My daughter and her kids and I went here today for lunch. We eat Mexican a lot and are very critical about restaurants. This place however, took us both by surprise. We loved it! She ordered pollo fundido and I ordered choriqueso flameado. They were amazing! The chorioqueso is made with chihuahua cheese, chorizo and cilantro and topped with jalapeños and served with warm tortillas. The authenticity of the food, the authentic flavors and even the quality of the to go clamshell (it is thicker) was better than any of the typical Mexican places we go. I've lived in states bordering Mexico my entire life. I've only recently moved to the Memphis area. Was seriously missing good, authentic Mexican food. That is, until I ran into this restaurant. This place could totally go toe-to-toe with any authentic, popular taqueria from Texas or California. Their tacos and tortas are terrific. They also make their own salsas, which are unique and mouthwatering. Highly recommend for these two menu items alone, but the rest of the menu looks solid too. The servers are bend-over-backwards-for-you nice. Really, no downside that I can see. They're just starting out, so I hope they get some traffic. I'd like to see them stick around. read more

We love this place. We have been coming since they opened. The staff are engaging and prompt. The food is delicious, and always served hot and fresh. The tamales are amazing, always tender and tasty. I especially love it when we come on tamale making day. We love the soups. I especially like the chicken soup and the charro bean soup. I have not had one thing from the menu that I didn't care for. I have not one time been disappointed in the food or the service. The margaritas are a whole 'nother issue. They rock! The top shelf margarita is my favorite, in the entire city. Mayra and Jose, the owners, have welcomed us like family, and we always look forward to our visits with them, several meals a week. The service here is sub-par. I ordered the nachos supreme, only because the regular nachos didn't come with lettuce and sour cream? My nachos were all soggy because of extreme excess liquid at the bottom of the plate. This liquid had no immediate explanation, possibly the chicken? There was so much I poured it into the large cheese dip bowl and it almost didn't all fit. Needless to say they were pretty gross. My wife loves Mexican food. We have several go to places. But tonight I thought we'd experiment. So I hopped on Yelp. This new place pops up with 5 stars. Off we go. We weren't disappointed. If I could complain about anything, it was rather hot inside. Not sure if that's normal or if the air was down. In any event, we loved the decor. Very colorful and inviting. A nice smattering of patrons who seemed pleased with their choices. We started with the chips and salsa and ordered the white cheese sauce. Yum. I love mixing my salsa with the cheese. My wife ordered the tacos al carbon. I had the steak quesadilla. First thought, the steak was different. Nice chunks that were marinated in a really good sauce. Tasty. We both enjoyed our meals. A rather large group of friends (11) had dinner at Portales last night. The entire experience was less than stellar. My charro bean soup was cold when I received it from the server. Not only was it cold, it was very, very salty. Someone in the kitchen went nuts with the sodium. I ordered a side of pico de gallo to spice up my cold soup and it was soggy. The cilantro and onion should have been crispy. It was sad and inedible. The bottled beer was good. Service left a bit to be desired as the server gave me the impression I was there to make her life easier, not vice versa. There are too many acceptable Mexican restaurants in this area to put up with substandard food and lousy service. Consider me a former customer. read more

Great Mexican Restaurant. We have been several times and each time we have had great service and great tasting food. The Guacamole Mexicano is fantastic. We order it every time. Love it. Big portions and good price. We have ordered the Pollo Adobe- it was awesome and the hamburger was phenomenal. My husband ordered the Burrito Colorado and cleaned his plate. We always finish off with the sopapilla- it is light and delish! My father in law orders the tamales and he always has to order extra, because they are so good and everyone fights for them. This place has a great atmosphere, very authentic. The large cheese dip was huge! The waitress waited a while to get our food order, which was a downfall. I ordered the Pollo Loco and it was good! This breaks my heart. First: The food has always been great. Now - Sun., 10-21, trying to put my youngest on a plane in two hours. Portales closes at 6. Start calling to place a pick up order at 5:10. They never pick up the phone. Drive there at 5:25. There are people n the restaurant eating, but the door is locked. They will not answer the door, and we have to hustle to get to La Hacienda before they close. If you want to close at 5, close at 5, but don't post 6 on you web page and your door, then lock out customers that are knocking at your door. So I'm boycotting one of my favorites. read more

We recently relocated to the area from Atlanta and have been searching for a good Mexican restaurant. Thankfully we've finally found one!! Our server was very attentive, and the food was excellent! Their Guacamole Mexicano is the best that I've had in years - large chunks of fresh avocado, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and just the right amount of heat made this a spectacular appetizer. Server brought a half used bottle of salsa to my table! He also brought cheeses dip that wasn't completely warmed for serving! It was stiff! I requested the server to bring a new bottle and cheese dip 3 times! He never brought the bottle of salsa! Nor the cheese dip! After the cook brought my main order he asked, May I get you anything else, I replied a fresh bottle of salsa! The cook then told me it was made greasy daily, I asked him to look at the bottle and then he realized, that a used bottle was given to me! Chips are thin and crispy, salsa is the right kind of spicey and service is always friendly and efficient. Be sure and get the cheese dip with the chips, too. Portales has been our favorite Mexican restaurant for about the past three years or so, but sadly we won't be returning. The best part of our meal tonight (12/10/19) was the chips and salsa. My margarita was watery and bland, our $7 bowl of cheese dip was watery and tasteless. I had a bowl of tortilla soup, but while it had a lot of chicken, it was completely bland, lacking any flavor. My daughter and husband shared the steak fajitas which were tough and WAY overcooked. Then, as we were finishing our meal, it was the final straw when we noticed a woman using a broom to sweep a rug INTO the kitchen area, while also stirring up a cloud of dust. This is the third time in a row we have been disappointed, so this must now be their new normal so we won't be giving them a chance to disappoint us for a fourth time. read more

Been twice. It's similar to usual Mexican, i.e. TexMex. It is definitely a step up from the standard restaurant. Portions are huge. We were looking to try a new Mexican restaurant. We live in Collierville and have tried all of the "local" places but we haven't found one we love. We received great service from our waiter. The chips were thick and the salsa was spicy so I'd give them 4 stars. My enchiladas verde with chicken were tasty as were my friends chicken fajitas. Our other companion ordered enchiladas with beef and while she was expecting shredded beef she received ground. She said the flavor was good. My only complaint would be that 2 of us received our meal long before our friend....that tends to make things awkward......the dilemma......eat while food is hot and appear rude or wait till theirs comes and then eat yours cold.
