Took an Uber there, it was daytime but im pretty sure night times around that place are a bit...seedy. However, this bakery is rad. We went for the burnt almond torte. No frill's joint. Staff was very friendly, felt like they support the neighborhood. The flavored breads (raisin, lemon, etc) are a really good deal. Some of the stuff in the case can be boring. They make amazing raspberry jam cookies. This place invented the Burnt Almond Torte, and is a Pittsburgh institution that needs love and support. Don't let another one slip away, Pittsburgh! Prantl's Bakery was established in 1966 by the Austrian immigrant Henry Prantl. According to the bakery's website, in 2007 Henry retired and sold the business. Today, Prantl's Bakery remains an iconic institution in Pittsburgh, and it maintains several locations in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The bakery is most known for its Burnt Almond Torte, a cake that contains custard filling, buttercream icing, and toasted almonds, but the bakery also offers over 100 types of other baked goods. This particular location is in the North Side neighborhood. For my visit, I found metered parking on the street. As soon as I entered the bakery, a friendly employee greeted me. I told her that I needed some time to decide what I wanted, so she patiently gave me time. In the display cases and on the tables, I saw baked goods such as cookies (e.g., chocolate chip, salted caramel, M&M, macadamia, Reese's peanut butter, peanut butter, sugar, jimmie sprinkles, and red velvet), scones, bear claws, muffins (e.g., bran, blueberry, and chocolate chip), croissants (e.g., chocolate and almond), rolls, brownies, donuts, cakes, cupcakes, etcetera. The employee did an excellent job of packing my baked goods into a box, ringing them up in the cash register, and wishing me a great day. Please note that this bakery does charge a service fee of 3.5%, whether you pay with cash or a credit card. A couple of tables and chairs were available, but I ate my treats at home. Here are my reviews for my foods: Apricot rolls - 3 stars - One dozen apricot rolls (i.e., kolachi, kolacky, kolaczki cookies, etcetera) cost $12.99. These rolls were small so looked more like cookies. They contained a decent amount of apricot, but I recommend that the rolls be baked a little longer so they are crispier. The dough was very soft so was smashed and not pretty. Butter croissant - 5 stars - This croissant cost $2.79. It was a large size, was fresh, and tasted good. Oatmeal raisin cookie - 5 stars - This cookie cost $2.99. It was wide and thick, and it was very flavorful with its oats and raisins. Lady lock - 4.5 stars - This lady lock cost $1.99. The dough was flaky, and the filling tasted sweet. I appreciated that the containers were made from cardboard and type-1 plastic, so I could recycle them in my community. read more

I've lived in Pittsburgh nearly 5 years now and finally went to Prantl's! I went to the Northside location on a Saturday morning. I had plans later in the day so I am really sad that I didn't get to try one of the famous thumbprint cookies -- the whipped icing needs to stay refrigerated. I got some cookies for my husband and I and we both loved them. They had so many donuts, pastries, pies and cakes to choose from -- and the thumbprint cookies rotate seasonally too! read more

We ordered a few other items like a cookie and pepperoni roll, they were fine. And I thought the prices were reasonable. I live about 3 hours away and I'd drive back just for that torte. I've been shopping Prantls for 30yrs. It used to be such a treat to go there. The staff has changed the atmosphere has changed drastically. The manager had a name tag on letting you know he was the boss. He was not very personable and acted like he was too busy to wait on me but hurry up l'll take your money. Smh. The cake I bought there was decorated there and the icing was smeared. So much for presentation. Seem like the mgr would have checked the cake before giving it to me. The young lady that decorated the cake was so nice I didn't make a fuss about it. I should have listened to some of the reviews. Lesson learned. Now I'm afraid to cut the cake. If the taste is as poor as the service. Won't be going back there. So disappointed. The mgr should know how to run a business. Not my job to tell him how to improve his business. read more

I stopped by this Prantl's location on a Saturday morning after a quick stop at Government Center Record store. I was pleasantly surprised by the clean and welcoming atmosphere! Staff was very friendly. They had a nice assortment of baked goods. I had to get a piece of their famous almond torte which was delicious as usual. I also tried the carrot cake cupcake which blew me away! Carrot cake is one of my favorite desserts and this little portion was just enough. Check this location out! read more

I was in the mood for some pastry and was near Prantl's. The selection was ok nothing great. The staff behind the counter one was very nice and friendly and knowledgable and the other was not intrested in g=helpo=ing did not know there product and seemed more interested in there phone. I got 2 almond chocolate croissants. I have to say I was disappointed as the croissants seemed old they where not that fresh and where a little on the hard side also as a chocolate croissant I really had to look for the chocolate part as there was almost none in there.????? As the croissants where not good and the customer support could of been a lot better. I would of given them 3 stars if the service had been better and the croissants where not hard. I have no choice but to leave 2 stars which is generous. I will not be back to this location again. There are other Prantl's locations I think I will give one of them a try. read more

Went to Prantl's Bakery in North Side near where we used to live for a year or 2 in Pittsburgh. They have 3 locations and are known for their Brunt Almond Torte. Don't ask me what it is but I tried the bite size one and it was good. Got an 8x8 Toasted Almond Torte for work Monday and you have to refrigerate it (came prepared with a cooler and ice packs). Also picked up 2 local soda pops. Root beer and Cola. They got some will soda flavors. Staff was very friendly and accommodating my tourist self. Actually I visited the bakery in Shadyside on Walnut street across from the Apple store. This is a truly exceptional bakery that I have been hearing about since I moved to Pittsburgh in 2002. The selections of savory and sweet offers you a very wide assortment. Get in before they close, The manager/owner is a very nice man who is a great communicator and we conversed extensively about just about every topic which came up. We share many interests. I had stepped to wait until 9:00 am for my PNCBANK branch to open at 9 am. Good choice. A great warm broccoli cheese quiche was purchased; I decided to wait later in the morning for a pastry at the Coffee Tree Roasters across the Street! A wonderful treat and time. One of my main gripes is the 3.5% service charge, not a cc service charge just a tacked on fee for cash or credit. At this point just roll it into your prices. I ordered my husbands birthday cake for his 65 birthday. Went in to pick it up and they never made it. They said they had a question and tried to call me which was a lie. I showed the employee my phone log a d she agreed it wasn't showing where they called me. I will never buy again. Other times I have bought cookies and bread and it wasn't that great, tasted old. My review is colored by the fact that I JUST picked up some amazing baked goods from Pastries à la Carte. The baked goods at Prantl's look very unappealing. They don't offer tea. How hard is it to have hot water and teabags?! In addition, what bakery in Pittsburgh DOESN'T have paczki?! The young man working was very awkward. Prantl's review I have never been to one of the actual bakery's but am fully aware of the legendary burnt almond torte so we had to stop in (Squirrel Hill) and grab a bite. We were immediately greeted by the loveliest of ladies and stayed and heard a little history of the company. They were all just so sweet and friendly we probably stayed too long. Lol These days you don't find this kind of friendliness and genuine hospitality anymore. Thank you so much ladies! I am not a big reviewer, so unless it's exceptional or horrible, I'll live and let live. I'm leaving 2 stars for the nice people working there but the pastries & goods were incredibly sub-par and zero star-worthy. We purchased an Apricot & Almond pastry which was undeniably stale and nearly flavorless and a $5.50 Blueberry scone that had to be the absolute worst "scone" ever made. It was like eating a dry chunk of bread with a hint of sour blueberry. Absolutely overpriced for barely edible goods (both items were tossed after a multi-person tasting...all in agreement that they were pretty bad). I feel bad leaving this review but it really was THAT bad and folks should be wary. I hear that their almond torte is good? Ooof, I miss Priory. read more
