Anatolia's has been a long-time favorite, but we haven't been here in 2-3 years. We were recently pleasantly surprised that they are just as good as we remembered. We always order either the gyros plate or roasted chicken. This time, we both had the gyros plate and it was scrumcious: moist gyros, delicious pita, and a Greek salad with a lemon dressing to die for. The portions have gotten a little smaller, (they use smaller plates), but the flavor and goodness haven't changed. It's also understandable that the portions have become smaller due to the rising costs of everything. We finished off our meal with a brandy-soaked cake with chocolate. It was a no for our dinner date night. I ordered a lamb kabob plate, the lamb was over cooked and chewy, rice was old and so dry unable to eat. My partner had an eggplant dish that wasn't flavorful. We weren't feelin the love. The restaurant wasn't busy so not sure what happened. Heard from locals this was a great spot to check out. Hope you have a better experience. read more

I always enjoy supporting restaurants that are an "institution"--the family-owned place that makes things according to recipes passed down, that's been around unchanged forever. (That's why New Day is my favorite spot in Eugene, for example.) Poppi's opened before I was born, and the atmosphere is super charming. I also saw a picture on the wall of Poppi herself, who passed away recently; I'm sorry for their loss. This all makes me feel bad saying the truth... but honestly, I was so unimpressed by the quality of the food relative to the price point that I can't imagine returning. First of all, I don't quite understand the Greek-Indian hybrid for a restaurant concept. Greek-Albanian or Greek-Turkish, perhaps. I looked at their website wondering if there's some special story behind it, but found nothing. Can they narrate the history of the restaurant a bit, so we're not so puzzled about the hybrid? Here's what I tried: -Spanakopita plate. The spanakopita needed quite a lot of salt. The filo on the top wasn't crispy, but soggy. Perhaps it needed a thicker layer on top. (Tradewinds spanakopita is much better.) It came with two sides crammed onto a small plate: potatoes in tomato sauce, which tasted like plain boiled potatoes with passata almost directly out of the carton and scarcely cooked, and zucchini and onions with dried herbs, which were adequately salted but quite undercooked and crunchy. Both side dishes reminded me of student co-op style. This should not be a $20 dish. -Sampler of appetizers. Pita was good and they serve a lot of it. The eggplant dip is so aggressively garlicky that it's hard to taste anything else, including the flavor of eggplant. It would have been delicious if that flavor were scaled back; it was very close. Artichoke hearts didn't have much flavor, although they were pleasant to eat; I assume they must make them fresh, but the experience wasn't that different from the kind you can get in a jar, so I didn't quite get it. Could they be grilled or something? Dolmas were decent, a bit understuffed and floppy and mostly flavored with tons of dried mint and no other flavors come through. (I'm picky about dolmas bc it's my absolute favorite food and I make very good ones myself on special occasions.) -My friend got a pork chop, which was served without a sauce on top of plain rice with a salad. I can't review meat dishes since I'm a veg-head, but he was disappointed that the dish just seemed plain, dry, three disconnected elements without much concept of how they interact, and with no sauce for the rice/meat. Service is fast and friendly, and again, I feel bad saying all this but it's ca. $30/person here and I want to be served food that's better than I can make at home. If they're charging upscale, they need to strive to be upscale. This place reminds me of Beppe and Gianni's. It's a Eugene institution, family owned, cute as can be, and it's been around forever so no one wants to criticize it. But being the only Greek place in town doesn't stir up enough competition that they're really attentive to the quality of the food relative to the price. If the price point is lower, my expectations change dramatically. read more

You know how there are restaurants that are local institutions, that everyone raves about, or ones that have accolades and awards, and you go there and it's just kind of...meh? Well, Poppi's is *NOT* that place--it's still great! It's been around since the 80s, and it still has managed to keep up a wonderful, warm, cozy atmosphere, paired with delicious, freshly made Mediterranean and Indian food. I think the menu has plenty of options, and a good selection of beverages. On my last visit, I got a gyro sandwich: the pita was warm and had the right amount of delicious char from the grill. The meat was fresh. The salad on the side was crisp and had a tasty dressing. I paired it with a glass of wine and had a lovely meal. My baklava for dessert was a little dry, but still flaky and delicious. I didn't know Poppi, but I know some of her family, and know people who knew her, and I've heard multiple stories about what a generous and kind local business the restaurant is and has been. (All the staff I met there on my most recent trip seemed friendly and relaxed so I assume it's a decent place to work.) I always get a good meal when I come here, and I love supporting such a great longtime local business. read more

-Cute but entrees were not worth it- The ambiance in this restaurant is excellent. Very nicely decorated and in theme as a Mediterranean restaurant. However, if you do not set a reservation, they will sit you in a small hallway between the restrooms and kitchen which is not as great seating. The service was good and they checked in on us frequently. We ordered Bhajias for an appetizer and that was very good and unique. My partner also got a fruit flavored shot he really liked. We were a bit disappointed by our main entrees though. I ordered the lamb dish which was served as bite sized chunks on a skewer. It was very over cooked and very chewy and there was a small bone in one piece. It also was very plain on its own and I needed to dip it in tzatziki to eat it. The olive in my salad also had a pit in it which I did not expect and almost hurt my tooth. The salad was also very plain in general and I didn't like it, and I normally love salad. The rice it was served in was also plain, which was surprising considering this dish was $23. My partner ordered the chicken and it was cooked good but it was served as a whole quarter of a chunk of chicken on the bones still, which wasn't listed on the menu and he didn't enjoy. He had to spend a while to get all the meat off the bones with just a fork and butter knife. It came with potatoes and broccoli which was cooked and seasoned very well. Overall, I do not recommend the lamb dish at all, but the chicken dish was good if you don't mind deboning your own chicken. Overall, it was our least favorite place we have eaten at in Eugene and we will not be going back. I am giving this 2 stars considering the entrees are over $20 and the lamb dish was really bad. Also, I was disappointed I spent over $20 each entree for dishes I felt like I could make at home. The total for 2 entrees, 1 appetizer, and a shot came to $67. read more

My friend and I were celebrating his birthday in Eugene and really wanted some Greek food, specifically good pita and hummus! We did a yelp search to find this restaurant, one we haven't been to before. We showed up an hour before closing but we're still met with super friendly service. The menu features a mix of Indian and Mediterranean cuisine, with so many vegan options!! I had a hard time choosing, but ended up getting the spilt pea soup and a greek salad, with a side order of pita. I forgot to remove the feta on my salad to make it vegan so I just picked it off. The side order of pita came with this garlicy & delicious dip, and I loved the soup! My friend got an appetizer sampler dish of 3 different dips and pita and olives. Since it was a birthday dinner, the waiter gave us both free shots of this licorice tasting liquor! Overall we both loved our food and the service, and can't wait to be back. read more

I'm giving a 3-Star, because the food was superb. But I probably will not return because of the service. Had a rezzie, was seated promptly and was provided water and a cocktail and ordered our two entrees and a cup of soup. Our server never came back to check on us. We were not given any attention again until 40 minutes later when our entrees arrived (delivered by a different staff member who was very friendly). She did have to move our empty water and cocktail glasses and empty water carafe out of the way that I had placed near the edge of the table to signal more water and/or the offer of another cocktail would be appreciated, since looking around and trying to obtain eye contact was not working. Still no soup (which I had expected much sooner). So she went back and got it and delivered it in under one minute. Since we were still not offered the opportunity to order another cocktail when our server finally did bring us a fresh water carafe after our food arrived (I assumed she was told by the person who delivered our food), dashing too quickly to open the door for requests, I finally was able to flag her down to ask for another cocktail. The food was very good, we tried both a Greek dish and an Indian dish; both were superb. The service from our server was not, we received more attention and friendliness from other staff. We had a lot of food left over and asked our server for a box, she brought one, a very small box...I crammed as much as I could into it, but, at this point, was just too irritated to actually have to ask for a bigger or additional box when she clearly had no interest in truly providing what customers need OR lacked basic awareness skills that servers do well to develop....so, unfortunately, I left some food on the table. read more

The best thing we had was the Hummus w/pita and the Olives. The Calamari was tender but no flavor and kinda oily. The Lamb wasn't tender and not what we remembered the last time we were there. Does this restaurant in an identity crisis? Maybe, but who among us isn't? I went on Thursday evening with two other people, and we had a lovely time! The staff was incredibly helpful and patient (our pronunciations were no good), and the food was delicious and generously portioned. We had the kota psiti (roasted chicken), poppadoms (lentil crisps with spicy pickled onion), and a large platter that had a variety of Indian dishes with chutney and rice. High quality Greek food with a friendly staff who are dedicated to the memory of the restaurant's founder. The Thali Plate that I ordered was s combination of four vegetarian dishes with sauces and chutneys. Lots of wonderful flavors that blend well. It came with rice and pitas so you can sample them in various combinations. The "chai" was just chai tea bags but they provided plenty of good honey and cream so I was able to doctor it into something pretty close to real chai. Will come again. read more

We went here for a late lunch and shared a couple different items. We ended up sitting outside as the inside was hot dark and uncomfortable, outside was perfect. The waitress helped us pick a few items- all i can say is wow!! The dance of flavors that were present-were phenomenal. It was spicy but not just for the sake of heat but rather flavor spice. The chutney medley was a pleasant surprise to calm the spice. I was a bit concerned eating outside, as we have had trouble with being victims of aggressive panhandling at other restaurants in the area, but I was pleased that we had absolutely no trouble and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I seldom pan a restaurant this much but lawd, there's a limit. Dinner here recently and nothing was done well, in spite of nice staff. Their tzatziki must not have been made with Greek yogurt, and it was very bland. They even cut the accompanying carrot sticks too thick, so they weren't nice to eat. Shrimp and lamb overcooked, rice in a small portion and dry. Inept Greek salad with excessively large chunks. Bad retsina. Mediocre dessert. Never again. read more

Yum! So happy to have a good Greek place in town. Haven't tried their Indian food so this review is solely on their Greek. We came here once and loved our food, though I don't remember what we ordered other than this garlic roe spread which was so unique. We vowed to come back for their Sunday Greek specials, so I'm writing this review based on that experience. We tried to get that roe spread again but they had run out of the roe! Instead we got this super garlicky walnut spread which was also great, especially if you love garlic! Whole chunks of garlic in there...so good! My boyfriend got the Psari Marinato (fried snapper) and I got the lamb kebob. We both loved our meals and had leftovers. We also ordered the calamari which was by far the best I've had. Extremely flavorful and crisp on the outside. I already want to come back for more. My boyfriend got something off the dessert menu which the waitress described as having the consistency of the inside of a butterfinger. Very sweet, flaky dry (in a good way) cake-like dessert that melted in your mouth. As far as service goes, the waitress was apologetic about the roe being out and they continuously came out to refill our water. I recommend this place. It's right downtown, too, so you could bring a date and get chocolates from next door or Voodoo donuts for dessert! read more

Writing this after a couple Months- 2 of us ordered a lamb dish and 2 of us ordered chicken. I was so unhappy with my dish I told the waitress that I didn't like it. She didn't care and charged me for the entire dish even though I didn't eat it. The 3 others were disappointed with the dry chicken and lamb but didn't say anything. The service was slow overall, we still suffered through it. Never coming back, because they made us pay for food we didn't really like. read more

It was good but not great. First I should say I grew up in India I know curry. The chicken korma that my wife ordered was bland and mushy, but to their credit the basmati rice was cooked perfectly. It's not that often you get that. Thumbs up. My gyros sandwich was very good but I didn't like the way it was served. The pita bread was cut in half so I couldn't really make a sandwich. The tzatziki and the gyros meat were tops. The veges for the sandwich were great. My wife ordered chai after dinner. A teabag, seriously? And Stash at that??? Twining's is the only brand I know that makes a tea bag acceptable for chai. I thought she would get real brewed chai, but not even close. I made her some real chai when we got home, to make up for it. This place serves an ok dinner but nothing to get excited about or pay much for. There were a lot of people there, even waiting outside to be seated, so It is very popular and most people would probably like it more than we did. read more

The meal is finished but I can still feel all the flavors dancing across my tongue. Seriously, I haven't had a meal this good in a long time. Every single dish had such depth. The saganaki was perfectly tangy. The skordalia was smooth. It had a spice that instead of just heat was garlic! The tzatziki was bright. I cannot express with enough enthusiasm how flavorful everything was. Besides tasting great, the service was friendly and warm. The atmosphere was cheerful. And the prices are very reasonable. Honestly, I'm just so excited by some place that recognizes flavor is more than salt and spiciness is more than just pepper heat. Oh, and try the rice pudding. Bleh! Flavorless, reheated slop. Extremely under seasoned and just bizarre flavors. As inauthentic as it gets. Pappadums with gross salty onions. When we asked for chutney, we got just plain chopped pineapple...and got charged for it. Vegetarian thali tastes like a defrosted Trader Joe's entree. Chicken korma was NOTHING like a korma -- instead it was a beige, under seasoned oatmeal looking thing. They only serve Oregon wines (by the glass), although they try to have cuisine from the oldest wine regions on earth. Makes zero sense. Good service. Food is extremely disappointing. read more

back in the day, Poppi's (the one over near campus on 13th) was THE place to take a date or someone that you wanted to impress (especially if you didn't have a lot of money). The food was amazing. OK, that was years ago, the owner sold up and times change. But but but I really wanted the new Poppi's to be good like the old one was. But it's not, it's OK by Eugene standards (cough) but just OK. The food was OK. The staff seemed like "oh god, another night slaving away in this place." No atmosphere. Sad. I guess if it wasn't called Poppi's I might feel a tad different, but not too much. read more

Update: 2012-12-09: visited 2nd time... and it was very consistent to my previous experience. Dishes were the same great taste. Consistent with previous visit, the salt in my dish was less... no biggie as I added it after the fact. I mentioned that to the waiter who promptly relayed it to the chef and the chef said that they would look into it. We had Chicken Vindaloo... as mentioned in the menu, it was spicy and great taste. Just a note, the amount of rice that the dish came with was less quantity. Ordered to-go for lunch (both Indian items): Potato and Onion Bhajias Traditional Chicken Curry entree Considering that all of the waiters that I noticed were non-Indian, the items were amazing. They were authentic to a large extent. The chutneys (coconut with the bhajias) and peanut-based chutney with the entree were amazing. The only gripe was with the chicken curry, it wasn't as spicy as expected... also it lacked some salt... we added it while eating and it had true Indian taste. Was just disappointment they ran out of my first choice greek items like Kotta Pitta and Kotta Psiti (both are actually under lunch menu). Overall a happy customer. read more

Enjoyable experience here on a recent Friday night! Felt a little like being in NYC. Packed house with great ambience. Waitress was accommodating to my vegan friend and me. She exchanged the butter for olive oil with the bread that came with the meal. We had a couple of appetizers sharing the grape leaves and Greek olives. Both were quite good! Excellent piano playing by Chris who plays here every Friday and be sure to show your gratitude of him making the piano proud by putting some tips in his tip jar. Appreciated the special menu showing what contained dairy, gluten, and nuts. Would be even better to have a menu that shows what is vegan and vegetarian. Would have liked to have Chris the piano player be moved more toward the center of the room as opposed to playing in the back. I think his piano playing would add to the experience and diners would be better able to hear him. Will definitely be back to try some of the entrees and of course to hear Chris play the piano some more. read more
