Vintage Books has been a haunt of mine for decades. As a teenager three decades ago, I used to…read morefrequently buy and sell fantasy, sci-fi and RPG books, cycling through new D&D campaign material as needed. Prices were always excellent, the selection surprisingly robust, and the staff friendly and helpful, if a bit timid. Happily, not much has changed in the last thirty years, and this is one of the few instances where I would say that is absolutely a good thing. In the age of Amazon, eReaders, audiobooks, and every other conceivable method of circumventing the written (and more importantly, *printed*) word, it's almost shocking that little backend bookstores like this are able to survive...but I am thankful that they have.

Luckily, Portland has a wonderful reading community that operates Rose City Reads. I actually found out about this location from a volunteer at the store in the Main library. Located in a strip mall, this location is out in the northeast, an area with few bookstores. Each time I've ventured in, there are plenty of other patrons roaming the stacks. And because this location is run by caring volunteers, it's always well organized with clearly labeled shelves. About half of the books are library discards, while the rest are community donations. And most everything is less than $5, so there are plenty of deals to be had.

After checking in our luggage at the SouthWest Counter, this bright & colorful shop caught my eyes, located near the bathrooms and next to TSA. I loved looking at all the products and what they have to offer. I also had to rush as my other half mentioned that the lines are getting long at TSA, Note to self, allow more time for browsing and shopping when at PDX airport. What I loved about PiPH, - everything! Really fun spot even to look around, it really put a smile on my face, seeing some of the items made me want to be a kid again, esp. the pens and stickers ( Care Bears & Strawberry Shortcake theme) I love the inspirational books and the card sections, some of the cards are funny and true. The items are kind of on the pricey side but think of it this way, will you find the product your are looking for elsewhere, Only at PDX. hehe. The pricing is pretty reasonable, not as great as some used book stores I've been to, but I understand you gotta pay that overhead! Clean, organized, a small sitting area, coffee and hot chocolate for sale.....this is a great way to spend an afternoon!! The books are very reasonably priced, and you can see she takes care what she brings in....I saw no books that were damaged or overly worn. Lastly, if you bring in books to donate the store, she offers a discount on whatever you purchase that day! A nice win-win!

In the meantime, they're keeping me up to date with the series and each time I go to pick up my book, I find at least one other fascinating read to take home--and they give me credit when I bring books back. What's strange, is that most of the space used to house my favorite thrift store, run by The Cat Adoption Team...but I digress. I had the incredible opportunity to talk with the shop's owner, Lori. She is a major book lover, is extremely knowledgeable and has the best organization system for her inventory. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she has areas within the store for us. I love knowing where I can find an array of queer books by genre, including a small selection of new books. Vast majority of the inventory is used and the prices are extremely reasonable. I can see why customers are loyal to this store. I was so impressed, I bought a few books and also signed onto be a monthly member. This helps ensure that we keep these unique small businesses in business. I'm putting my money where my mouth is and supporting them. It's a trek for me but it's my new book home and I highly recommend them. Friendly staff, easy parking and very reasonable prices! If you love books, you will love this place!

Note though that a lot of sections are labeled romance but aren't actually romance books. Definitely a hidden gem for all book lovers!
