Porterfield has been my go-to tire place for (I just checked) 26 years. I went in last week for help patching or replacing a flat, but I couldn't get anyone to help me or even acknowledge my existence. I ended up standing at the service counter for ten minutes (no other customers were waiting) as one employee talked on the phone and another went in and out. I wasn't mad, but I really wanted to get things started. There is literally another tire place next door, so I left and tried them: they greeted me immediately, got right to work, and sent me on my way. (Also, there was no bad TV blaring as there was in Porterfield/TD, so I could easily work as I waited.) Guess what? I have a new go-to tire place now. read more

I have been a customer of this place for more than 10 yrs. I have purchased two different sets of wheels and more than four complete sets of tires. I have always had great service and after the sale service, that's why I keep coming back...until now. About a year ago, I purchased a set of wheels and tires that totaled around $3400.00. The staff and Troy were very helpful in helping me decide on size of tire and finished look of my truck. I came in recently for the 2nd "free" rotation (one reason why I always buy from them). My appointment was on a Thursday afternoon at 4pm. About a week later while putting "winter air" in my tires, I noticed that each rim, around the lug nuts, was badly scratched.(see pics). I called immediately and spoke to Rick. The next day I stopped by for Rick to take a look. He instantly saw the damage. I explained to him that I understood human error and was a very reasonable person. If it was just one scratch or one wheel I may have just let it go. But this was every wheel at every lug nut. Looked to me like someone was just careless or in a hurry to clock out. I understand how air wrenches work and methods to avoid scratching rims. Rick talked to someone in the back and said that they were going to fix my rims. Nice! Took my truck in yesterday to leave it for repair. Rick tells me that after the repair is done, they will no longer be able to rotate my tires and they would not be giving any warranty for the wheel work. After some negotiation and another trip to the back for Rick, he stated that they would indeed continue to rotate my tires for free (as stated when I bought them) and that they would stand behind the work being done to my wheels. Picking my truck up tomorrow. I'll be adding the results to Round out my review!!! 10-13-2023. I was told initially that I needed to leave my truck for one day to get the wheels repaired. It's been more than 48 hours since I dropped my vehicle off at Porterfield and still haven't been told when I may get it back. Went to pick up my truck this am, Saturday Oct. 14. The wheel repair place only painted the wheels. The deep gouges are still visible and you can tell where it was painted. (See pics) I spoke to Rick again and told him that I was no accepting them as repaired and wanted to speak to someone who could actually make a final decision about how to make my wheels like they were before Tire Discounters/Porterfield messed them up. He was happy to add to my account this info and I should expect a call Monday. It October 26th and I still have no answers. Went to Tire Discounters this am. Still no answers. Coming back tomorrow to hopefully speak to someone that can resolve this issue. read more

Have had tires replaced twice. Excellent service. My tires are usually not in stock (not common tires), and they were able to obtain them the same day and get them on my car. The first time I asked them to replace all 4 tires, and they actually told me that I only needed to replace 2 of them, saving me quite a bit of $. They have seemed quite honest and professional. Would certainly recommend them for tires. read more

Porterfield tires lie and are misleading. They tried to say I needed a new water pump because it was leaking really bad, they said they topped off my coolant... which they did not and that my tires were rotated. I went to another mechanic shop and they said absolutely nothing was wrong with my water pump. There was not any coolant residue anywhere.. also i put a sticker/ marking on 1 of my tires and they did not rotate my tires. I caught them in a huge web of lies. I talked to the head mechanic all he said to do was to come to him next I need service. 1 STAR. read more

One of the worst oil change experiences ever! I made an appointment for 12:00 and made sure to let them know I was leaving town and didn't have a lot of time. My car was finally taken back at 12:40. I watched as the young technician wandered around the service bay with a sucker in his mouth, cutting up with the tech in the next bay, looking at his tools, talking, laughing, and literally doing anything but actually working. At 1:40 my car was still sitting in the bay and I went to the counter to ask what was going on. I was told that I needed 2 new air filters and the tech was waiting to get the approval to do that. I emphatically declined to change 2 air filters on my '22 vehicle with only 15,000 miles! I finally asked for the manager and when he came out he told me the problem was the tech didn't know I had an appointment. First, what should that matter? And second, it had 12:00 appointment written on the ticket. so big manager FAIL! He then said it wasn't like he didn't care, but basically he just didn't care. I've gone to this location for YEARS and the last 2 visits have been terrible. Looking at other reviews it seems to me that men tend to have a much better experience than women! Hmmmmmm...... Follow up to yesterday. I began to smell what I thought was engine exhaust inside my car almost immediately after leaving Porterfield. I was supposed to be leaving town for a vacation, but decided to take it to the local Subaru dealership to check out what Porterfield had done wrong. What they found was an oil cap that wasn't screwed in at all, and because of that, a quart of oil had spewed out all over my engine and inside the hood of my car. (see photos). I obviously had to postpone leaving on vacation, have the Subaru dealership clean up Porterfield's giant mess, and go back to Porterfield to see if they wanted to do anything about it. They paid my bill from the Subaru dealership and gave me a lump sum of $10 for my trouble. The manager said he would "talk" to the technician. If I had gotten on the interstate as I was supposed to, no telling what a different story this would be. Needless to say, I will never give Porterfield any more business, and I don't recommend them to anyone else. read more

I made an appointment to have my oil changed and tires rotated on Friday at nine in the morning they asked was I going to wait or drop my truck off.I live 25 miles away so I was going to wait.I was running early and arrived at eight thirty I sat there until ten thirty and they still had not even taken my truck back. I left.When this business was Porterfield Tire I got exceptional service but they have no regards for there customers now. I was a customer for over 30 years but will have to find someone else to service my vehicle.This is a shame as I bought new tires from them a year ago and spent over 2000 dollars on them. I really don't want to give them 1 star but I can't give negative stars so 1 will have to do. read more

This is what happens when a great hometown business sells out to a franchise. I was (past tense) a customer of Porterfield Tire since 2007. I've been used to walking in, explaining the problem and walking out knowing everything was correct and righteously priced. Since they sold to Tire Discounters, that trust was admittedly shaken but I knew the people behind the counter so "onward and upward" - until September. In September I went to the Watkinsville store. I explained my problem as "I feel as though I'm driving a washing machine." The mechanic who diagnosed the problem said that it was the A/C compressor. In most things I am very proud to be an independent and capable woman, but when it comes to cars, I'm a girl. This sound, made when I accelerate, to be an A/C issue - well, what do I know. The estimate was $800 - $1000. I am only off one day a week and as the mechanic said it would be an all-day job, it was 2 weeks before I was able to take my car in. a different mechanic looked at it, called me and said he not hear anything. He'd have to do his own diagnostic. About 4 hours later, I called him. He hears a "ping" and it's the CV joint. WAIT, the right CV joint was replaced only 16 months ago. My mileage then 68,793; my mileage at this time: 81,151. An average of 772 miles a month. "Oh, it might be just GUNK. I'll clean that off and let you know." I guess GUNK is professional jargon." He never discussed this particular issue again. At this point, it was Friday afternoon and the mechanic still had no absolute answer. I told him to keep the car, drive it home and listen again. It was Saturday around 2:00pm when I called. Now we're back to the A/C compressor and it would be Monday. MONDAY!? I have to have my car for work! We've had the conversation in reference to my work schedule and hours, I have to have my car for work. Someone has to bring me my car." The people who transport back and forth don't work on weekends." I asked to speak to Mike, the manager. He actually drove out in his own vehicle. I waited in the lobby for the mechanics to put my car back together. I was handed 2 estimates, one was $1712.60 and the other: $3815.19! How the hell did we get from $800 - $1000 to $1712.60 - $3815.19??? My son lives out of State his friend is a mechanic. We had a conference call in which his friend had me get in the car and describe what was happening when I did specific things. He said that he had no idea how anyone would assume the issue was the A/C compressor. "It sounds like the CV axel but it was replaced in May of last year?" On Wednesday, my son called Tire Discounters and asked how these estimates were reached. Their reply, "one estimate was work needed immediately and the other was work that needed to be done in the near future." He wanted me to run from Tire Discounters as fast as my feet would go. Even then, I wasn't ready to walk away from people who I trusted 14 years. On Thursday, November 17th, I emailed the Athens store and asked for an appointment to talk to Lee who could explain these estimates. I cannot talk during work hours, so email was my only option. "Chris" called back saying my email had been forwarded to him by Corporate, and as Lee wasn't available, bring the car in and he'll look at it. Understand I had already been without my vehicle for 48 hours. I was not looking for another diagnostic, I was looking to talk to someone I trusted. I wanted an explanation of the 4 pages in my hand. "Christine" who identified as corporate left message for me to call. It was Thursday. I was at work. I cannot talk during work hours. I responded via text, giving her the times, I was available. I haven't heard from anyone since. At this point, all I need from Porterfield/Tire Discounters is the free tire rotation that came with the purchase of my tires. read more

I picked up a nail several weeks ago and developed a slow leak in one of my tires. It was in the side wall so it could not be patched. I babied it along, putting air in it as necessary hoping to get through until tax returns arrived. It was finally time to get new tires so I returned to Porterfield to get them. I'd purchased the ones on the car from them before and had gotten a good price and service. I went into the shop at 12:12 pm. I spoke to the gentleman behind the counter and decided on the correct tires at a reasonable price. I sat down in the waiting area which is quite comfortable and watched a few TV shows that were downloaded on my tablet. I looked at the time it had already been two hours. I looked outside and my car was still where it was originally. I asked how long it was going to be before the tires are replaced. It was explained to me that they were down two people that day and that it would not be much longer. I sat down and continued to wait. Another hour and a half passed and my car had still not moved. At this point I went back to the counter, asked for my keys and left. Had I been told to start with it was going to be a 4 hour wait I would have scheduled another time to have the tires changed. They could have kept a customer with only a few words. My time was not valuable enough to be considered so I went elsewhere and got the same tires at the same price INCLUDING the road hazard warranty. You can't beat Porterfield Tire. I was tempted to leave 4 stars so you wouldn't think this was a fake review, but they deserve 5. I've had multiple services done at the Mitchell Bridge location: new tires, level kit, oil changes, tire rotations. Everyone I've interacted with has been knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Are they busy sometimes? Of course! If you're worried about a long wait, call ahead and they'll work with you on the best time to come by. I don't write yelp reviews often, but seeing the 1 stars pasted on the maps app didn't sit right. Anyway, take the bad reviews with a grain of salt is all I'm sayin'. read more

IF YOU ARE SMART STAY AWAY FROM THIS HORRIBLE PLACE..... I paid to have my tires and alignment change and done. They told me that my tires were too big and this was bad for my transmission and was going to help with my gas millage. Yeah right... my car is burning more gas then ever. Then the alignment was never done the car was going to the right SO MUCH.... That's okay I just paid $900 to these people. I called back and they told me, they had no time to check my car so I took it to the Oconee location. I had to wait 2 hrs. Oh that's not it.... they told me to mail my invoice to the tires company and they were going to send me a check for $90 in the mail.... it was not a check if was a credit card.... The last two times I've taken my car have been horrible , I almost got into a car accident because they didn't tighten the bolts of my rims.. And then last week when I took it for alignment they over charged me and didn't completely fix the problem of the car. read more

My experience was bad. Was driving on my spare truck tire when I went in for service. I had my tire that needed to be replaced in the bed of the truck. Also had four other rims to a vehicle that I was purchasing tires for, in total five tires. These people took the tires off on the side of my truck and scratched it all up. In stead of rolling them off the back of the bed. The original tire that needed to be replaced back on truck, the nut lugs where not the correct ones. I'm so blessed we made it home. The also removed stems that I took in from the other four rims that I purchased tires for. They told me they always change the stems . Lies!!!! They should have gave me the old original ones. They didn't, because the five tires didn't even have caps on the stems they put on. Those stems sell for about 40 dollars each. I went back the next day to talk to them about all the scratches, wrong lugs and stems on truck, These people said they would call me back . It's been two in a half weeks. I called. no returns. I will never go back. I don't recommend . I spent almost $900. Dollars. I just don't want to wast time, and take them to small claims court, but I beg you Please read the reviews. Brought my truck in for a slow leak and tire rotation. It was done 20 minutes after they opened and the cost for the slow leak repair was very reasonable. The tire rotation was free.We have always received exceptional service and value from Porterfield. read more

Terrible at diagnosing car problems. I went to get my car looked at because it overheated once.... they told me that I had a major cylinder gasket leak which they couldn't fix and recommend a place that would do it for $1200+. Went to go get a second opinion on the problem and it was a leaky coolant pipe.... How could you not see that when you diagnosed it? That means they did not to a full pressure test on my car. This is my first & hopefully last negative yelp review but I feel like it needed to be shared. I had a flat 6 months ago and took my car to Porterfield Tire- they said I had to buy a new tire due to where the nail was in the tire (which is fair!). Less than 6 months later the new tire they installed was flat again with no nail seen. I took it back to Porterfield at 3:30 and was told they couldn't take me because they were closing at 4:00 today & didn't have time. So they sent me away- with a flat tire hissing air- that they installed less than 6 months earlier. However their competition next door- University Tires took me in & did a great job. These guys have screwed up my car for the last time. I took it in for wheel bearings, picked it up and three different lights in the dash were on. The mechanic put on my paperwork that it was like that when I brought it in (which was a lie) and pulled it up front like it was finished. When I asked about the lights in the dash, Troy Porterfield also said that it was like that when I brought it in. I had to leave it with them and after a few hours, they called and said it was "fixed". Now the lights are back on and when you press the brake pedal, there's a noise in the stereo speakers. This isn't the first incident I've had at Porterfield tire. A few years back, I took a car in for new tires and they broke the drivers window with the end of an air hose. Instead of telling me, they just vacuumed up all the glass and parked it up front like nothing was wrong. I paid, they gave me my keys and when I tried to roll the window up, there wasn't one. I asked them about the window and they all played stupid. I had to sweat the mechanic into admitting that he broke it. This makes twice in less than five years that I've taken a car to Porterfield Tire for something simple and they broke my car and blamed it on me. Blame it on the customer. Hell with this place. I first have to call out Mike the "manager" for being completely inept at customer service, but fantastic at doing sub par work on vehicles that will cost you more money to take your car to someone else. If you ever even consider taking your car to this establishment you must love throwing away money... you might as well take a few hundred dollars out of your bank account throw it on your front lawn and run it over with the lawnmower. My experience has been totally different from other reviews. Just talk to Troy at the front desk. Great service and good prices. The tires they recommended were a total of over $200 less than a competitor and are excellent-Goodyear Eagle. Very quiet and car handling is improved. My wife and I moved to Watkinsville Ga in 1987. We have been doing business since before they changed names from Athens Bandag to Porterfield tires and we have never had an issue with tire sizes, or mechanical repairs. We have also never experienced any hard sales to do work that wasn't required. I guess that it is possible that mistakes can be made from time to time. But we haven't experienced any from either the Athens or Watkinsville location on any of our vehicles in 30 plus years. This includes our children's vehicles as well. read more

I purchased 4 brand new tires from Porterfield in Athens ga. They took the old ones off and put the new ones on. As I was driving everything seemed fine then about 30 min later my tire pressure showed 0 in one tire and 354 in the other. I called them and the guy told me that my sensors probably went out. I explained that they were working just fine when I brought my car in. His answer well ma'am they sometimes go out we didn't break them. I then talked to the guy at the car dealership where I purchased my car he told me that they had to break them or didn't set them up correctly. Now I am stuck with sensor that are no longer working! Horrible service and didn't even try to rectify what they messed up. I've purchased tires there before with no problems but this time was horrible and if it's doesn't get fixed I will never purchase anything at Porterfield again. read more

My experience with Porterfield Tire was disappointing to say the least. Tires for my car were more expensive here than 2 other competitors in town. One of their associates backed a car he was working on into my parked vehicle, causing damage to the front end. Porterfield Tire has steadfastly refused to pay for the repair of damage they caused. Salesman Troy recommended a tire to put on my truck, had them install them , took them 3 hrs. drove it 30 miles home, made my 50k dollar truck roar and ride like a 2 horse wagon, called them within a few hours asked them about swapping them, told them I would pay what it cost, he acted like I was a dum, said that has never happened to him in 46 years and he didn't know what I could do. The guys who answer the phone are fast talkers. The service is a bit slower, and I had problems. I purchased tires for my minivan, which bumped quite a lot, especially at highway speeds. I had to take it back for a rebalance, and the car still does not drive as well as it did with the tires which my Honda dealer had declared so worn that they were dangerous. While the price may be competitive, the service at Porterfield Tire is less than stellar. Hopefully, there are better choices for purchasing tires in the Athens area. read more

Arrived At 7 For Two Tires. Sat Almost 4 Hours Before My Car Got Pulled In. Didn't Find Out Until Then The Cars That Are Dropped Off Get 1st Services. When The Car Was Done, I Left. Only Making It To The Light At Publix When I Noticed My Car Was Shaking Like A Stripper. Went Back Was Told That I Had To Wait Until Monday To Get It Looked At Again. Mind You It's Saturday and I Have An Out Of Town Trip. They REFUSED To COMPLETE The Work Bc He Says His Men Leave PROMPTLY At 12, Regardless Of What Work Needs Yo Be Done. He Did Not Offer A Discount or 10% Off Next Time. This Is Unprofessional To Take A Customers Money and Not Make Sure Everything Is Right. This is a typical dishonest tire store. I went in for the replacement of 2 tires because I was going on a trip. I left the car and received a phone call that all of my tires were bad. I reluctantly gave permission to install all 4 tires. When I went back to pick up my tires I was told they couldn't find the old tires for my inspection. This was an hour after the phone call. You should always be able to inspect the old parts. I left feeling ripped off and the salesman couldn't have care less. To add insult to injury I returned a couple of days later to get the front tires rebalanced because they had no been properly been balanced the first time. The same older male salesman was rude and couldn't be bothered to help me. I had to wait an hour to get my $600 dollar tires rebalanced. On the whole they are dishonest and rude and not worthy of your business. There are plenty of honest tire stores in Athens. DO NOT BUY TIRES FROM THIS COMPANY!!! read more

Should be a ZERO rating! Delivered my car at 7:30 said it would be the afternoon when I picked it up. The car was not even moved. All they had to to was line the front end up and put ONE new tire on. Took 5 minutes to find my keys and not even an apology for their screw up. I will no longer deal with these clowns, there are other shops in town that perhaps care about their customers. So caution to the consumers, unless you want poor service and uncaring attitude don't go there. read more

I would absolutely never recommend this place to anyone. I dropped of a F-350 for 6 brand new tires and an alignment. 5 hours later they still aren't finished. That is ridiculous in my book. I called head to make sure they would be able to take care of the truck two days prior. I left without an alignment and will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

This review is for the Oconee County store. It took 8 hours to have 4 tires installed. One of the tires was defective. The store wanted me to wait to have it replaced and have to drive around with a unsafe vehicle. I believe if the store makes your vehicle unsafe you should be priority. No waiting! The only bright stop was the young lady who helped me get my tire fixed faster. I won't get into the long waiting times I heard other people complaining about. read more

It's been a long time since I've experienced such poor customer service. I requested a quote from the Watkinsville location, yet somehow Troy at the Athens location contacted me via email. When I spoke with him on the phone, he was quite rude, but the price was good so I listened. He told me to get there within the next 30 minutes to get the deal he was offering. So in a mad rush, I cancel my plans for the morning and get my fiance to cancel her plans to meet me at the location so I can drop of my truck. When I get there, the place is a zoo. There's nowhere to park, and the line at the desk is 4 deep. I overheard the salesman at the desk telling the couple he was speaking to that there was no way he could service their vehicle today, that he currently had 29 vehicles waiting and they closed in 2 hours. Good prices are nice, but there is something to be said for honesty and being respectful of your customers' time. There's no way 29 cars got there in the 15 minutes from when I ended my conversation with Troy until I got there. If you are slammed, tell me your slammed and I'll make an appointment. I'm sure this was a tactic to get me to come in today to "get the deal" and make an appointment later. Why not just tell me that over the phone? I would have gladly paid by credit card over the phone and made an appointment. But don't waste my time by lying to me about being able to get my truck taken care of in 2 hours when there are nearly 30 vehicles in queue. I'll give the Watkinsville location another call Monday, because I've heard great things about their customer service. But I will NEVER consider going back to the Athens location. A few years ago I went to them for the cheap tires, but a friend had warned me that he thought they had damaged his rims, so I took a few pictures of mine before I went. Sure enough there were deep scratches around at least one of them when they brought it back out. Armed with my pictures I went back inside to see what they would do to make it right (a discount? an apology at least?), but they asked me to wait and they would talk to me when they got a chance. I was annoyed but sat in their waiting area for quite a while, and when no one came to talk with me I went to the counter to ask again and was brushed off again. Luckily I had nothing else to do that day, because this went on until they closed. I refused to leave until I talked to the owner, and when I finally did and started to show him the pictures, he said something abrupt like 'I don't want to see those pictures' and never would admit that they had done anything wrong. I was furious. He finally gave me a refund, but it was clear to me that this was only because I wouldn't leave otherwise. He and his staff were rude and incompetent.
