoy Poppi's version. But in the unlikely case I ever went back, I'd avoid the Indian dishes. The wife and I are huge fans of korma, but this was the weirdest version we've encountered. I had the chicken and it arrived as a whole breast, with the sauce on top. Kudos for the generous helping of meat, but the flavor was very bland. Good korma (or curry, etc.) needs to be cooked long enough to have the flavor infused into the meat; that's not going to happen when the sauce is simply poured over a whole breast. It might have helped if the chicken had at least been cooked in a tandoori oven, but I'll bet a stack of naan that it wasn't. But I guess I couldnt make that bet because Poppi's doesn't have naan! Yes, really--how do you claim to be an Indian restaurant without serving naan?! (Another reason I suspect they don't have a Tandoori oven.) BTW, the wife had the prawn korma, and had pretty much the same reaction: very generous portions (10-12), but pretty bland. BTW, the son finished up with baklava. Once again, a generous serving, but nothing to write home about. The wife loves baklava, and said it was OK. Not a traditional style, and mushier than she likes, but not bad. Personally I couldn't get past the weird orange hue (my wife thought it might have been orange honey; personally, it reminded me of a piece of salmon), and didn't try it. My advice is if you go, stick to the Greek. And consider leaving room for a zany dessert at Voodoo donuts, just a block away! read more

This was my first visit to Poppi's Anatolia, and I am very impressed. I ordered bhajias for an appetizer and a curry, which was the featured special. With both items, there is definitely enough left over for lunch tomorrow. Even if the portions fit on a teaspoon, they would have been worth it because the flavors, textures, and serving temperatures were all wonderful. Apart from the food, the kitchen seemed to be operating smoothly, the staff were friendly and not intrusive, and the space was clean and enjoyable. My only very minor (very minor) dislike about the experience was that the interior lighting was very dim. read more

Outstanding food and service. Four people in our group; two ordered from the Greek side of the menu and two ordered from the Indian side. Skipped the appetizers (several looked yummy, such as the Melitzanosalata and Tzatziki). For entrees, our group we went with the Egyptian Moussaka Stew, Yiros Plate, Vindaloo Chicken Curry (spiciest item on the menu), and Korma Prawns. All were delicious! For dessert (the server brought a dessert tray--how could we resist?) we got the Baklava, Karidopitta (walnut cake), and Rizogalo (creamy rice pudding). Reasonable prices (4 @ $80 + tip; two in the group each had a beer). We're definitely planning to return! Make reservations for parties with 5+ people. read more

The bf and I were actually able to get a table here on a Friday night at about 7pm. The food was delicious. Bf had the gyros plate which was huge with thick slices of tasty gyros meat. I had the chicken korma curry which came on the bone but I'm glad it did because cooking on the bone made it fall apart delicious in the yummy curry. It came with a little sampling of 4 different chutneys-all were SO good. We had the saginaki appetizer which is basically fried cheese deliciousness. I guess the only things I didn't really like was that it took forever for someone to come greet us at the table. Of course they were pretty busy. Once someone did come she came more frequently. The other thing is that I wish the fried melted cheese came with something to dip in it since it's basically a dip. Other than that everything was great and we'll definitely be back. read more

Poppi's is such a Eugene institution, and as such it's fine. I've been going for almost 20 years, but rarely find myself excited about the menu or Eagan to share it with visitors. It's adequate, sure. But where it stumbles is being so beholden to tradition. Example: they serve the bread with butter pats. I've asked for a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar instead. After some dithering the server agreed to bring oil, but they didn't have any vinegar which seems crazy in a Mediterranean restaurant. Little details like that would elevate and update the experience. Speaking of updates, the Greek moussaka still uses TVP. Like, no one seriously cooks with tvp anymore, it's such a 80's vegetarian cheat. There's a hundred better ways add texture and protein and substance to a vegetarian dish. It just feels so archaic and like the chef/owner can't be bothered to move on from an original concept. Overall it's good food, good service, and great history. It just seems like the owners could do more than just dial it in with the same old same old decade after decade. read more

Excellent service from the moment we walked in and were offered drinks and warm bread. Great intro into the delicious meal that was to follow. The almost vegan spanakopita served with fresh salad and stewed potatoes were very fresh and delicious. Hubby too loved his choice of kabobs. My glass of house red was yummy with the meal and all was fairly priced. The warm wood interior and tall wall tapestries were like a Swiss ski or fondue lodge- with well balanced feng shui. All was very very clean and tidy. We will seek this place out next time we pass through Eugene. read more

This is cute homey restaurant. I go there for Sundays menus which is Greek food. Tried some of the Greek menu and I loved what I ate so far.

Staff were pleasant and friendly. The beer was also good. Ordered the Korma Chicken Curry, and was not impressed. The chicken was just a bunch of bones and crunch (very little meat), covered up by the curry sauce. The rice and chutney that come with the entrée were good however. read more

First time here, found it on Yelp and I'm glad I did because it's almost invisible from the street. The special tonight was Coconut Chicken Curry. It came served with rice and a selection of the most fabulous chutneys. The curry was perfect. I forgot to take pictures because it smelled so good I started right away. Amazing value, too. I ate dinner here a couple of months ago and meant to write a review sooner but I think it left such a bad taste in my mouth, I am only getting to it now. It didn't help that the whole restaurant was filled with thick smoke from the kitchen for our visit. Because of that, I developed a stomach ache and my lungs were feeling bad before we even got our food. We were really hungry so we put up with it. I had the chicken korma dish. While the sauce was tasty, the dish overall was very plain with just chicken and not a veggie in sight. I would rather order it at an Indian restaurant. The best thing on the table was the fennel (?) bread with butter---locally made and very tasty. Unfortunately, on the drive home I began getting terrible indigestion and heartburn---something I never ever get! It took a couple of days for my system to fully recover....What was in that korma?! I definitely will not be back!
