We arrived just as the restaurant opened at 4pm. Even though not all the staff had arrived we felt well looked after. The ambiance is amazing, including the Italian music mixed with soft rock. Portobello's recently opened in Derby, and we were hopeful that this would become a new favorite of ours for dinner. Our experience tonight was average, and I don't think we'll be in a rush to return. Being only a month old, issues like service I'm sure are still being worked out, but I don't know about the food. With the label of fine Italian dining, I'm holding them to a higher standard. When we arrived, we were asked if we had reservations. We did not, as we impulsively decided to visit, and we were appreciative that they found a table for us. After sitting with our menus for quite a while, we overheard a staff member tell a server "you better go take that table, they've been sitting there for a while". Overall, the timing of dishes arriving to the table went well. However, before we left, we were disappointed to hear the table next to us be told of specials by a different server that we were not offered. Besides being left to wait for the check for a bit and these other little mishaps, the service could've been worse considering how new they are. Onto the food. Complimentary bread arrived to the table, and it had the texture of day old bread that had been microwaved (I could be wrong, but all of us at the table felt the same). Olive oil was seasoned nicely and flavorful. We ordered the hot antipasto for an appetizer, and the presentation was definitely a bit lacking. I was surprised to see little neck clams were used for the clams casino, and my parents felt there was an odd flavor to the stuffed mushrooms. Calamari was cooked perfectly, and we enjoyed the marinara sauce. Eggplant Rollatini was okay. Salad courses came before the meal, and I had asked for Italian dressing, but it tasted more like oil and vinegar with oregano to me. I had the pappardelle bolognese, which was okay, and seemed to have a cheese mixed into the sauce as well. My dad enjoyed his chicken portobello, and my mom's chicken francese wasn't bad, but could've used more lemon in the sauce. We just had higher expectations. Lastly, ambiance. We were in a pretty bright corner of the restaurant and thought some mood lighting in our area would've been nice. Curtains around the windows would've made it warmer as well. With it being so cold out, we definitely felt a draft, and it could've helped break up looking out into the darkness of the main road. I had never been in the building prior to this restaurant, but it seemed like renovations had been done, and the restaurant was decorated nicely otherwise. The air vent near us turned on and seemed to be blowing cold air, and it had a weird rotting odor when it first came on that was a bit unsettling. Nothing was particularly bad here, but as I said, I'm holding them to a higher standard for a fine dining establishment. Portobello's Restaurant is on par with the affulent, Winter Park, FL restaurant, The Allegria Cucina, owned by my friend and neighbor. They simply knocked it out of the ballpark! We absolutely loved our elegant Italian waiter and Menu descriptions. The bread was fresh with herb-scented olive oil and combined with the rich drinks and ambience - it was truly Heaven. We enjoyed a house salad and in perfect timing arrived our entrees, Chicken Portobello - absolutely exquisite.......all worries and stresses "evaporated." Hearing Sinatra crooning in the background -- it was decorated and packed - a great holiday atmosphere. If you wish to feel like you are on a Fifth Avenue Movie set with the most excellent Chefs to cater to you, then make a reservation! It's how it should be. They are well worth the money! Stopped recently to see what the restaurant had to offer. Was pleasantly surprised just how different it was from the predecessor restaurant. The bar and dining has been completely remodeled into a very nice fine dining experience. The menu offered many options. We were there for a late lunch we had a couple of appetizers and wine. Service was friendly, prompt and attentive. The food was spectacular. Prices very typical ($$$) for a restaurant of such quality. First time visiting Portobello's. I went with my brother and 2 nephews. It was quiet and I was surprised there were very few customers when we went but this is a new restaurant I had fried mozzarella as an appetizer it was very good with a large enough portion to share. I had the chicken parmigiana dinner which comes with a salad that was excellent. All fresh ingredients. and I chose the side of pasta over a potato dish which also very good. The Main course it's self the chicken parmigiana was very good. Cooked perfectly. The portion was large in fact I only ate a few pieces of ziti and about 2/3 of the chicken parmigiana and I was full. I took the rest home and had it for lunch today. I had the lemoncello cake for dessert and it was also very good. My nephew had the New York strip steak and it was a generous size and cooked to perfection. I'll have that next time. Our water and drinks were quickly replenished and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. Service was very friendly and responsive. The only thing I can think of improving is the service seemed a little slow for the food but I do not like feeling rushed either I definitely recommend trying this restaurant and plan on going back soon read more

A friend recommended this restaurant so my husband and I tried it last night and we were not disappointed!! The food and drinks were amazing, staff were very nice and the prices were great for the quantities. The Portobello punch was delicious! We opted to sit inside but did check out the outdoor patio on our way out which is very nice. Temperature in restaurant 59 degrees. When asked if it could be warmer, staff were told to put a napkin over the thermostat to hide the temp. Temp is 58 degrees. We were 2 of 8 people in the restaurant. Salad consisted of one slice of cucumber cut in half and one grape tomato also cut in half on a bed of lettuce. Time it took for two pasta dishes to arrive was around a half hour. We weren't in a hurry but seemed excessively long. Marinara sauce was like soup. Watered down and runny. Inside decor simple but nice but not worth the time or cost to visit. read more

Ordered the Zuppo de Pesce which the menu listed as "Fresh scallops, clams, mussels, calamari and shrimp". We received our meals, no scallops. We mentioned this to the waitress and she said they were out of scallops. We said, you should have told us this as we would have ordered something else. Then the owner came over and we said the same thing. He said "no scallops because they are too expensive". Are you serious? They were listed on the menu as the first ingredient. It's the only reason we ordered that dish. Nothing was offered, no amount off for leaving out the scallops. We will not be back. read more

Our group of 4 ate here Friday evening and I have to rave about how good a find this is. The interior is spacious and upscale with tablecloths and new silverware. Menu is very nice and complete with 3 added specials. Service by our waiter, Norbi, was excellent. Entrees come with choice of fresh salad or soup which was delicious. Prices were very reasonable especially when compared to New Haven where we often dine. My shrimp scampi was very good with 5 jumbo shrimp and a mountain of angel hair. My wife's chicken marsala was delicious, as were the other 2 entrees, stuffed flounder and scallop and shrimp dish. Food came out in reasonable time and was fresh and hot. The adjacent bar area was large sized and attractive but not busy. Wine by the bottle is half priced on Thursdays, which is a very nice perk. Overall, I highly recommend trying Portobello for its great food and service. Only drawback was a difficult entrance into nice parking lot especially if coming from westbound on route 34. It's a tough turn. I hope it is busier than it was last night. Bravo!! read more

We had a great dinner last night. I ordered this veal chop special, which is basically a fantastic streak cover in a poor wine reduction! My wife got her usual Bolognese, which is the best around. All dinners come with soup or salad ... who does that anymore!? I would suggest the pasta fagioli if available. Service was on point our waiter Norvi was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.
