We came on opening day and the place was packed! We got seated 5 minutes after we arrived and it took about 25 minutes for someone to come take our drink and food order. No worries we could see how packed they were. Then our food arrived another 20 or so minutes later. My mac and cheese had a great flavor but was SO soupy where I realized I actually needed a spoon. It was very cheesy as well which I liked but its soupy consistency made it a mess to eat. I let our server know I was having trouble eating it and so I replaced my dish with the fish and chips. Those were actually great and I left pretty pleased with my meal. My fiance ordered the Pub burger and was a little disappointed at the semi-simple plain looking burger but was very happy after his first bite. Great patty and fresh ingredients. For two meals and two drinks the bill was $91 which we felt was a bit steep but we couldn't deny the food was good. Maybe just not quite worthy of that price. They have a great selection of cocktails that we will be back to try but will probably skip dinner. read more

The only problem I have with Pops Public House is that there is only 1. I recently visited after a hiatus of a few months. To my surprise the spirt of Christmas had visited Pops. From floor to ceiling and wall to wall Christmas ornaments of every kind adorned seeming every square foot of space. It was simply magnificent. There was even a place where Santa could sit in front of a massive Christmas tree and a mailbox to mail letters to him. I was impressed. I was not hungry for anything in particular that night. Good conversations with friends was all the nourishment I needed. But I did order the wings. I cant quite remember the flavor I chose, but I think it called sweet chili, but I could be wrong. But it would be wrong if you'd ordered them. Once again, a simple dish made attentively had all the hallmarks of an executive chef executing their craft. Simply wonderful. I was afforded the opportunity try Pops beef stew. This may not be the name but I am sure it would not be hard to find on the menu. It was had ingredients that you could identify. This is far cry from the fast food restaurants that claim they are serving soup or stew and all you are served in a color coded concoction of a viscos product masquerading as soup. Pops beef stew had large tender chunks of beef, potatoes, carrots, and celery. Food like this reminded me of my child hood in winter time of Texas. It almost seemed that my grandmother was the person who prepared it. The only thing that would have mad it better would have been Pops corn bread. By this time I was stuffed to my gills. Once again, Pops Public House provided a truly unique dinning experience. The festive buzz and being around people you enjoy makes this restaurant feels like family. read more

I'd give 4.5 stars. Half star off because the food runner brought out the wrong order for me (which included ingredients I requested off the order and can't eat). Thankfully I checked before digging in! We stopped on our way through to Monterey for lunch on a Sunday. Just had a short wait before seating. This was our second time at Pop's Public House. Great service and food the first time (bf got the whiskey burger and a beer, I got the fish and chips and a Just Peachy cocktail). I got a cup of the potato soup and nearly fell out of my chair - best I've ever had. Yesterday, I ordered a bowl of the potato soup (didn't realize how big it would be with two bread slices!) and then my bf got the Cal Fusion burger - yes they are huge here! - and I also got the chicken parmesan after a nice discussion with Taylor, our server. EVERYTHING was amazing - even my Flavor Burst drink was to die for. All the servers and staff were great. I think Taylor may be my favorite server of all time - and I'm 51, so that's sayin' sumthin. I would have loved different or wiped down decor items on the wall along the entrance where we sat. It's not bad but could be zhuh'd up. Not even really a critique. When we got there we were told it would be a 20 minute wait. 45 min later I asked about table and they said they don't know how much longer but we could sit at the community table if we wanted to. So we did that. They had a dj whose music was trying to make everyone deaf. It was so loud you literally have to scream to be heard. The waitress was super sweet and she said her ears are ringing because they always have loud dj where you cant hear anything. We were in our way to visit friends and used yelp to find a place to stop. The family chose this one and it was the best choice! The atmosphere was fun, had pool, chess/checkers, and a tabletop shuffle board. My son and I played chess while we waited. Our waitress was attentive and FAST. It was mildly busy and we got our food out fast. The kids corn dog was a good size, and our burgers were amazing! On this sizzling summer day, my cousin and I were craving burgers, fries and a nice cold cocktail. I was blown away by both the food and the service. The CALI burger and the Gilroy garlic burger, was absolutely delicious--cooked to perfection, with juicy, flavorful meat and fresh, high-quality toppings. The bun was perfectly toasted, and everything was assembled beautifully. Sweet potatoes fries and onion rings were the right crispiness and flavorful along with a simple but yummy side salad. Ohhhh and we had a fineeee pineapple Paloma that was tasty!! The service was just as impressive, thank you Caden! From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming and attentive. They made sure we had everything we needed and checked in regularly to ensure we were enjoying our meal. It's rare to find a place where the food and service are both top-notch, but Pops delivers. My boyfriend ordered the whiskey burger with a side of onion rings and I ordered my spicy chicken sandwich with a side of garlic fries. I was also convinced to get the pickle margarita! MY FAVORITE part of the whole experience! Pickle margarita: 10/10!! The margarita was made with whiskey, I was scared it was going to be overwhelming. It wasn't, it was perfect! Loved it! I've been here over fifteen times now and overall it's good. I've noticed over two years there are some of the same people there and new ones I've never seen when I go back. They obviously focus on customer service and take it seriously. Most of the food is good, but I've ordered the same thing a couple times and it varies. I think the cooks have had a turnover too. Overall, the food is good and if something is wrong they'll replace it for you. There's not many "good" restaurants in Gilroy and not enough variety at all. I think Pop's is narrowing down any negative things and continuing to improve. The owners are there a lot to make sure things run smoothly. read more

Excellent service and great menu choices however... Calamari appetizer looked BEAUTIFUL BUT...biting into them was like eating rubber bands! INEDIBLE!! Not only were the pieces too big but you couldn't cut them because all of the breading would crumble right off. I almost choked to death eating one Maybe the restaurant can look into marinades for tenderizing these?? Chicken sandwich was a sad bomb when I discovered that the chicken breast was cut the wrong way. When cutting any piece of meat, cutting it AGAINST the grain makes for a tender bite. Every bite I took was exactly opposite so tough! Also the breast was cut so thin as if they were trying to "save a buck" by cutting the portion. So disappointing!!! A more experienced cook would help solve a lot of these issues PLEASE!! Not sure what happened to this place but when it first opened, everything was spectacular! We initially thought we'd come to the wrong place as the location is in a busy "strip mall", but inside it had all the ambiance we needed. Food was all excellent and we had some of the seasonal specials. But I'd describe the menu as pretty vast. The place was fun, decorated, and friendly. There are a few video games and a pool table at the far end of a very long open bar, but at lunch time the vibe was all very family-friendly. There is outside seating, near the parking, and a very large indoor seating area. The staff is well-organized and we very pleasantly surprised. Thought it was good value for the cost, as well. And we thoroughly enjoyed the music they had playing. Recommend reservations for busy times, but the process was very easy to do so online. read more

We stopped into Pop's yesterday with some friends after a baby shower. I was genuinely excited to check it out since I hadn't been there yet. I'd heard about it through friends, and back when my husband and I lived in Gilroy, it used to be the Claddagh. When I visit town, I like to stop into local spots and catch up with friends, and I thought this would be a great place for that. Unfortunately, it was anything but. As soon as we sat down, my local friends mentioned how much the food quality has gone downhill since it opened, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. I asked our server, Carlos, how the wings were, and he told me they were great. When they arrived, they looked burnt--and sure enough, they tasted burnt. We ate one and left the rest. That was all I ate. Even though one group of friends left, another joined, and we were having fun playing pool. My son was happily playing with other kids, and for a moment, it felt like a good vibe. But then more food came out--and my friends didn't even touch theirs because it was so bad. Service was inattentive at best--we had to keep flagging Carlos down because he was rarely around. When the bill came, it was over $300 for just two adults and a child. I've paid far less at actual fine dining restaurants for better food and service. Yes, we had a few drinks, but the pricing still felt outrageous. One of my friends who had only been there for under an hour had a bill over $100, and another couple who were there before we arrived had a tab over $200. After we paid our bill, we asked for one more round. We waited 30 minutes, then went to the bar to check in. The bartender told us it was almost last call, and when we explained we had ordered another round half an hour ago with our server, she told us that "he thought you'd had enough." I was completely shocked. In my 40 years, I've never been cut off anywhere. None of us were drunk, loud, rude, or out of control in any way. My husband had stopped drinking well before that. We were calm and composed, just trying to enjoy the evening. Needless to say, my friends and I will not be returning to Pop's. Between the burnt and inedible food, overpriced menu, inattentive service, and bizarre treatment from the staff, the whole experience was beyond disappointing. Let's start off with the atmosphere. I love that the TVs aren't blaring, there's no music desperately clamoring to shatter your eardrums, and the general noise level and vibe is great. You can come with your family or other adults and feel right at home. The service is pretty solid. Our server came quickly with waters, was very attentive throughout, and was able to answer questions about the food. I'd almost add another star just for service, but alas it was not to be so. My potato soup arrived promptly, sprinkled with cheese and green onion. The first thing I noticed was how thick the soup was. It was almost the consistency of taping mud. I practically had to force my spoon through it. Not sure if this is the norm or not, but there were massive potato quarters in mine as well. Half a potato was sitting beneath the thick chowder, which made the cup feel like it was light on actual soup. It also desperately needed seasoning. The flavorless mass was stringy with cheese in every spoonful, and needed a healthy dose of tobasco to get down. I was pretty disappointed there. My hopes were high for the whisky BBQ burger, as some of the previous reviews made it look so delicious. The presentation of the burger itself was good. I was a little nervous that I wasn't asked what temperature I wanted on my meat, and was sad to confirm that both patties were a very thorough well done. They were dry and under seasoned. I did enjoy the onion strings and BBQ sauce. I think the burger would do better with a single patty instead of two, but that's going to differ from person to person. The sucker is thick, and definitely takes some work. No complaints here at all with portion sizes. My fries and salad were both very sad. The dressing was decent, but the greens tasted dirty and were a little wilted. The fries were so dark and fried in a way that's hard to describe. They were saved only by the ranch I requested, which was delicious! The final nail was the chicken tacos, which had chicken so dry and bland... I'm afraid it may not have been cooked to order. The slaw was ok, but the chicken was too bad to be saved. We didn't finish a single one. Our experience wasn't terrible, and I really did like the ambiance and service, which is where the three stars come from. As for the food, I will wait a while before giving it a second go. So, I finally got to check out this place last night. It was busy, considering it's a Saturday night, and guess what? They only had ONE server for the whole restaurant! The manager told us he had let everyone go, not expecting it to be so packed. We started off with a Pineapple Paloma and a mule family (whatever that is). We also ordered the artichoke dip, which came out before our drinks. It looked delish, but it was loaded with whole garlic cloves. I'm not complaining because I love garlic, but every bite had a clove in it. I had to fish some out because it was just too much! We also got the Chicken Pesto pasta and the Spicy J burger. The pasta was good,great flavor. The burger, on the other hand, was just okay. It was supposed to have beer-battered jalapenos, but ours didn't have any. We were hungry and decided to come here for two reasons... it was not that far from a Tesla supercharger and the Whisky BBQ burger! Yelping around, we came across Pops and the cover pic got me! That Whisky burger looked amazing! It was just that, absolutely delish! We ordered the Whiskey BBQ burger of course. It came with a balsamic salad and we got the garlic fries all for $25 (extra for garlic fries). Not bad. They brought it out spilt which was nice. No you can't just order a half order like my pics. Hubs had the order half! It looked just like the Yelp picture. No disappointing on getting exactly what it looks like as advertised. So yes it was huge! I couldn't just pick it up and try to get everything in a bite, there was no way. Unfortunately I had to dissect mine and eat it with a fork and knife. It looked horrible, but tasted incredible. That onion bbq bacon on top of the burger put it all together. The salad was nice and light. The garlic fries, perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and completely coated in garlic! Yum!!! I also got a strawberry lemonade, which was very refreshing. They actually muddled the strawberries which was nice. Located in a strip mall. Easy to find. Parking lot was jam packed full. Inside had a cool chill vibe. It was packed, but still had a few tables open. We opted to sit at the bar. Family friendly, but has a full bar with a variety of beers on tap. Has plenty of TVs with different games on. Staff was really nice accommodating different game requests and changing the stations. They also have a pool table. Definitely a good spot if you're in the area! Our party of 5 went on a Tuesday early evening. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. The restaurant was dressed up for Christmas amazingly. Food was great from the hamburgers, salads and sandwiches. Everyone was pleased with their meal. It was a little costly, but spending time with family is worth it. I would definitely go again. Just took my team for a meeting today. There were 7 of us, and I can say every single person gave me a compliment for picking Pop's Public House as we all love the food. We shared some chicken wings and fried pickles. Both of them were delicious and crunchy just how I like it. Some people ordered the spicy chicken sandwich (love it), some others the whiskey bbq burger (including me) & it was wow, full of flavor & perfectly cooked. I got a bite from one of my teammates that ordered the calamari tacos and they were outstanding. Oh and another person ordered the taco salad that it was massive. The drinks were also delicious, I ordered a French 77 and it was perfectly balanced with the sparkling wine and gin. Ambiance was also great, super chill, a lot of area to seat without being overcrowded & every single server was super nice and attentive to detail. Stopped by last Saturday for lunch, and wish we hadn't. Ordered calamari and fish and chips. Maybe the cook wasn't happy to work on a Saturday at noon, but the deep fat fried items were seriously over cooked. I love a golden brown item, but what we got was the color of a cigar. This, of course made the calamari tough. Perhaps the frier oil needed to be changed? The wait for the fish and chips was ridiculously long, and overcooked when it finally arrived. Our server was very aware and full of apologies about this situation. Still. There are many choices for lunch, and we were wishing we had just gone across the street to Togo's. My cousin and I both had burgers. These burgers were so massive I had to use utensils! The flavors were awesome and the fries were just as delicious.
