I feel like American Char should be a new Anthem by Michigan rocker Kid Rock but this house serves up the best BBQ in Michigan! When you pull up, you see the wood and smoker's in the back. There is a porch with tables as well. I love it when a BBQ joint has a sampler and I get to try everything. It comes with ribs, pulled pork, wings, brisket, pulled chicken, and slaw. I added mac and cheese, beans, and cornbread. If I had to pick only one meat that I would have to eat again from American Char, hands down it was the pulled pork. This pork was perfection and some of the best pulled pork I've ever had. It was tender, juicy, and seasoned extremely well. My next choice would be the ribs as they had an excellent rub and they were meaty. I believe the brisket would have been better but they gave me the end of it with too much bark. The wings and chicken were good too but not as good as the aforementioned meats. The sides were elite as well. The slaw was diced fine and was creamy and sweet. The cornbread was moist. The mac and cheese was solid. The cashier recommended the beans to me as they were thick and tomatoey. I'm a sauce-aholic. There are 8 different sauces and I couldn't get enough of all of them. There is a photo I posted with a description of them so I won't go into detail about them. The one thing I believe American Char and most of the Midwest can improve on is their sweet tea. They got the most important part right and that was brewing the tea in-house. But look I'm from Alabama and I can't understand for the life of me how most of the Midwest gets away with calling unsweet tea "sweet tea." I did compare the sweet and unsweet. There was a sliver of difference, but if I was anywhere in the South, the sweet tea would be unsweet tea. If you are going to make sweet tea, make sweet tea - don't just sweeten a gallon of unsweet tea with anything less than a cup and a half of sugar. And don't tell me to add a sugar packet to it...you have to add sugar in the brewing process. Sorry...rant over! I will be making another trip to American Char in the future. This is the best BBQ I've had in Michigan and among the best in the Midwest.

Unfortunately, the service did not live up to the hype. I paid for smoking, flavoring, and individual vacuum sealing in small packages. What I received was a disorganized mess. None of the packages were labeled, and everything was tossed into a box with two loose labels floating around--we had no idea which flavor was which. Several packages were leaking, and many were poorly sealed with air inside. That completely defeats the purpose of vacuum sealing, which is meant to preserve the fish. Before writing this review, I contacted the business. I was told to "just eat the poorly sealed ones first." Really? We paid extra for vacuum sealing to avoid having to rush through the fish. I was also reminded that the seals aren't guaranteed, which I understand--but they should at least be sealed properly when I pick them up. They sell meat in their store, and I guarantee they wouldn't sell anything in the condition they gave me. I love supporting local businesses, but as customers, we also have to be mindful of where we spend our money. This wasn't a cheap service, and the lack of care and follow-through and customer service was incredibly disappointing.

The menu was straight forward and had a variety of meats and sides available as well as some nacho type options. I ordered a 2 meat platter -- I chose pulled pork & a quarter chicken along with cornbread and potato salad for my sides. My husband got ribs (x2) and a quarter chicken for his 3 meat combo along with potato salad and Mac n cheese. The price felt a little high but not when we saw the portions - the sides were huge and we could barely finish our plates. Here's the thing... we are picky about our bbq. We have a smoker at home so expectations are high. The flavor of both my chicken and pulled pork were what I'd consider a "soft smoke" that you'd find on a buffet line or in a catering dish. Everything came out right away so it was probably stored that way after prepared. I prefer a "hard smoke" where the skin has a nice bark like consistency and the pulled pork was almost soupy - I hate to compare but my go to will still be Two Scotts. If you like a more basic bbq this may be your place. The potato salad was good, unique sauce and something different than your usual mustard and egg potato salad. The cornbread was good too - just wish it was a little bigger. Will I be back? Not sure. I've had their food truck and I think when you're at an outside event it can curb your hunger but for an in person experience, I think my bar may have been set too high. Customer service and people were great - keep improving the food and I'm sure I'd give it another go.

Their 2 meat platter was reasonably priced for BBQ and the portions were good! The meat was solid, but in particular the coleslaw and mashed potatoe sides had a good amount of flavor. The potatoes were very peppery, which I thought was an unusual but tasty choice. I was there at 5 on a Thursday and they still had most of their meat available. Another common problem for BBQ. The only knock food-wise is that for my preference I would have liked a hotter bbq sauce option to go with the standard. But the standard was still good. The staff was very friendly so this is a very solid choice. I'll be back.
