So I asked about the Turkish bagel with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and bacon. The lady at the cash suggested an item which was similar but it also comes with egg. I went with her suggestion and told her to also add bacon to my order. I even confirmed that I was okay with the egg that comes with it. My total came to almost $6 ($5.95?) so I thought, ok paying $6 for a breakfast style bagel, it should be good. But it wasn't at all. It was soggy even though the bagel itself was toasted and the bacon was over cooked and hard. *Keep in mind, this bagel at full price is actually $8.99+ tax (see below in my next paragraph for details why).* So for $10.16 after tax, I had expected a much better quality. I could've had a better breakfast bagel at McDonald's or Tim Hortons for half or even 1/3 the price. On another note, the horrible customer service I received was from the lady who served me at cash. After a gentleman made my order, I told him that it should have came with cheese and egg which he missed adding it in. The lady jumped in and said that I didn't order that even though I confirmed my order with her when paying. Then she insisted that I pay an extra $3+ tax for the egg since apparently what I wanted is actually $8.99+ tax. I told her exactly what I wanted in the beginning and even confirmed with her a second time when paying. She was also the one who made the suggestion... so I don't understand how she kept fighting that I needed to pay $3+ tax extra and how she kept saying that I was in the wrong. If you're working in a customer service environment, making them feel like they're in the wrong even though they weren't, isn't professional at all and will lose customers like me.

I had flagged this eatery for a while. It was nice to drop by at long last and do a return visit, too. Mamajoun is roughly one block west of Warden Avenue, on the south side of Ellesmere Road. I had no problem finding a parking spot in the plaza. I backed into a spot practically in front of the main entrance and walked in. I was warmly greeted by Mihran, who owns the eatery with his wife. He was so welcoming and took the time to chat with me. I have had a papajoun wrap in the past, which is a flatbread with ground beef, onions, garlic, and red pepper paste. He let me know that his dough recipe came from his grandfather, which makes the dough so light and malleable. I had traditional Armenian toppings in my wrap, such as tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and pickled turnips. If you are getting your wraps to go, he carefully packages them such that they still remain hot and toasty for thirty minutes. I ended up driving back to Markham and enjoying my wrap in downtown Markham. It was warm and yummy. When I first walked into the eatery, I was looking at bags of mante. I smelled the bag and it automatically made me hungry. He enjoys serving several beef mante in chicken broth, with tomato sauce and yogurt. He let me know that the chicken stock in bottles at the nearby Costco was what he used and they were of high quality. Good to know! I ended up getting some tomato dill soup from Farm Boy and put my mante in them. It was amazing! His instructions to bake them in the oven at 400°F for five to eight minutes and place them in soup is amazing. I asked if folks simply popped mante in their mouths like popcorn. He said that it was a perfectly acceptable way to enjoy them. The pack of zaatar that I picked up was excellent. Mihran said that I could freeze them. When I wanted one, just take one out of the freezer and let it thaw for fifteen minutes. Each zaatar tastes so fresh and yummy. I paid for my items both times with a credit card. This place does not accept American Express. I feel that most businesses don't these days. I thanked him for all his help and taking the time to speak with me. The pasta had fresh house-made texture with firm bite (in a good way, not under-cooked firmness). Noodle was thicker side (my preference). It started with some scrumptious cakes ($14; normally 4 to an order), a soft steamed rice cake topped with finely chopped preserved radish. Much silkier than radish cake, it's a cross between that and silken tofu. And while the sweet and salty radish relish was a good start, the dish needed something else (maybe scallions or fried shallots) and more of their famous sambal as I couldn't taste a lick of heat. One dish that stood the test of time is the dhal and roti ($14), a deeply flavoured yellow lentil curry topped with onion chili oil. Yet, it's the flaky Malay roti that really makes the dish - piping hot and well toasted with crispy edges. I could eat this with a dip, as a wrap, or stuffed. If dining a la carte, it may be wise to order some of the roti with the satay veg ($19), to dip into the thick savoury peanut sauce but also to counteract the saltiness of the dish. Served without a side, the vegetables didn't need so much seasoning, especially the rapini which almost seemed like it was marinated in salt water. It'd be wise for Fat Choi to serve this with rice. Plenty of slices of "barbeque pork" seitan are tucked into a fluffy steamed bun to create the char siu bao ($19). It's tasty, sandwiched with a large slice of pickled daikon, leaf lettuce, and scallion mayo. We all agreed something has changed with the prosperity tossed slaw ($24). It's still made with twenty ingredients that create a cacophony of textures, but the ratio of the ingredients has changed - more cabbage and radish and less herbs? Perhaps it just wasn't dressed with enough of the yuzu plum dressing and way too many peanuts, but the salad just didn't pack that punch of flavour of the past. The same can't be said about the cumin noods ($26). If you're a fan of Northern Chinese dishes like dan dan noodles, grilled lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles, the dish is the baby born from the trio. But you must like cumin as there's tons of it! Crumbled tofu was flavoured with the spice, a light helping of numbing Szechuan pepper (thank you!), chili oil, and Chinese vinegar to create a spicy and savoury concoction. The flat ribbons of noodles had a lovely springy texture and could hold up against the sauce. Make sure to get a bite with the crunchy celery, scallions, and micro greens as they help balance out the cumin.
