So disappointed in this location. We have been going to Portillo's for years. Since Dick Portillo 'sold' the company, the quality of service is definitely lower...at THIS location. I have had numerous orders done incorrectly. They do offer to replace it right away, but that means I have to get back in the car. They have also offered 'gift cards' and take our address, but then never send them. Believe it or not, I never complain about these meniscal types of things, but it has happened WAY too many times. Just today, I ordered a chopped salad minus cheese and tomatoes and then asked thst the tomatoes be put on the side. When I got home, I found they did give me the tomatoes, but round ones that go on burgers and not the chopped ones that go on a chopped salad. Unbelievable. The combo was improperly cook, fries were old, and shake was watery by the time I got home in a 10 min drive. Good food but don't expect them to accommodate you if you have allergies. If you specifically ask them to omit an item from your food to prevent your sensitivity be it cheese, bread, or sauces then prepare to still have that item still in your food. Otherwise if I didn't have an allergy it would be a great place to eat; however, for many it is a struggle to ever eat out due to the inconsideration from employees. For us we can't eat the food once we go home due to the contamination depending on the severity. I know many people suffer from dairy products as well as bread (gluten) and even the slightest bit will give them severe symptoms. So, when this happens people like myself are out of time, gas, and money spent on the food. Highly, Highly, Highly do not recommend. (if you have allergies) I rate them low mostly for their service and inability to cater to those who have allergies. Is it their duty to provide menu items for people with allergies? No, but if a customer requests something without cheese, buns or even a certain sauce they better get it their way. I mean if you want them to continue coming back! Would I still go back despite my review? Yes! As previously mentioned their food is great. Service like most places unfortunately is garbage. My personal experience: Lady was rude when I ordered my food and that's a big deal for me. I asked for my burger today to be lettuce wrapped (instead of having buns) but the lady would not do that although I have had it done many times there. She refused to allow me to order it that way, so I said okay well at the very least give me the burger without buns. When I got home boom buns, the cheese which had then became stuck to the bun like glue and of course upon taking the bun away from the cheese you get bun particles all throughout the cheese and burger. Mistakes happen I get it but it was not a busy hour it was a very lax time. She never conveyed to whoever prepared the burger that I did not want the buns. I believe this was intentional even though I was nothing but nice to this lady. I still recommend people go here although I would warn you that some of the employees are very rude. I will also recognize there are really respectful and nice employees there too. I'd be more sympathetic had it been a busy lunch hour or rush hour etc. Also if I was not given attitude by this person. It's a shame this employee has changed my perspective on the business entirely. I LOVE Portillos but this particular location gets my order wrong EVERYTIME! Even though they repeat it so many times. We always have a small and easy order nothing special but still seem to get it wrong. The food is good but it is not worth having to wait forever for them to correct the order. The past three visits we have had to wait an extended amount of time for our order then have to wait even longer for them to fix it. All three time they were not very busy. NOT happy. went to portillos to buy a chocolate cake for my birthday. my mom drove so i ran in the restaraunt by myself to pick up the cake because my mom has pneumonia and gets winded too easily walking. my mom gave me her credit card so i could buy the birthday cake for myself. the employees WOULDNT LET ME BUY THE CAKE because i didnt have an ID to match the credit card! i explained that my mom is too sick to walk into the reataraunt and also told them it was my birthday. they said "sorry" i was SO upset and let down. read more

Drive through service is very poor. Often forgets straws with the drinks, and often forgets cheese sauce. I always order the Italian beef and make sure there are no peppers only to then find there are peppers on it. I live about 30 minutes away. Drove all the way home to find out they totally mixed up my medium sized order. Had to drive all the way back as the food was for my family. Drive through manager was very unapologetic and only said "yep. The order was very similar" and just gave us new food without apologizing. Portillos as a franchise is amazing but Elgin location is just lacking in everything that the other portillos had. My wife and I love portillos and decided what the hell stop and eat. It was 7:41 when we ordered our food and that took 22 mins for a cheesy beef and order half slab of ribs with fries, the lady taking our order was a angel but towards the pick up area it was a mad house! There were only 4 cars in the drive thru and maybe only 5 tables taken on the inside and with 11 persons behind the glass making food I kinda was hoping for fast service. The cheesy beef was o.k and ribs have been better at other locations. Onion rings were HORRIBLE just fried batter with a hint of onion. Fries well you cant mess up fries. It's portllio's so it's very average. Have stopped going to them because the prices are so out of line for what you get. After eating there I always feel I could have gotten better for less other places. If it wasn't convenient we would never go out of the way for it. My kids would rather take the almost hour car ride for a Gene and Jude's than go here. For a 11 and a 8 year old to do that should be a good indication of how they feel about the Dogs there. read more

Used to love Portillo's Garbage Salad but they've recently changed the recipe. It was skimpy in every way, tasted nothing like the original and clearly was an attempt to cut corners at the customer's expense. Even though I only work a few minutes from here, I usually frequent the Crystal Lake location which is always great. On my boyfriend's birthday he said he wanted Portillo's and I knew there was one close to work so I stopped on my way home to get our dinner. When I got to the drive through I was only one of three cars in line, and the two in front of me had already placed their orders and were waiting for pickup. I placed my order at the speaker with no issue but when I got to the window the cashier repeated back an order and total that were not mine. I told her what I had ordered, she found the correct order and read it back to me and then took my debit card and processed the payment and sent me on to the next window. I pulled up to the next window where that cashier repeated the incorrect order and total from the first window and asked for payment. At this point, I was the only one in the drive through, there were no other cars waiting or placing orders. I told her that I had already paid and the order that she read to me was not mine. The cashier immediately went on the defensive and snapped at me saying 'they're telling me you haven't paid.' I explained again that the order she wanted me to pay for was not mine and after I finished she walked into the kitchen part of the restaurant away from the window. A few minutes later she brought me my bag of food, the correct order was read back to me, and I was told 'Sorry, we confused you with another car,' which was odd seeing as there were still no other cars at this point. I drive the 20 minutes home and as my boyfriend is opening his up to eat he see's it's not the Italian beef that was ordered but a sausage that he didn't finish because he didn't like it. I contacted Portillo's corporate office and they apologized profusely and sent me a gift card for more than the value of his meal that was incorrect. I love Portillo's and will continue to eat there, but this was my first and only visit to this location. read more

I usually don't have a problem when I go here and the food is delicious, but today when I got there I tried to use my debit card to pay and they would NOT swipe it because there was no signature on the back and I didn't have any ID with me. I know this is for security reasons but had I been aware of this new rule I would have come prepared, as I have used this card in the past with no difficulty. I was sternly told it would not be swiped and had to leave the line with everyone looking at me. The only reason I'm not giving zero stars for this experience is because one of the workers there was kind enough to take me to the front of the line when I had cash and made me feel comfortable again. Confusion in telling me what when and where. They sent us to sit, and said the food pickup is there. Unfortunately I ordered a salad, so when they called my name I went to the wrong window. Got the info & went to the salad window. However, the salad window did not give me a soda, so then the food window, we had to verify that I was not given a soda with my salad. Unfortunately, the drive thru at his location take forever! So, I ordered by phone to pickup inside. No one on the phone told me there is a special area (that is kind of hidden) for pickups. I went in and as Portillo's is so loud and busy, it can be overwhelming. I waited in line by the register and was eventually told I was in the wrong place. pros: excellent beef, burgers, hot dogs and onion rings cons: last few burgers I ordered, they slapped a piece of cold cheese and wrapped it up without letting the cheese melt. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had here. We had a simple order, 2 beef and cheddar croissants, large cheese fry, and 2 chocolate shakes. When they handed the bag through the car window the bottom of the bag was so soaked with juice it was ripped open on the bottom and dripped all over my car door and was dripping all over the place including all over my hands and pants. It was a mess. I'm not sure how this wasnt noticed by the girl passing the soaking wet bag to us. They also didnt give us any straws. When we pulled up to the window we asked if we could have straws and another bag and they looked at us like we were jerks for requesting something that we shouldnt have even had to request in the first place. I wouldnt have felt the need to write this review based on that alone, however when we got home and opened our food it was awful. It looked like it had been ran over by a truck and was literally a pile of mush with the smallest bit of cheese on just the last inch of the bread. My boyfriend's cheese was on the wrapper, didnt even make it in the sandwhich. Because of the soaking wet juice mess the fries were also soggy and gross.
