I just took my daughter here. Her old stylist moved across town and we decided to give this place a try. I'm sorry I did. The stylist Ella did such a terrible job in doing a simple layer. It came out so choppy and terrible. You're better going to super cuts and save your $. Kate the other stylist tried to help and blend it in but unfortunately, a bad cut like this hard to fix. $49 with $5 off on yelp check in. $8 tip, waste of $. Picture says it all. read more

This is my first ever yelp review. Our experience was that bad. To start, the stylist was 25 minutes late, and didn't even bother to greet us, other than a brief "I'll be right there with you" from 20 yards away. There was no receptionist, so we were just left there hanging out in the reception area with no service at all with an antsy toddler literally climbing up the walls. At no point did someone walk to us and say sorry, this is taking some time, we haven't forgotten you. Anything, really, would have gone a long way. Oh, and they had a policy that if you come more than 10min late you lose your appointment, the irony. When the stylist finally came to say hi and the obligatory sorry, she didn't even greet our son or make eye contact. This place is specialized in kids haircuts and yet the stylist was completely inept at dealing with small children. She didn't interact with him, and even remotely attempted to put him at ease. He was very quiet and sweet at first, but as it went on and this grown up didn't even acknowledge him while she proceeded to cut his hair, he suddenly flipped and got scared to the point of shaking. The stylist seemed annoyed at this and literally said I'm going to do something else, just call me when you're done with this. It took a few minutes to calm him down and after this he was very weary of her, so I had to hold him the entire time. At that point she asked if we wanted to proceed with the haircut. Seriously?! We chose this place because they specialize in kids and thought they'd know how to deal with them in a cheerful and comforting way. We had the extreme opposite experience, waaay worse than we had at the $20 neighborhood barber. To add insult to injury, when we finished the cut she said "you guys paid for the haircut online, how would you like to handle gratuity?" Basically forced us to give her 5 dollars. On what shouldn't be a side note to a hair salon, the haircut did turn out pretty cute and the ambiance is nice. If they got their act together this place would be pretty cool. We're never going back, that's for sure. read more

I had a great first-time experience with PREP. I found them through YELP when searching for a place for my 2-year-old son to get his first haircut. I wanted to find a place that would be comforting for a nervous toddler for their first haircut and also be able to clean up his wild curly hair, while still preserving some curls. I noticed most reviews suggested Lyn or Kate to cut toddler's hair but I wanted to call the salon to see who they recommended. I actually ended up speaking to Lyn who gave me a lot of great tips to prepare my son for his first haircut (watch Elmo or Daniel Tiger episodes about cutting their hair, come visit the salon beforehand, etc.) She also recommended booking a longer duration appointment to ensure we would have enough time and said we would still be charged for the junior cut amount. I booked an appointment with Lyn very easily through PREP's website. I took my son by the salon a few days before his appointment so he could see what the experience would be like. Lyn welcomed us in and we were able to see the salon so he could be comfortable. The day of our appointment, my son was nervous about his first haircut but I was able to sit right next to him and comfort him. Lyn not only did an excellent job with his haircut but she did it very quickly and was patient with him when he got scared and wanted it to be over. She even put on his favorite tv show on her personal cell phone to make him feel more comfortable. The salon was clean, well ventilated and other customers were distanced and masked. I am very pleased with our experience and will be returning for more toddler haircuts in the future! read more

Best place for toddler (2 years plus) haircut. They have a great lounge, and waiting area. Managers and staff goes out of their way to make you and kids comfortable. We have been there twice for our girls haircut, and it's been outstanding. They give free popcorns to your little one, which helps in comforting and distractions. iPads are provided to entertain the kids. We try and get there early so our baby gets sometime to settle in and watch other kids getting their haircut. Love their ambience and overall service! Brought my 3.5 year old daughter for her first haircut with Daisy. They did a shampoo, cut and blowdry quickly in 20 minutes or so, and had an iPad to help keep my daughter busy during the haircut. She was nervous, but Daisy was friendly, quick and efficient. And - there was popcorn as a post-haircut treat! read more

This salon"'s rating surprises me. It's worse than a supercut and they honestly need to get to their act together. The stylists are highly inconsistent. I came in a few weeks ago for my son's haircut and specifically said not to make it short and he did the opposite. He made it super shot and uneven all over as if he was doing us a favor. I do have high expectations from this salon given what they boast about in the valley about their haircuts for kids. We felt rushed in and out and it was the worst experience for us. To top it up I emailed their customer service regarding this issue and I received a reply that said "sorry about your experience and when can you come in again'. Prep is such a modern/cute salon. Their set up is different from most salons i've been to. They also have nice art around the facility that you can look at while you're getting your hair done! Overall, a clean and comfy environment. Anyway, I've been meaning to find a solid hair stylist for a while now and I think I've found her here at Prep! Mandy is incredibly talented-- she listens to exactly what you ask for and goes from there. She toned, trimmed, and layered my hair to perfection. Mandy is also quite funny and easy to talk to! I will admit that my first experience at Prep was similar to other reviewers in that it wasn't the warmest introduction. However, over time it has become a favorite stop for the kids and I. I did a ton of research on kid haircuts before my older son's first cut. Simply put, there isn't another place in the city (or East Bay, which is where we live now) that gives the kind of quality cut that we get here (we will come into the city and make a day of it, usually hit the playground on Clay which is just a few blocks away.) KATE is absolutely the best. She has an incredible sense of attention to detail, which frankly, is really all I care about. My older son's haircuts are always perfect, no matter the style (I always go in with pictures). My son is completely happy to go see Kate. He loves the iPad and popcorn as well. Highly recommend Kate if you are anal like me and want perfection. read more

Really fantastic kid haircuts. I have been putting off my son's first salon haircut forever because I was afraid of someone butchering his locks. My friend's son got his first cut at another kid-focused salon in town and it looked like someone took a weed wacker to his head. I get that toddlers don't like to sit still but if you couldn't see that that haircut needed correction before sending him out of the salon you have no business cutting hair. Anyway, I'd been doing my best with scissors at home, but my son's hair grows quickly and he was constantly having to push it out of his eyes. It was time to go to the professionals. We saw Kate at Prep. Making the appointment and paying ahead of time online was so easy and helpful. When we showed up we were the only people at the salon, and it was quiet and calm. It's helpful to not have an overstimulating environment. That said, my kid loves screen time and he latched right onto the ipad (preloaded with tons of kids movies and shows). Kate had a calm demeanor, was super patient with us and was able to give my son a stellar haircut. She was even able to use clippers on him. This is a kid who hates noise and freaks out if I even turn my hair dryer on so I was shocked he let her near him with clippers buzzing. I credit her even keel manner and the Finding Dory magic. The whole process took around 30 minutes and his haircut, did I mention his haircut? He looks so handsome. I had parents asking me for the salon info for weeks afterwards. It was stylish enough to be an adult haircut and is growing out wonderfully. Best of all there's no more hair in his eyes. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Okayyyyyyy this place was actually the worst. First off, I don't think the hairdresser understood one bit what I wanted even when I offered to show pics, maybe distracted by the top 40 garbage music from three years ago. Secondly, the shampoo and conditioner or whatever they put in my hair smells like acetone, I was trying to get a haircut not my nails cut. Thirdly, I genuinely asked for the exact opposite of what she cut my hair, I might as well have told her I wanted to go bald. Fourthly, I should've just tied my hair in a ponytail and cut it myself. The reason this review even merits four stars is because I guess she did cut my hair, not the length or the way I wanted it to be AT ALL, but it is cut. :( read more

Fantastic customer service, and very pleased with my daughter's haircut. Mandy did a great job cutting my two year old's hair, and she couldn't have been more patient - clearly she has experience with kids. We'll definitely be back! Thanks Prep! March 2018: Pros: Extremely convenient if you live in Pac Heights, Laurel Heights or Presidio Heights. Thought $35 for a haircut was borderline expensive for a 2 year old, but happy to pay for the convenience. Cons: Fairly cold receptionist/stylist. Didn't act as though she was excited or happy to be cutting my daughter's hair. Would've thought the professional stylists would be more kid friendly at a kid salon. I can see the allure of Prep for slightly older children. It has a cool vibe, sleek. However for very little kids, I wouldn't recommend it. Just didn't seem kid-friendly environment. read more

With so many positive reviews I was hoping that PREP would be a good haircut experience for my 4 year old son who is a bit fearful. I booked a haircut with Ella and when we came for our appointment there was a child getting his haircut and crying loudly, not the stylists fault but she definitely could've been more comforting. At this point my son is becoming increasingly anxious. By the time we get to the chair the stylist took some time to talk to him and he was able to calm down and begin his haircut. She began cutting but seemed not to understand what I wanted despite me showing her a picture. Seems frustrated with my son looking down watching YouTube and that he was scared by the shampoo. Towards the end they just seemed to want us out of there. Reminding us twice that the next client was waiting. Never mind the fact we also began our appointment late due to the previous client. I would happily pay the $35 fee and wait longer for better service but it seems PREP is more interested in pushing client after client out the door than customer service. The haircut itself is also very disappointing given the fact my son actually sat very still. We won't be coming back. read more

Seriously, my sometimes difficult and highly sensitive 5 year old daughter never complained during her hair cut. Not about a single thing. The place is conducive to that. They treat children with respect and that gives them the upper hand. This is her first "real" hair cut. She has never had a hair cut in a proper place before, for the most part she has refused to get her hair cut until know. Prep is specializing in hair cuts for kids.
