It was lunchtime in July 2026 and my boyfriend was surprised to learn that I had never been inside of a Portillo's before (I once got a shake at their drive-thru about a year ago though). So our lunch location was quickly chosen and we went in. Immediately, I was surrounded by vintage Americana memorabilia, reminiscent of a Route 66 diner, in a VERY large space. The shock of the decor was intense yet very exciting! So if you are unaware, this location is one of 107 Portillo's around the US and is a fast-casual hot dog restaurant chain based founded in 1963 out of Chicago. This location opened in 2018 and is one of 6 locations in Indiana. The food is like Five Guys if it specialized in hot dogs instead of burgers and if it went for a maximalist decor concept instead. For lunch, my bf and I ordered: 2 Chicago dogs $3.99 each, 1 Char'diniera dog $4.99 (a pepper and cheese stuffed hot dog), 1 side salad $5.89, and 1 order of onion rings $3.89. The prices are not too bad in my opinion! It took about 5ish minutes for our order to be ready. I thought the meat and bun were of quality and the salad was generous with cheese. My bf loved the limited-time-only Char'diniera hot dog and thought it was one of the best fast food hot dogs he had ever had! High praise indeed haha! Personally, I've had better Chicago style dogs but enjoyed Portillo's version very much. Neither of us had the calorie budget for one of their cake milkshakes - where they put AN ENTIRE SLICE OF CAKE INTO A MILKSHAKE. And yes, it is an incredibly gluttonous 1500 calories. It had been a good 10 years since I had a Portillo's hotdog. I was excited to find out they had one in South Bend. Since I was in a hurry to get on the road I tried the drive-thru. What I love about Portillo's is they have staff out there taking orders and processing payments to expedite the process. It can get busy during lunchtime but they do a great job of speeding people along. I ordered jumbo Chicago dog and an order of cheese fries. The fries were exactly how I remembered them. Crinkle cut with that slightly salted crunch on the outside and soft center. The regular size is enough for two people to share I can only imagine how large the large fries are. Add a cup of cheese sauce for dipping and these were probably my favorite fries I've had all year. Portillo's is still is my favorite place to get a Chicago hot dog! read more

Italian Beef purists will argue who makes the Italian Beef and you will hear of dozens of places with chains usually not mentioned. Since we don't live in an Italian Beef market (except for one who would not make the list) we are happy Portillos (a large chain) makes it so easy to take Italian Beef home. We usually buy 2 once pound frozen packs of Italian Beef. With it comes the gravy. Bread is one of the more critical aspects of a perfect Italian Beef. I once thought I could get it at home and was found I was wrong. A local Chicago bakery makes Portillo's rolls and I found I can get them at a Chicago grocery store for about one half what it would cost at the restaurant. Our freezer is stocked with Italian beef rolls to last perhaps another 5 pounds of meat or so. A one pound package is usually good for 2 dinners or several lunches. The trick is to have it a couple of times and go without for a while so that you crave it again. That way you will never get sick of it. Mishawaka is the closest Portillos' to Grand Rapids. When we're anywhere near here, we will always grab a couple of pounds to take home. Portillo's is definitely a favorite. read more

I've always been a fan of Portillos but the new hot dogs they're using have got to go. The casing is not good. They taste more like a red hot and less like the Vienna beef they're supposed to taste like. I don't know if they did it to cut corners, but I'm not digging it. Maybe next time I'll try an italian beef. Fries are still spot on and the lemon cake shake was amazing. I crave Portillos a few times per year. This was only my first visit here, and I ordered carry out on the app. I ordered a salad and two garden dogs with all the toppings. The toppings were great! As was the bun. Unfortunately both Garden Dogs were cold. Like, refrigerator-cold. Ice cold. Like someone had just pulled them out of the refrigerator and put them into buns. So I don't know if the employees weren't aware that Garden Dogs are supposed to be served hot? I realize that Garden Dogs are a relatively new menu item for Portillo's, but I have ordered them at other locations and they were definitely served hot. Use to drive all the way to Chicago for this and so happy to have this in Mishawaka! That said - What just happened to the size of their Italian beef sandwiches? I took my my brothers here for lunch today and the big beef was significantly smaller than usual. We usual come here at least a handful of times each year for a "brothers" lunch. It's either Portllios or Barnaby's. We flip flop between the two. Before Portillos came to town, it was always Barnaby's for the last 20 yrs (once a month). My one brother got 2 Chicago dogs, fries and drink. Everything was normal. Myself and my other brother both got the big beef,fries and a drink. Drink and fries seemed the same but our big beef's where a lot smaller. We typically get the big beef, eat half and take the other half home. Well bc it is so much smaller now, we could finish them there. I was there in July (I believe) and the size was like it was before, so it must be a recent thing. The food was great, Nathan (one of the bus boys) was very kind and attentive to us and made use smile while telling us how nice of a day it was while getting my brothers refills on their sodas. The workers are always so nice and polite. Hate to see shrinkflation hit my favorite Sandwhich . The funny thing is - we never really pay attention to price. Ordered a jumbo hot dog plus a 2 regular hot dog meal and we ended up receiving exact same 3 hot dogs so I don't know what's different about the jumbo one. I took it up and talked to a manager and got a measly "sorry" and she said they'd make a new one. No offer for a refund or free item was given. I waited over 35 minutes for my food. Everyone in my party that ordered 15-20 minutes after me got there food first. People out in the lounge waiting for there food got there food before me. I ended up talking to the cashier and someone else asking about my salad and grilled chicken sandwich. I got no apology for the 35+ minutes I waited for my food. I tried to call over the manager and he totally ignored me. I have been to this location 3 times and every single time they lose my order and I get no apology or compensation. The lady up front was very rude and told me the food will come out when it does. So much for not arguing with there customers. The lady took no interest or motivation to help me until I asked the cashier and someone else. I wish I could give 00000 stars. Stopped here on way home from MKE. I will say that I had heard of this place but never been to one - and originally thought we would go they the drive-thru. However, after seeing a physical body taking orders in drive thru and being first-timers, we decided to go in and eat. This place is massive - so many seating options and counters and older signage and relics on the walls - really cool looking. The menu was hard to navigate being new here - but I settled on the 2 dogs meal and wanted to upgrade to onion rings but they were out. Dogs were good - I got them with everything on them. Crinkle cut fries were good. I also added a cake shake which sounds good but most of the cake was stuck in the bottom so I would regather get a regular shake next time . Would recommend. This was my first time trying this location, so I wanted to try a little bit of everything. I ordered through their online service for faster service snd to give myself a realistic experience that many customers might use once they see how long the lines are for drive through. Online ordering is so common now that it's become the main method for ordering food on the go. As a bonus my food was ready before the suggested time which is great because I was extremely early and this cut my wait time inside down. For my order I ordered the char grilled maxwell street polish sausage, the regular size hotdog, the bacon cheeseburger with one pattie, a small fry, a small onion ring, a strawberry shortcake and a small coke with no ice. The prices were a bit high, but I was expecting quality without filler. My regular size hot dog was a bit less cooked then I prefer. It seemed to be just boiled. This is not the experience I'm use to from the Chicago location. Although all of the topping were good My onion rings had an excellent crisp with a perfectly cooked onion ring inside. I could also taste the oil, but it wasn't bad. The size of a small is also a bit closer to a medium which makes it worth the price. This was the case of my fries as well, but those were nothing to brag about. They were average crinkle cut fries with far too much salt and quite cold. My Polish sausage was also nothing to brag about. The onions were cooked to perfection, but my meat itself was a bit cold. My burger had a delicious char flavor on it, but seemed to be lacking a bit. For the cost I was expecting a bit more patty with more ingredients. It was also a bit cold. Just cold enough to not even melt my cheese. Now we get to the good part or that's what I did after my meal. Yes, I'm talking about the strawberry shortcake. It was quite sweet. Big on the cake, but light on actual strawberries. The strawberries that were underneath were not fresh either. I wouldn't recommend this this if you are looking for something fruity and delicious. All together I would say I've had better at other locations in the surrounding area. It's best to save your money unless you happen to be one of the lucky ones that come when the service is better and the food is actually hot. read more

We're truly blessed to have a good beef sandwich restaurant like Portillo's in our area, and this one is among the cleanest and staffed with very pleasant employees.. just recently learned that Preston who was a manager there left for elsewhere, he was definitely an asset and will be missed.. but everyone is so nice, and the food is fantastic! Tried this place for the first time yesterday because it was once a "hot and new restaurant" and heard good things from my brother-in-law so here we are.  We went thru the drive thru, I ordered the double stuffed cheese ravioli, my husband got the meatball marinara sandwich.  It came out tp pnly $13 something which was great. Since we went thru the drive-thru I don't know anything about the interior but the outside was nice looking. The food was better than I expect for a place with a drive thru and for what we paid.  Next time we come thru South Bend I'm putting this place at the top of my list.  The cheese ravioli was sooo good and I enjoyed the side of bread.  My husband basically inhaled his sandwich he enjoyed it so much. read more

I had never been here before but my in laws recommended it and they were paying so why not?! I am not a hot dog type of person so I got the spicy chicken sandwich. It has lettuce, tomato, and hot giardinera sauce on it. I thought for $11 for a combo meal that was pricey. The chicken on the sandwich was good. It was large and took up more than the bun. We ordered online for pick up and I liked you had the option to specify no salt on the fries or the fries extra crispy. However they were not labeled when they came out so who knows if we got the fries the way we wanted. My 5 year old was no impressed by the hot dog, nor the bun. My husband stated his beef and sausage sandwich was "all right." I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here in the future but it was an experience to say I tried it. read more

On a recent trip to her hometown, all I kept hearing was "Portillo's", so I was very happy to stop at this one in Mishawaka, during our return. Our kids were with us and they were hungry. This visit left all of us feeling completely satisfied. There was so much food! If you are not familiar with Chicago-style hot dogs, be prepared for a little bit of a tricky and perhaps slightly unmanageable wiener. Ohioans like me would have never thought to put spicy peppers, tomatoes, and celery salt on a dog. I admit I am a convert--it's really the BEST hot dog condiment combo ever! To top it off, my daughter was encouraged to try their famous 'cake shake'. It's a bit much for me, but to put a chocolate cake in a blender with the milkshake base...pure genius for those with a sweet tooth! The Italian beef was enjoyed by others in our little group who already knew what a Portillo's Chicago-style hot dog was like. That will be something I try next time around.
