He was able to do just enough to make the hat fit perfectly for my dad, who hasn't been able to wear it for about five years. That small adjustment meant a lot, and I'm so grateful he took the time to help. My only recommendation would be to allow customers the option to take the risk on adjustments they're willing to try before turning them away. I completely understand the hesitation from the first employee, but sometimes it's not just about what you say, it's how you say it.
