    Brushetta Appetizer

The food is not good. The restaurant was friendly and clean but the food was not good. The bread was like a hotdog roll, the brushetta was on soggy bread and the pasta and sauce was a very sweet red sauce without meat and the texture was off.

First off, our waitress was nothing less than excellent. She was wonderful, caring, and quite awesome. As for the food - that's where it goes downhill. My daughter had the Arrabiata. After two bites, she was pretty much done with it. I tasted it and it was def not good. Rather than thinly sliced bits of prosciutto, as one would expect, it was more like a blob of terrible tasting prosciutto. I ordered the Antipasto salad. It wasn't anything to write home about. Though it was beautiful when it came to the table, the flavor was not good, and again, I feel like the prosciutto is just horrible quality. As for their Italian dressing - they should really be ashamed of that - it's terrible. Honestly, every time we've eaten at the Arboretum Portofino's in Charlotte, it has always been great. I would have thought this newer location in Indian Land would be the same. I could not have been more wrong.

The food and atmosphere was excellent. We really enjoyed the service... they make you feel part of the family.

We made a reservation because we weren't sure how crowded it would be on a Saturday night. Reservations weren't really necessary as the place was not busy. We weren't sure the dress code either, hard to gather from their website. We went business casual but we could have just done in our Saturday afternoon casual as it's not upscale but neighborhood comfortable. The decor is honestly pretty bland. Everything was just gray and there were no pops of color anywhere. The lighting was cool and the wine wall was nice but it just didn't have much character. We were greeted quickly by our server who was polite but not overly friendly. She gave us the drink specials and we got started with a few beers. A runner brought a basket of warm bread and butter which is always a nice start. We ordered the garlic bread and the zucchini fritti for appetizers. They came out quickly and presented nicely. The garlic cheese bread wasn't very garlicky, had more of a rosemary flavor so it wasn't our favorite. The zucchini was shaved and had a nice flavor. Because it was so small it was kind of hard to eat. I like my zucchini with some ranch and we asked for some and kind of got a weird reception from the kitchen staff. I mean we are in the south people - ranch is a staple! For entrees we tried a few different things. We had the white pizza, the chicken francese, the chicken crusted Romano, and the sliced beef rib cut. All the dishes came out warm and with nice presentation. The pizza was the most lackluster. It was just average and did not have much flavor. The crusted chicken Romano was a highlight with a nice flavor from the vodka sauce. The other two dishes tasted good but were nothing amazing. The mashed potatoes were the best side dish. The roasted potatoes were a bit on the burnt side and lacked any real seasoning. We had an overall pleasant experience but will not rush back to this spot. If you are in the neighborhood I'm sure it's convenient but if you want a great Italian meal this would not be my recommendation.

In fact, the kitchen accidentally made an extra order of Stracciatella and instead of letting it go to waste, he brought it out for us to try. It's not something I would have ordered on my own, but it was absolutely delicious, and now it's something I'll order every time I come back! For my entrée, I had the Penne alla Vodka and upgraded to the homemade noodles. The homemade pasta truly set this dish apart from other Italian restaurants I've visited. It was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The food, service, and hospitality were all exceptional. One thing to note is that the restaurant isn't very large, so I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. This place is absolutely worth it, and I can't wait to return!

The biggest issue was that my vegetarian friend was accidentally served meat, which made her sick. While the staff apologized and offered a complimentary dessert, they never actually came back to take our dessert order. Instead, they brought the complimentary cannoli they normally provide for our other friends birthday and then charged us for it, which felt very strange given the circumstances. Service was inconsistent throughout the meal. Our cocktails were never empty, but our water glasses sat empty for most of the evening without a refill. It was one of those experiences where the attention seemed focused on the wrong things. The food was also not up to the standard I've come to expect. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't as delicious as previous visits. The bread was the standout and absolutely slapped, but the rest of the meal fell short of what I've had here before. We were also seated in my least favorite sunroom room where when you're in the booth you're basically at risk of head-butting the folks behind you. I'm hoping this was just an off night because I've had much better experiences at Little Mama's in the past.

Susan M joined me for dinner Sat evening at 530p. We shared the calamari, WAY too much breading, diminished the flavor, just not good. Susan had the Lasagna, she said it was very good and good portion so she got a 'go' box. I had the salmon which was a nice size portion. Not too keen on the broccolini side but the flavor was good. The service from Heidy was good, the kitchen was slow getting our appetizer out, almost 10 minutes waiting on it. Our server came out THREE times to tell us the calamari would be out any minute. It WAS NOT! The BIG issue for me was parking. The 'go Ballantyne' website indicates Valet parking is available. It is NOT! Very misleading and frustrating when you see it in writing and then show up and learn it's not available. Then you have to find and figure out the parking situation. The Hostess at the restaurant said they HAD Valet at one time, but no longer. I also thought the ambience was NOT true to how it's described. Very LOUD, dudes in cut off jeans and tee shirts, kids running around unattended and parents chasing them. We had a group of ladies next to our 'two top' who were loud & cackaling through our entire meal. NOT what I call 'family hospitality'. This place is exactly the reason why I try to avoid the large FRANCHISE restaurants. Then the bill was so HIGH, way more than what is reasonable for what we had, OVER $80.00 not including tip, a diet coke was $4.75, they charge MORE for the exact same item on the dinner menu than the lunch menu, what's that about? This is a Franchise owned by the Cheese Cake Factory so in my opinion, they push 'the MARKETING' message rather than deliver on the substance which is real service, quality food and excellent atmosphere. Got to PAY that high rent at the BOWL. They gave me NO reason to return and I WON'T be returning and recommend you find other options for Italian. It's all hype and little substance. There are so many other independently owned Italian options in the area that offer everything and more than this place.
