My wife and I had a GREAT experience with Precious Pets Almost Home. We adopted two kittens from Precious Pets last year and recently adopted a third cat. Precious Pets is an all-volunteer rescue group. We are grateful to all the dedicated and committed volunteers who took care of our cats leading up to their adoptions. Our three young cats bonded quickly and it is truly a pleasure and privilege to provide them with a loving home. The volunteers do everything possible to provide high quality care to the cats and match them with the best permanent home. I am not usually the squeaky wheel,but My husband and I applied for a kitten about a month ago and I followed up the next day with a call to the shelter to make sure they received the application and additional phone numbers to reach me. We didn't hear back and assumed she had been adopted. I went back in on Sunday to see her still there, I was shocked. Then I read the Yelp reviews. I decided not to try and contact the shelter again and went to Petsmart. If three of us have yelped about this, then I can only imagine how many appropriate homes have applied and been ignored. I am aa huge fan of rescues. This is a terrible rescue it's a shame Not sure if pets mart is aware of how this lady runs this one, because it goes against all pet-smart's mission for pets. This review is unbelievable but 100% factual and will make you cringe. The founder of this rescue 'Ro' the lady that gets the applications shouldn't be dealing with people in general; she is abrasive and actually doing more harm than good for these cats. The volunteer that showed me the cat was wonderful I sat in the room played w the cat and chatted with her for over an hour - it was excellent!! If it wasn't for her sharing her contact info I would have been at "RO's" mercy and not been able to gain the info, Insights that I was able to learn and share in this review. The founder of this rescue her name is 'Rose' "RO". Expectations/requirements for adopters; you must take your past/current and future cats to the vet every six months for full exam and blood work up. If not, you just won't get a response about ur application ( see other reviews mentioning 'RO' never contacts people back on decisions. When she does call people back she blocks- restricts her number so your not able to follow up on your application ( she is the founder) and doesn't try to be nice or polite- in fact one of her volunteers told me ' yeah she turns people off and doesn't do well with people'. And I can confirm that. After a few weeks she called me about my application , but had not called my vets, landlord, references... etc. the conversation consisted of her telling me 'how busy she was for the first 10 mins , then told me "I sounded like a terrible cat owner cuz I don't bring my cats to vet every 6 months for blood work ...exams- that is direct quote from her mouth. I told her that "no I don't do that...I think it's a waste of money it's not necessary it's more Trumatic for the cat to go and get that done so often. She asked me to call my vet(s)and fax my 4 cats files from the past 15 years to her because she was too busy , and didn't want me to have them attached in an email cuz then she would have to print them herself and it would cost her too much money... my first thought was ' does she really need a hard copy directly from the vet on absolutely everything for 4 cats that are over 15 years of files? . But I did what she asked me to do.. called my vets and got ahold of anti cruelty for clinic paperwork and faxed it all to her.. I understand it's Non profit and they are only getting $100 per cat but seriously ....Clearly if I have had 4 that cats from birth to senior and they go to the vet and love them like my children and willing to pay $100 for a ADULT cat to rescue ( how many adult cats out there need a good forever home ?) you would kinda get the impression "I might be a good home for this cat?" ..it's a shame of those cute little cats sit in those cages for months at a time before she decides to respond to applicants.. or even turn them down. YES I was denied....by 'RO' by email ( once again from a ghost email account) and was told I wouldn't be a good cat owner because I didn't take my cats to the vet's every six months nor probably would w a rescue. She is just one of those control freaks that must have her hand in everything , and who are the ones 'loosing out' the thousands of cats out there that need good loving forever homes...and that's what bothers me the most. read more

I am wondering if they really care about their animals. Poor cats are sitting in the cages in a pet store while there are so many people interested in adopting them. Precious Pets Almost Home does not answer any phone calls. My husband and I were both volunteers at Paws. We are good people who really want to give a loving home to a cat...but the shelter would not return our calls. Do you really care about your animals???? read more

Don't even bother with these people. The volunteers here are the worst. It took over a week for them to contact me, and when they did, the volunteer I spoke with told me that all three of the cats I was considering were already adopted. Ok, so why don't they update their website??? I had my heart set on one cat in particular, and she was at Petsmart for two weeks, sitting in the cage. That doesn't look adopted to me, but I digress. The volunteer called me from a private number. They are not reachable at all. I let a voicemail about a week ago, and finally got a call today. No one at Petsmart knows when exactly they're around, when I can actually meet the cat (outside the cage!), or any info about how I can contact them. I've emailed, called; I got an email back about volunteering, which I also applied for, which I responded to, but received no response after that. Their communication is very poor. Very frustrated with these people. I feel bad for the cats under their care who could be adopted but aren't because of their horrible customer service. The volunteer I spoke to was extremely rude and expected me to pick another cat on the spot. Overall really dissatisfied with "Precious" Pets Almost Home and wouldn't want to ever deal with them in the future. I suppose the only good reviews on here are people who got lucky and somehow managed to adopt a cat. I thought I would be lucky, too, but that was not the case. Steer clear of these people. Even if you fall in love with a cat. It's probably already adopted and they've just failed to update their website or PetFinder. read more

We adopted our two angels (Scarlett and Cami) from Prescious Pets at PetSmart on Elston almost 2 years ago. It was a very easy process. The kitties and their cages are well-kept. I often visit the kitties there and give them lots of attention. read more

I love PPAH! I started fostering kittens for them in April. I was able to foster and bottle feed 2 different litters--7 kittens in total. I had many dealings with Ro and she was responsive, smart, funny, and nice. I met with Ro MANY times over the course of fostering PPAH kittens and it is obvious that she truly cares about, and loves cats. Debbie and Kari are also amazing at what they do. Their adoption fee is truly a bargain given that the cats come fully vetted and with all necessary immunizations already done! I have had the pleasure to meet other PPAH foster families and they all put so much time, care, and attention into these cats. If you adopt a cat from PPAH you will know exactly what kind of cat you are getting. Ro and other PPAH volunteers are also great mentors when it comes to cat care. I ended up adopting some of my foster babies and I couldn't be happier. I know that if I ever need them--for advice, nail trims--or whatever--PPAH will be there for us. I was nervous after reading the reviews here but I'm very happy with my experience. They are run by only a few volunteers so don't be afraid to follow up if you don't hear back right away as they are very busy. I fell in love with a cat last week and I was so happy to be able to bring her home today! I am a first time pet owner, and Aurora was really great making sure I had everything I needed to be ready to adopt my first cat. I love my new cat, she's everything I wanted! read more

I would give them 0 stars if I could. My husband and I went to Petsmart a couple of Sats. ago. We were looking for a kitten and there was supposed to be a rep there. We looked at the cats and found a nice, playful smart kitten that would probably get along with out 17 y/o cat who thinks he's 2. We finally tracked down an employee who was very nice, but couldn't really help up other than filling out an application. Fine, we filled it out. There is a tiny print disclaimer at the bottom of the signature page that says that they MAY do this and that. NONE of their policies are anywhere online or we wouldn't have gone with them. They wanted a 17 y/o cat's vet records. He's been to many bets. They either don't keep records very long or they don't keep good records. They checked the last vet we used. We adopted two kittens from there. They were spayed and neutered there.m all three were declawed there, but the vet had no record of anything. They wanted to establish a line of preventive care, also not in their policies until after the fact. It's hard to do with a 17 y/o cat, so. Packed the poor thing into the carrier. He hates the carrier, he hates going outside, he hates raking a ride in anything, he hates the vet and most of all, he hates dogs. $211 later I find out what I already knew. He's perfectly healthy. A vet once asked us after the fifth or sixth year we vaccinated them why we kept coming back. If they're indoor cats and don't go outside or aren't exposed to other cats there was really no need to vaccinate. Anyway, my point is that they will invent some draconian rule and call it a policy AFTER you sign the application. These policies are found no where! I understand they want to place the animal in a good home, but it's a cat, not a child. Their policies seem to mean more to them than an animal in a cage. They are why people buy pets. No yourself a favor and skip them. read more

Precious Pets cares so much about the animals in their care. I started working with them as a foster when I saw two litters of kittens on Chicago Animal Care and Control's Facebook page who were listed as urgent and had no rescues interested. PP helped me pulled them and Aurora, their medical person, has been so attentive to me as a first-time foster, helping me figure out every need they have and providing them with great vet care (any time I felt worried about them being sick she sent me straight to the vet to check on them). The group is small and under-funded but they do everything they can to help animals and it is smart to adopt from them! read more

Seven years ago my son (then 4) and I adopted a wonderful cat who was in the shelter for quite some time. Apparently not wanted due to her age, around 3 years old. She had medical problems that were taken care of by Precious Pets Almost Home, but still she was waiting to be placed for about 6 months. Adopting this cat was the best decision I could have ever made. She is doing very well and to this day my son is obsessed with her. PPAH is a first rate shelter that makes adopting easy while ensuring that the animals go to the right home. read more

I adopted one cat from Precious Pets and he was fine. He has respiratory problems that will follow him for the rest of his life due to surviving a fire but he is well otherwise. I also adopted a cat, Loki that appeared well due to her disposition but was actually very, very sick. She has such a severe ear infection that the my vet was unable to see her eardrum. Then she was staining to urinate, there were drops of blood, she was diagnosed with having crystals in her urine to the point that she may develop a kidney stone. This all started one week after I adopted her. When I contacted Precious Pets and the woman that handled Loki's adoption, she tried to be helpful and had the woman that fostered Loki call me. Well at this time, this person that also works or volunteers for Precious Pets tried telling me that she was only sick in my care not theirs and that they were not responsible and started to argue and talk over me when I told her of my anger in regards to their care of this pet. Any cat owner knows that an ear infection and bladder condition of this magnitude would not happen in a week to a week and a half time frame. I would suggest that any animal that is adopted from this place be checked days before being released for adoption. read more

For a few months now, my family and I were waiting and looking for the perfect cat to come along to join our family. We had lost our kitty of 20 years last summer 2016 and it took awhile for our family to be ready again. You see, I had my kitty since he was 8 weeks old and he was family so it was a difficult time for our family. We finally found the perfect kitten here.. I applied and emailed. No response. I called and "voicemail is full" and could not even leave a message. Emailed again. I got a very generic email indicating my application was not approved. I'm in total disbelief and the email was clearly generic with no reason. We are a loving family and no reason why we wouldn't be able to bring a kitten into our family and provide him with the best quality of care and life. Not to mention, someone is ALWAYS home. All was clearly explained in my application. I was not interested in the adopting the 2 cat policy. I understand the pros behind it, but this foundation needs to understand not al families all the same and some families do very well with 1 cat. I had one cat who had the best life for 20 years! This foundation did not give me a reason nor do they even seem willing to reach out to me to better explain their decision or even consider that our family may do exceptionally well with one kitten. It's too bad that this place does not throughly review applicants nor "interview" candidates before making a decision. If they interviewed me and then made a decision or simply gave me a valid reason, I would respect them and their decision. In this case, I have no respect for them. Shame on them for how they treat their applicants. We are finally ready to adopt and this was a huge blow to our family. read more

My experience with Precious Pets Almost Home was fantastic. I came into the petsmart during the adoption fair weekend and fell in love with a 3 month old kitten named Eve. I applied to adopt her that day and got to take her home by the next weekend. The adoption process was thorough and ensured that my new kitten went to a safe and loving home. I was extremely impressed by this. My kitten came to me spayed, vaccinated, and with medication that she needed free of charge. I have two cats already and the agency made sure to get both cats medical records to make sure they were healthy to be around Eve. (I renamed her Annie once I took her home). I was so happy to be able to think that every single cat going through this agency is 100% going home forever to somewhere they will be safe and healthy and loved. I'm absolutely in love with my new kitten and have never had a happier experiencing adopting. read more

I hate to put bad review about this place it is overly picky about who they choose to adopt there pets. I wanted a particular cat so i filled out adoption app waited two weeks after continuous emailing got a response saying that the adoption counselor would check my reference info so a couple days went by and no calls I received an email again finally got a call for an over the phone interview the adoption counselor was asking me question about my experience and home and i was happy thinking i was about to welcome this cat to my home. however at the end of the call she informed me that i was an unsuitable family for the cat (erin) because we did not have multiple cats. even though for most of my life(16+ years) i raised my own cat until her transition we were her family and wanted to share our home yet again. this is very unsettling for any prospective adopter because we are given false hope and then shut down. just because apparently we don't have 50 cats as there foster home may have. come on this was a horrible excuse. talk about better luck next time. ugh think about the mouths to feed in a multiple cats exactly the reason why these cats return to the system because of ridiculous profiling like these. volunteer work my BUTT. read more

We(husband and I) were denied adoption because according to their standards we were two visits short of providing proper veterinary care for our former cat who passed away from renal failure two years ago. That's it- we proved address, consent of landlord for pets, employment, personal references and proof we did take our cat to the vet(two vets) but because of her age(older cat) they felt we didnt take our cat ENOUGH. Giving two stars because we agreed with their mission to save cats- but that's it. The long wait that is mentioned wasnt a problem to us- they said it may take up to two weeks so we were fine with that. Curious incident though- we began the application process and spoke to one of their counselors- Aurora- via phone. While awaiting word on how our application was going- I stopped into Petsmart on Elston one day to say hello to the cats/see how they were doing. A misinformed man told me it was open adoption day and told a woman who was speaking to someone else that I had already applied for a cat. She turned around and just stared at me a moment or two and so I identified myself first- as she had never seen me in person- and asked if she was Aurora. She then started speaking and said she would be able to speak to me within a half hour(she had left a voicemail for me a few days ago wanting to update) but I could tell she was busy and just let her know Id be available to take her call anytime later that day. Two days later I get a call from her telling us (after further questioning) that we were denied and the reason why. She questioned the doctor's instructions on our pet's care concerning renal failure and truth be told, I didnt have a transcript of all vet conversations- considering it was 7-8 years ago. I remembered to the best of my ability, but knew- as she did- renal failure is fatal. This incident is curious as I'm a black woman who as experienced what some will call "the look" at job interviews, parties, new restaurants, etc when people were not expecting a person of color to arrive.(yes- even in this day and age) At first I thought that was the reason for denial after her initial expression when Aurora saw me- but logically, she COULD have just been trying to remember where/who I was and didnt have a good poker face. I suspected the racial explanation because I just couldnt believe they would reject on a basis so petty- that they made up the two-visit thing. I offered via email that I could send veterinary bills to them after adoption to prove we were taking the cat(s) to the vet according to their standards- every year for as long as they determined- no answer. It seems by their standards if you do something once- you will do it again and again for the rest of your life, even if you receive the right information and agree to change. Im sure they must have a contract to sign- I/we would have signed to taking our cats to the vet by their standards.. Looking at some of the reasons for denial by them and other organizations- there are many other petty reasons for more than suitable people to provide homes for these cats. Based on all the information we gave- we were suitable. Based on the information we gave we(and many others) were not going to take a cat home, kill it or make them live in a hoarding situation. These things ,though horrible, are very very rare. Lastly perhaps they simply dont have the man-power as a volunteer organization to consider adoption as I suggested- if a person doesnt quite measure up- but is like 80% or so "there", to let them adopt/sign under stricter guidelines- even adding larger fee if need be. (I belong to a non-profit so I know tracking and this type of thing can be difficult, but no answer was given by them) read more
