Move over Weinerschnitzel, a new dog heavyweight is in town. Portillo's has been rapidly expanding in Texas from Houston and Dallas and now into the Central and South regions. They did not forget about Lubbock, though, with a Portillo's opening just a few months ago in the Canyon West shopping center. Known for their Chicago style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches, I do not know why they decided Texas was the move, especially with our market being fatigued with so many fast food options, but I am not mad at it. Inside, they have four different kiosks to order from plus three registers. There is also an extensive amount of seating. It is like they were expecting a lot of hype. It feels a little ambitious, but when I was driving down Marsha Sharp last Saturday, I saw a full parking lot and a wraparound drive through line. Maybe they understood Lubbock's greed more than I did. I walked in and decided to order at the register and went for their number two combo, which is two Chicago dogs, a drink, and fries. However, the lady taking my order put every item in individually and asked me for sizes, and I think it cost more, which is a little unfair. I should have just ordered at the kiosk. The order came out not fast food fast but fast casual fast food fast in a to go bag. Two glizzies were both individually wrapped, and they had a good weight to them. They were actually pretty loaded with a quarter pickle, relish, mustard, peppers, tomatoes, and chopped onions. The poppy seed bun was nice too. I enjoyed both of them but was surprised at how much kick those peppers had. I was asked if I wanted cheese sauce, and I said sure. I thought it was included, but why would it be? I paid for it and really enjoyed it with my fries. It is basically artificial cheese goop, but it was thick and better than most I have had and complemented the salty and crisp crinkle cut fries. To close, I ordered a small chocolate cake shake because when is the next time I will be close to a Portillo's? Other than it being thicker than a Scottish accent, it was pretty good with actual cake bits in there. This is a new place, so there's obviously going to need to be a bit of grace extended due to they. We ordered a chili-dog, and an Italian Beef/Sausage sandwich. Both with fries. Not bad pricing, and you can either order from a person or a kiosk. We chose the person. She was quite helpful in navigating the menu and choices. Food came out, and it was pretty good. Beef sandwich was very good, but would probably just get the beef next time and not add the sausage. Just easier to eat. Hot dog was pretty good. Just a regular hot dog. Fries were good, but were so salty that we didn't finish them. Food was fine, atmosphere is great. However the main problem we saw was with the employees. The ones behind the counter that were work were fine. However, there were several groups of employees standing in front of the drink station loudly talking and laughing, blocking the whole thing, and completely oblivious to the customers standing there waiting to get drinks. Ketchup dispenser was broken, and the same group stood and watched as customer after customer came to try to get ketchup, but could not. There were other employees standing around the restaurant leaning against things and staring at their phones. Not the look that I'm guessing the management wants for the place. Grabbed lunch here, the place is super clean, brand new, and staff were very friendly. Had the Italian beef, hot and spicy, dipped. Photo does it no justice (hard to look anything but soggy when it's dipped) but trust me it's good. Bread held up well to the juice as well! WHERE'sthe BEEF? Soooooo disappointed. Hopefully my bad experience is growing pains for a new location. I have lived in Chicago. I was excited when Portillo's opened in Dallas. There weee some growing pains there as well, but not like the Lubbock store. Manager was screaming at everyone virtually the whole time. Workers were not bothered by urgency. Order was slow to receive when the dining room had less than 8 people present. Hot dog bun was old and stale. Beef n cheddar sandwich lacked beef. A small glob of beef was dropped in the middle of the croissant. The small amount of beef was shocking. I did bring this to the manager's attention. He told me in essence that the Chicago stores were using too much beef and this store was going by the weight of the meat Over the years I have been to numerous Chicagoland locations, the store in Scottsdale, AZ, and several DFW stores. Either corporate has made drastic cuts or the Lubbock store is a lone wolf. The taste and temperature of the beef was sub par. Hopefully, things will improve to the Chicago standard, but not today. Good hot dogs, service was quick and it's clean and cool decor. The Chicago style hot dog is good and the sauces there are good as well.

Nothing amazing but food is good, and pricy. This must be a northern company with northern pricing. To feed the family I can get a much better and healthier meal at finer dinning. You can either order in person or at a kiosk! They serve hotdogs, burgers, beef sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and salads! Wife and kiddo ordered the hotdog which is Chicago style. They enjoyed their meal and said it was delicious! I ordered the chargrill Maxwell Polish style hotdog. It was okay. The restaurant is very nice and new inside! Let's start with the order.....a combo is not really a combo, it's not a meal, it's just a vague Chicago idea of what you should combine to order according to the manager. So when the picture shows the "combo" with a sandwich, fries, and a drink....its à la carte. All of it. Did you think included those fries....nope. Did you think it included the drink....nope. Peppers or even cheese...nope. Just bland beef and dried last week's bread. So while I'm waiting for a horrible meal....there is a bag in the order ready line behind the counter....and I'm watching the employees walk up and start eating the fries out of the bag. Yeah. That's great. I ask the employee if that was my bag....and the shocked look was "um no, we are making you some fries right now". So after I get my ice cold fries in the bag (yes, ice cold) I get the incredibly sub par meal. Never, never, never-ever again will my family or I enter Portillo's in any city. And by the way for Lubbock to have an EMPTY new restaurant at 8:30 on a Thursday night....I don't expect it to be open long. read more

Friends invited us to come try this chain out of Chicago. Since he's from there, he was very excited to play "tour guide". Portillo's [pronounced poor-til-o's] is known for it's Italian Beef sandwich. Which tastes amazing! You can choose dry (no "gravy" - which is a version of au jus), classic (some gravy - which will run out of the sandwich), or dipped (which has to be served in a plastic bag because it's soaked). Our friend described the "Chicago hunch" - a stance used when grabbing a sandwich at the counter, so that when you bite into it and the juice inevitability runs everywhere, it doesn't get on your clothes during lunch break. You can also add spicy and/or sweet peppers (I recommend both) to the sandwich. They have a chopped salad with chicken, which is available in a spicy version. Their chocolate cake is magnificently moist and their fries are extra salty. The restaurant is shiny, clean, and new. You can order on Portillo's app (which includes a rewards club), kiosks at the front door, or at the counter. Their menu includes sausage and burgers, but if you don't try the Italian Beef, you are missing out on the flavor that made Portillo's what it is. read more

I ordered the Italian beef sandwich, very little vegetables that I paid extra for. My husband ordered a burger. They were both very dry and no taste or flavor. The building is nice, and I loved the decor, but we will not be back. It would be different if it was issues that could be resolved but with it being dry and no taste or flavor you can't really change that. Service was very, very slow even though they were not busy. Nice aesthetic, fun place. We went last weekend, placed our orders on kiosks. One order took about 45 mins, which was one burger meal. The 2nd order was lost and made after we asked management, after an hour. Kiosks went down during this time. It is hard to know when orders are ready. They have a screen showing order numbers but its not very visible from parts of the restaurant. I heard some numbers being called without a microphone, so they weren't heard unless you were standing right there. The hot dog was really good, better than others in town, but not worth the cost, by far. The burger was meh, at best. It was like an unseasoned frozen patty. Very underwhelming, not worth the price at all. The cheddar beef was ok, nothing special, not worth the price. The fries were cheap, frozen crinkle cut, undercooked, no seasoning. To me, if these are your specialty items, you choose to offer a smaller menu, then what you serve should be of higher quality than local fast food. The place was fairly clean, I didn't see staff on the floor cleaning tables, people were doing it themselves with just napkins. Staff were friendly and fixing issues as they became aware of them. I ordered a chili cheese dog with fries, the food was okay. Fries could have been warmer but my slight issue is the description for the chili cheese dog. No where in the description on the app or website, does it mention that the chili they use has beans in it. I think it's necessary to add that into the description of that food item on the because I don't know many people or restaurants even that use hotdog chili with beans in it. Plus you have to consider the fact that some folks may have an allergy to beans while others just don't like beans. read more
