This place is terrible. I tried to send a package to Australia instead of going to the post office. What a mistake! The man who helped me entered the wrong shipping speed, so he tried to charge me $140 instead of the $80 he had quoted me. I ended up paying $100 because he said he couldn't get his money back after he had entered the shipping in the computer. THEN the package was returned to me because the customs form was filled out incorrectly. My $100 lesson - go to the post office. I do NOT recommend this place. read more

The owner is rude, judgmental, and completely incapable of handling even the slightest criticism without flying off the handle. If you don't believe me, just scroll through the 1-3 star reviews here and on Google. Read his responses. They tell you everything you need to know. Instead of addressing concerns professionally, he launches into personal attacks, insults customers, and accuses anyone who leaves a critical review of being a fake. The service is poor, the prices are outrageously marked up, and on top of that, you risk being publicly mocked if you say anything about it. You're far better off going literally anywhere else: a different postal convenience shop, USPS, even a pigeon with a decent sense of direction would be more reliable and respectful. Santa Monica Postal Services Dimitri puts your needs before his and tries his best to find the best and cost-effective solution for you. I really respect that. Helping others is the first thing that he does, seems a constantly trait. I did not have money on me and he does not have Apple Pay, the solution he provided was to give the money to him tomorrow or next time I am here. I was surprised and impressed. No one, in today's society, has this kind of kindness and trust. I told him I would come back tomorrow and return the money. Not only that, he saw me sweating after walking 2 miles to his place, he insisted I took one of the cold water from the fridge. Of course, free of charge. He also asked me whether I was hungry, he had some food in the fridge for people. A lady came in, she was sending a package to her son in Massachusetts for his 24th birthday in 3 days. Instead of choosing priority that would arrive on the birthday of her son, she chose regular mail. Hearing this, Dimitri offered her to pay for regular and he would send by priority so her son could get the birthday package on time. The difference: $9, out of his own expense. Today, when I steeped in to return the money and mail another regular letter, he was already helping someone else. After he helped me with the mail, the guy returned with a guitar, and Dimitri offered to help the guy play better guitar. We all watched YouTube videos together and Dimitri pointed out his minor error to help him play better. I got another bottle of water from him and I had to leave because a couple came in to talk to him. He is indeed a nice man. Like I said to him: without expecting anything in return, your reward is in heaven. Will come back again for any needs of mails, passport, notary services or even birthday cards. The guy was sleazy - asked him for stamps for five letters and he then proceeded to weigh my envelopes (they only had holiday cards in them) and said the rate would be a dollar per envelope. When asked what time mail was handed over to the official post office, instead of responding with a clear answer, he began needling me about why I was dropping something off there late on a Saturday, if my package was so important, and then repeatedly interrupted virtually every single time I tried to respond. I'm not someone that usually writes reviews but I feel compelled to write this. I strongly advise not coming here. The owner is unprofessional and has quite a temper. One only needs to look at his responses to the negative reviews on Google Maps and Yelp to see how he treats people, especially calling the majority of one star reviews fake, attacking each author instead of calmly mediating the issues at hand. He was even yelling at a customer on the phone when I was there shouting profanities into the phone. Reading through some of the reviews, this seems to be a common occurrence. The store itself is quite a mess which contributes to extremely slow service. Pricing wise USPS, Fedex, and UPS all provide considerably cheaper rates. Went in to mail a few packages that were all the same rate. I'd previously sent the same type of package via USPS so I knew what I was going to be charged for postage. When I got the price from Postal Place, it was significantly higher than the USPS. I was willing to pay a surcharge, but the price was so high I felt I needed to understand what I was being charged. BTW, it was a work charge, so I was still willing to go with it. I asked whoever is minding the store a breakdown of the price, and explained to him I'd just mailed these and asked about the huge discrepancy. It's not like it was going overnight or any special handling. I was told by this man that I shouldn't be shopping on Montana Avenue, because I can't afford it. He also refused to give me a price for the postage, before his (obscene) mark up. I'm all for supporting small business, but this shop seriously doesn't belong on a street like Montana. It's not a neighborhood serving kind of operation. Regardless of whether or not I can afford to shop on Montana, what's the big deal about just answering a simple question? No reason to get nasty. He could have explained his price, and I could decide if I wanted to pay it. And move on. That's not what happened. Just mailed out a check worth a lot of money out via Dimitris. I paid $26 for it, which is probably higher than the Post Office, but I am ok with that due to the value of the check. He also gave me a tracking number and I took a picture of the package so I can ensure that it'll get there safely. Plus, it's a block away from my house. So to me, the convenience and peace of mind is worth the price. Not to mention, Dimitris is a great guy....The Greek God of Montana Ave! I told him I was going to Greece this summer and he gave me some great travel tips and suggestions. He's got stories for days and is hilarious. A conversation with him is also worth it. read more

My response to Dimitris reply - people need to see this: Calling me a "freeloader" is defamation of character. You weren't saying that about me when I happily paid you over $45 for 4 individual keys, that didn't even come with key rings a few months ago. Which also took, might I add, over 40 minutes to do. The up-charge is not convenient when it's taking that long, in my opinion. It should be convenient, in and out. 1. That's fine you were on a business call - you put your hand up with your pointer finger to signal me to wait and I smiled, nodded and looked at the cards, no problem. It was not "a minute", to be "factual". Also, there was NO ONE in the store when I came in there. It's on camera, the camera you threatened me with you made the accusation that I wasn't going to pay for the envelope. I never ever once implied that. The lady you speak of, came in after me and asked if I was waiting, and I said yes, he's been on the phone I'm waiting for him to get off. So you are already incorrect in you "facts". It's on camera. 2. When you asked me to write out the address with a thick sharpie, I was confused, but obliged. I figured you were going to type it in or something, but when I saw you put them on the package, I had concerns because I had repeatedly addressed concerns about the envelope being fully waterproof - I asked for a bag and you kept pushing this envelope on me, to the point where I was uncomfortable but I said ok because I actually really needed to go. I asked if you were going to put tape over the labels to protect it. You kept asking me how important from 1-10 the package was and I mentioned already it was very important for work, a 12 out of 10 actually were my words. The envelope you gave me was not waterproof - the outside is not - it's paper. Just because it's lined with bubble wrap inside doesn't mean it's waterproof. And the label with sharpie on it is also not waterproof. At no time did you tell me it was $4.00 - I wouldn't have paid for something that I didn't even want in the first place. You were very pushy. 3. I understand that there are different rates for mailing and shipping. I asked for options. You did not provide me that. You just kept saying $50 and I'll give you $10 off. I asked several times, and that's when I said ok I understand and I appreciate it but this is a bit high for me and UPS is probably a lot cheaper. That's when you went off telling me I owed you $4.00 for the envelope and how you are not a billion dollar company. Your behavior when I was asking simple questions as a customer was horrible. I was taken aback, honestly. It was very weird and bad business. And when I gave you $5.00, you made a face and literally grunted about having to give me $1.00 back in change. 4. The customer you speak of in the store - she never confronted me once, except to ask if I was already waiting when she first walked in. This is actually comical...were we in the same room?? After you printed her label she left! That's actually funny. 5. Insinuating that I came "looking for trouble", when I was coming to mail a package is slander. 6. To be clear, 120% markup is just not something I feel comfortable with. 7. It's amazing, now that I'm actually reading your reviews, that many people have the same issue with you, so while it's a different circumstance, it's the same experience. As I mentioned, I am an avid, local supporter of Montana, and never once have I encountered anyone like this in a professional environment. For those that don't know me, I'm a bubbly, happy, fun person who believes in empowering others and when energy like this comes my way, I want no part of it. I don't think you do either. PS - I'm happy to share the photo of the "waterproof" envelope soaking wet, as well as the receipt of my keys, as well as my receipt that the rate through UPS was under $20.00 - as I said, I'm happy to pay a surcharge for a local shop, but not 120% markup, especially with this attitude and business model. read more
