I always try to support local small businesses, especially when they are Southeast Asian-owned, however I'm giving it 2 out of 5 stars because of something I witnessed in the kitchen. While I was waiting for my food to be prepared, one of the employees (lady with her protein shake in hand - you know who you are) walked into the kitchen, picked up the small bowl of vermicelli noodles that was intended for my papaya salad, and used her unwashed hands to grab a few strands and eat them. She then left the remaining noodles in the bowl to be served. Seeing an employee handle a customer's food with unwashed hands and eat directly from the serving bowl was concerning and made me question the restaurant's food handling and hygiene practices. I hope the restaurant addresses this, because the food itself is very good. read more

What a incredible hidden gem! We forgot to grab some kimchi at the local grocery and googled some asian markets near by and came across pothong! They have such a nice selection of various products (veggies, noodles, proteins, sausage, snacks, sauces etc.) There is a little bit of everything. In addition they had a nice selection of premade food like eggrolls, banh mi sandwiches, salads, and noodles. The ladies here were also super friendly and had recommendations for items in store. If you have never been, would highly recommend checking them out. read more

This place has been going strong since i was young and has continue to grow in size. Its a convenient asian supermarket that has the necessities for the surrounding community. You also have locally sourced produce that can be found on many asian cuisines. The store is family owned so you see everyone from time to time and they are very helpful trying to find whay you need. The food is so good, made fresh to order especially the papaya salad and laab where im trying to build spice tolerance. Its a mom and pop shop and clean and always upgrading to improve customer service. Its a staple im glad to have in my old neighborhood. read more

I fell in love with Lao sausages and Nam Khao (crispy rice salad) that the local Buddhist Temple was selling as a fund raiser. I've been on the hunt for more since the fundraiser ended. I recently searched Yelp for Nam Khao and found a local market with a kitchen in the back. Pothong Market is only about two miles from my house. I placed my order over the phone and headed over to check out their produce and grocery items. I picked up some dried chilis while I was there and was tempted by a number of other options. The market closes at 6 and the kitchen closes at 5:30 (which is not noted on the website). I chatted with the chef/cook. I am so impressed. The Nam Khao was delicious! Came with plenty of fresh crisp romaine, mint and cilantro.I love the blend of soft, crunchy, salty, sour.... so hard to describe. I'm so glad to have a local source. The grilled sausages are well seasoned and plump. I'd like to figure out which frozen sausages they use so I can make these at home. My friend also ordered the papaya salad (thai style) with zero peppers and they were OK with that. I'll be sure to order that (with one pepper) my next visit. A little neighborhood Lao market to get Asian groceries and produce. I've been here three times and the owners/workers are nice and helpful. Store is busy every time I've gone. Last week my mom wanted me to make her some Filipino food so I rushed over here on my way home from work before they closed. Decent prices on produce and you must use them right away since they're ripe & ready to use. From reading the reviews, it looks like they sell spicy papaya salad so I'd like to try that sometime in the future. I really wanted to support this Asian store but every visit has been disappointing!!!! They don't care about anyone waiting in line. The owners and staff gossip nonstop and it's honestly uncomfortable, and unprofessional. They talk so much that the lines get long because they're not focused on helping customers. On top of that, everything is overpriced compared to other Asian markets. I'd rather support other Asian stores that treat customers with respect and keep things professional. read more

Been going to this place since I was a kid. They finally finished with the remodeling...A lot more modern looking from the outside and inside; they have mini splits! Their house made lao sausage are now being sold in store, thank god because I think lao sausages are so expensive when you buy them cooked. I recommend ordering your food online and have it pick up since it will take them quite a while to make them. This is my go to asian market to get papaya [vinai] and pho ingredients. I live in the Natomas area and I'm so sad. I'm far away from Asian stores. I looked up any Asian markets are around the area and found this one which I never been to. Literally walked in and it was heaven and I loved it. They had so many different snack, snacks, and foods to choose from. The only thing I would say is the produce section is super small and runs out fast, so there was barely anything for me to purchase. Would definitely be coming back to this location. read more

I love supporting small family businesses, especially during times like this. I've been going here at least once or twice a month to get my laos/Thai food fix. Yes from the outside it looks like a run down market in a horrible neighborhood, but they serve some delicious food. The food they have available here tastes better than some of the restaurants I've been to that serves the exact same menu. Customer service is what you expect at an Asian store, lack of communication but that's what I like sometimes. Their prices for food and products are reasonable; definitely not price gouging. I was craving for pad thai and instead of ordering take-out I wanted to take a stab at actually trying to make it at home. Checked this place out and it's pretty much a small neighborhood market that has a focus on thai goods. Granted, it was still a bit of a scavenger hunt to find all of the ingredients that I needed as the sections of items here aren't well organized. Pretty decent pricing of the things here overall; my total for the pad thai ingredients was a little over what I would've paid pad thai for at a restaurant. As for COVID regulation enforcement here.....ehhh. Social distancing wasn't really enforced (the customers here seemed to not really care about their surroundings at all as one customer was standing close to me at the cashier line and was coughing and another customer was blasting their own music at the store) and the cashier lady wasn't wearing her mask properly. If you need certain Thai ingredients, this place most likely has the things you're looking for. Otherwise, if you just need to stock up on general Asian grocery goods, you're better off shopping at a big-box store. read more

I appreciate their hot food section. It's, typically, stocked with at least half of the items available. Their Thai fried bananas are addicting and on point! I also enjoy their mung bean rice seasame rolls. I truly appreciate the non-red bean flavors that the Chinese markets typically use. I do prefer the mung bean more. Their fried fish and sticky rice is also on point. Their hot food section reminds me of my childhood and upbringing. Too bad I don't know how to cook these food items. They also have a limited fresh veggie and fresh fruit section. They have a lot of the more Thai and Lao ingredients which I love. This was my first and definitely my last time here. I came in before closing and tried to order a papaya salad, but they refused to make it. A lady from the back asked, "Who wants to order?" and when the girl at the front said, "Just one girl," the lady responded, "No then." That made no sense to me--why refuse to make a salad that takes two minutes, especially when the place is still open? It felt like they only wanted to serve certain people. The owner says the kitchen closes at 5:30 but it doesn't show on any platform that the kitchen closes at a different time than the store, and why ask me to ask the kitchen if they can make it if they are closed? And why is the lady in the kitchen ask who wants to buy? Seems like they're just being biased and just make things up. To top it off, the location is in a really sketchy area that looks run-down and unsafe, like you could get robbed or worse. Not worth it. read more

Green plums lead me to this side of town. I was in the neighborhood to buy some from a lady who was selling them from her home. On my way to her house, I saw this market and made it a point to stop in. I was immediately intrigued as I saw a lady in the parking lot selling rooted veggies for planting. Upon entering, I was a bit leery as workers and clientele gave me a look? Not sure the reasoning but went with my curiosity. The workers there asked right away if I needed help and told him I'm just looking. As I perused through the aisles, I found a lot of staples for what my Thai friend uses for her dishes. The fruits and veggies here are very cheap and you can't get any fresher unless you grew them yourself. As I found out, the green plums I bought from the lady down the street were sold here. At almost half the cost! Anyway, I bought some herbs, veggies, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf and papaya salad to-go. The papaya salad was good with a good amount of heat. Glad I was cautious and ordered it with two peppers. They have a sort of diner in the back of the store and you order hot and cold food and dine in or takeout. read more

I heard good things on Yelp about the Lao food at this family owned Asian market in Natomas, so when I was in the area on a Sunday morning, I made time to swing by. I was surprised to see a line outside the store already, but I'm glad they want people to be able to physically distance and reduce capacity since the store space isn't huge. It didn't take long before I was inside and shopping. A produce delivery was happening at the same time, so I got to see fresh Asian veggies being added to the displays. At $1.25 for most bunches, I couldn't resist grabbing some nice zucchini leaves with a few blossoms mixed in. An edible bouquet is my kind of bouquet. :) Being a smaller store, I think their grocery prices are slightly higher than a large Asian chain like SF Supermarket but that's to be expected. I also ordered some nam kao (crispy rice salad) from the unmarked counter in the back near the kitchen. The made to order takeout menu isn't up on the wall so you kind of have to know they make hot food. They also have a limited amount of hot food already made and set up front with the pre packaged dessert and other fresh food. I wish the nam kao was crispier but it probably got soggy while I drove home. I also wish there was more meat, and fewer peanuts. But the flavor was spot on, and they were very generous with their greens. I also grabbed a steamed tapioca cake for dessert. At $4 a container for something that was a little too over steamed, I'll probably pass on this next time. But I would be open to trying more of the hot food menu items and other fresh veggies. read more

Review #085 - 2020 Every time I go out with one of older brothers, we're more than likely to grab Lao food because that's their staple meal. I don't mind it, especially since I don't eat Lao food as often as they do. We showed up at around 4:30 PM on Friday, May 8th. I decided to sit in the car and wait with the kids while my brother went inside to place our orders. The food probably took about half an hour to be ready so I decided to go inside & empty my bladder because I wasn't sure if we would find a bathroom any time before we got home. We got an order of the bitter style beef larb, which actually didn't look very tasty, but I was taken by surprise at how tasty it was. Sadly, I didn't get a picture since the only picture I took was super blurry. The papaya salad was also good, even though it looked kind of boring compared to what we can normally get elsewhere. The Lao sausages were tasty, but pretty much burnt to a crisp. Luckily, my younger sister saw my post on Facebook & it made her crave Lao food so she drove out there the very next day & ordered almost everything that we ordered. The lady who owned the place gave her a replacement order of the sausages after my sister showed her a picture of our order. I didn't really enjoy the pork ribs or the chicken legs because it was too plain & dry for my liking, but my brother & the kids enjoyed them. I bought a pre-made container of pickled cabbage, which I really liked so I told my sister to grab me two more while she was there so she got one for herself as well. Overall, the food was good, and the fact that the owner was willing to fix their mistake made it a better experience. We'll definitely be back! read more

This is the closest southeast Asian grocery store near me. I live in rocklin and sometimes out of the blue I will have these intense cravings for a lao dish called kao piek sen. I was craving it so bad one late afternoon and the store closes at 6. I called them and asked if they had any freshly made kao piek noodles and they did. I had 20 mins to get there during rush hour. The lady who answered the phone said she'd wait for me and if the steel gates were down to just knock and she'd let me in. I made it in the Knick of time.
