This is a place that you would most likely drive by and barely even notice it, even though it has some bright colors, but it was the name "Pop's Chicken" that caught my eye (I'm from Kentucky ), so it caught my attention when I noticed it was Mexican food and at that point, I was intrigued and it was dinner time, so I caught some street parking and went inside. The place is actually more spacious than you would suspect from the outside, it's clean and a decent amount of seating and the menu is pretty straightforward, and they even have daily specials, so once you decide what you want step towards the counter with the polite and personable staff and order yourself what will be a very tasty, fresh, and homemade meal. As soon as I walked in I got that family owned restaurant type of vibe. Ordered two 2 piece combos one with rice and beans. White meat for both. Other one with Cole slaw and potato salad. Chicken itself was grilled. Good size pieces. Now as for the sides: the rice was kinda flavorless and beans tasted pretty basic. Didn't enjoy it so I didn't finish it. Kinda wish I got the slaw and potato salad instead! The salsa on the side tasted super sour and not spicy at all idk maybe it was expired or something. Wow, I discovered this place by accident cuz I had the intention of dining in a nearby restaurant but it was closed. Since I was already very hungry, I decided to give this place a try and I was glad I did. Definitely a hole in the wall in this part of NoHo, this place has minimal decorations and a few tables and chairs for dining customers. I ordered three tacos, asada, pollo and pastor. I loved each one of them. Definitely tasted very authentic, I thought for a second I was in Mexico. The best part of this location is the owner's willingness to make sure his grilled chicken was one of the best in the Valley. It was very flavorful 5 star. The srvice was equally as good from the owner. The burrito lacked flavor and was too dry, loaded with rice. The ambiance feels like they are going out of business. I've been spying to this spot via yelp for a month now and today I finally got my lazy butt to drive over here. It was a little odd how the parking lot is way in the back. When you come in it's pretty empty maybe they have more customers later in the evening time. When we came in we wanted the grilled wings we saw in the pictures. 1st things 1st. Pop's chicken is the best chicken in Los Angeles. It might be the best chicken in California. It's not expensive and you probably can't get anything better without making it yourself. If you do, it's probably significantly more expensive than Pop's. I cant stress enough how tastey the food is. Really. Its the best. Now the bad. Pop's is a family establishment, but literally every member of the family speaks very poor English and ordering on the phone is next to impossible. Just go in to order. Never go within an hour of closing. Pop's eats his own chicken for dinner alot of days and he will straight up sell you burnt, inedible trash at the end of the day if you're not careful. You really have to inspect the order before leaving. The order is never consistent. If you order a whole chicken, you get a random assortment of parts, not a whole chicken. He does this for freshness, but its kinda annoying. Sometimes you get 3 drumsticks and one breast, sometimes you get all wings, its all depending on what he has. Again, its all insanely good, but its very inconsistent. Here's the worst, and the straw that broke the camels back, making me give Pop's (which is an amazing place you should patronize) only 4 stars: sometimes he give you your change in coins. Yes. A line of people in front of you paying cash and you might get a handful of coins. I think he does this because he doesn't want to take it to the CoinStar and get 8% taken out? No idea. But it happens and its insanely rude and annoying. I stopped going for 2 years once after he pulled this on me. I tried to tell him to give me cash but he just clammed up. Beware and dont pay cash. Long: I tried to go to Food For Love, which has delicious food, but they were out of food and recommended Pop's, saying it was really great. I turned the corner and saw smoke coming from outside. We are honestly so spoiled to have such amazing chicken places in Los Angeles. I've had chicken all over the world and pops chicken is the place that literally gives me the worst cravings for chicken if I don't eat here in a while. I am such a sucker for good chicken but also their homemade tortillas. I wish they had a spicy salsa but the flavor of the chicken mixed with the tortillas is so good I can look past it. What is also shocking is their ribs which surprised me with how good it was. I will admit the speed at which you get your food needs to pick up because it takes at least 15 mins to get your food even if no one is in the restaurant but hey that's the price to pay for amazing chicken. Speaking of price, prices are very fair so no complaints there. Pops chicken is one of those hole in the wall places that you can just drive by and never know however once you get a taste of Pops you will remember them. I think I actually first had this place because I was driving by and wanted to find the source of the amazing smell of roasted chicken. This is my favorite Mexican chicken spot in the valley. Aye Papi Que Rico is the dominant player in the area, but in my opinion, Pop's is better in every way. Their chicken is juicier and more flavorful, their prices are lower and their service is faster. Despite all of that, it still manages to be less popular. That's probably because it's in a somewhat awkward location on a fairly quiet intersection. It also lacks the giant patio and lively ambiance of the aforementioned competition. But all that means is it's much faster and easier to get that delicious chicken fix. read more
