I regret not taking a photo of my food!!!! The Monte Cristo is a work of art. The service is so laid back and welcoming. Every kind of person is in here, one of the oldest post offices in American history. The view is spectacular. They are aware of who is here, and I have a sense of peace here. The prices are ridiculously for inflation so I'm impressed with their ability to keep costs low. The vegan options meet our needs too!! I love it here. The architecture is unique. read more

Swung by Post Commons this week & had some AMAZING food! The service was impeccable - AND the ambiance? It is an INCREDIBLE building! Big, huge place, but feels intimate at a table chatting. I have said this before and I'll say it again: Alton has some of the best coffee shops on this side of the river. Post commons is amazing because it offers several coffee options, yummy breakfast/brunch options, and it can also be rented out as an event space! What I order: the coffee is okay. Sometimes it tastes a little burnt; however, I usually go later in the day so that is understandable. The cappuccino is probably the best on this side of the river. It is what a cappuccino should be. I have also gotten the sweet potato hash and one of the breakfast sandwiches and they were delicious! The atmosphere is amazing! Totally worth the experience. (I have heard it is the 2nd biggest coffee shop in the world.) The owners have spent a lot of time and love transforming this place into something great. On certain nights of the week they have live music and inventive alcoholic drinks! The one weird thing about this place is the hours. They close at 4 (I think most days) and aren't open on Sunday. This place is huge and beautiful! It's a former post office--from the era when post offices in cities like Alton were impressive buildings. A fair amount of stained glass and other gorgeous accents. We worked here for an hour or so before we went to Josephine's. He had a hot chocolate and I have one of their seasonal tea offerings. I think it was called Sunshine Dust. It was made of the "cup of sunshine tea" by Big Heart Tea Company plus coconut milk and maybe something else. I hope to come back soon to order food! read more

For atmosphere, it doesn't get much better than this. Lots of vintage memorabilia scattered throughout the coffee shop. I liked how they kept the classic stuff and put a nice, modern finish on it without ruining the original feel of the place. I went on a weeknight and was excited to try their coffee and food. The only reason I'm knocking off a star is because the man behind the counter was not friendly at all. Acted like I was wasting his time. I asked for food..."kitchen closed at 2." I asked if they made blended frozen drinks. "No." Just very short and not polite, didn't leave a good impression. Maybe I caught him on a bad night. Planning to explore a new area for us and breakfast was a priority. Both hubby and me got the slinger. Absolutely delicious. The gravy was not thick or overwhelming. The biscuits were so big and fluffy and would have been amazing plain. I also decided to try their Seasonal Fog which was a lavender London fog with Almond milk. My friend and I went at 7:00 on a Friday. I got the pretzel logic with sausage. It was absolutely delicious. We had no trouble getting a seat. We had a meeting at 8:00 so we needed to leave by 7:30 and we were able to do so. It was so beautiful on the inside. They have all of the old decor from the original post office. I ordered an apple walnut cake, the slinger, and a simple black coffee. The coffee was rich and flavorful. The cake was almost too good. I ate a couple bites and closed the to go box immediately. Then the slinger came out .. eggs were cooked to perfection, the biscuits were fluffy yet dense, and the bacon and greens topped it off nicely! I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're ever in Alton, IL. The view from the patio is stunning and the ambience of the entire establishment will take you back in time. What a gem. Large comfortable coffeehouse in an historic building of my hometown, Alton, Illinois. Amazing atmosphere with high ceilings and river views. This place rivals great coffeeshops in San Francisco (Blue Bottle) yet its 3x bigger and a fraction of the price. Downtown Alton is such a unique place. Wonderful stop for breakfast! All our food was delicious and the coffee was bountiful. We stopped in around 830 on a Saturday morning and there was good business, but not too busy. We got our coffee promptly and our food shortly followed. The ordering is deli style where are you order the counter and they will bring it to your table. if we had the opportunity we would definitely return. The building itself was something to marvel at. This was an awesome place. What an amazing job of converting this old post office into a really cool coffee, meeting, and event space. When you walk in the door you are greeted by the original post office boxes. Inside they have both a coffee bar (and food) and a separate bar serving various libations. We visited on Saturday morning and the place was quite busy. They have room to add more tables, and at least this particular morning, they needed them. The coffee was very tasty, served in really cool custom made cups by the local pottery company, Mississippi Mud Pottery. We ordered the burrito and the pumpkin french toast. They were both tasty but the food was only warm and not hot. I suspect the burrito is not homemade, due to the fact that the fillings were only warm. Even the french toast wasn't hot. This is what kept my rating from being 5 stars instead of 4. I would highly recommend a visit to this place and will definitely go again the next time I visit Alton. read more

First time in and it was great! This place is gem. It's so awesome inside! Very spacious and just unique! Who flips a early 1900's post office into a coffee place! The history of the place and the town alone are worth the visit. As it relates to the food it's also terrific. They know how to craft drinks and the breakfast sandwich I had was tasty. I had a cortado, but forgot to take a pic. I rarely do 5 star ratings but this one was easy to do. I drove up from Nashville and I can't wait to visit it again. read more

A breath of fresh air. Whenever we visit from LA we make sure to hit this spot for the best breakfast and coffee east of the Mississippi.

We visited on a snowy Saturday morning and had breakfast and coffee. The place is so atmospheric with big stained glass windows and oversized fireplace mantles sitting around. The counter service was friendly but we were a little disappointed with the food selection. The menu is a lot smaller right now that you would think based on a scan of pics here on Yelp. Many of those items have been discontinued. I was told they have had kitchen staff changes recently so the food has changed. The food we did have was pretty good. I really enjoyed the breakfast tacos. The avocado toast was decent, but nothing special. There are a lot of avocado toasts in the world, but maybe not so many in Alton, Illinois! The coffee is absolutely wonderful so I would like to visit again, maybe after warm weather returns. It would be nice to see what's on the menu in a few months. read more
