Prik Hom never serves a boring dish. Every plate we tried was packed with flavor and felt thoughtfully executed. The pork boat soup was excellent, with almost a gelatinous texture, but the standout for me was the marinated crispy crab salad! It's tangy, sweet, and full of flavor. It had a pronounced fish sauce note, but it was beautifully balanced with sweetness and acidity, making it complex without being overpowering. Unlike some Thai dishes where the fish sauce can dominate, here it complemented the other flavors without being too in your face. Don't skip dessert. The smoked coconut ice cream was a favorite of mine too! smoky, sweet, fragrant, and perfectly balanced. It's one of those desserts that lingers in your memory long after the meal is over. The service was warm and attentive throughout the meal, and the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, creating a welcoming and thoughtfully designed atmosphere that elevates the dining experience. One of the things I love most is that the menu changes with the seasons, which keeps things exciting and gives you a reason to come back and try something new. We had this Michelin guide Thai spot on our list for a while and finally made a reservation for dinner on Saturday night since their menu had more chicken/veggie options for me to try (made the reservation a day or two before). It's not a huge spot so definitely recommend making a reservation or if you do walk in, they may have bar seating. We found parking easily on a Sat evening. I made a same day reservation on Resy for 5pm on a Thursday. It wasn't needed. There were only 2-3 other tables occupied there during our entire meal. Menu changes. Currently their menu is running from March - June. Ordered the following: Scallops with lemongrass 5/5 - a must have! Citrus salad with soft shell crab 4/5 - crispy fried crab with generous serving of 3 different kinds of citrus Grilled black cod curry 4/5 - a tad spicy and a watery curry sauce Branzino and tamarind 5/5 - crispy and tender fish w/rainbow carrots and addicting sweet sauce Purple rice 4/5 Ultimate Thai tea 3/5 - a bit different but prefer the OG Smoked young coconut ice cream 4/5 - not a fan of the candle smoke. The restaurant has a small space and a reservation is a must. Our party had three people on a weeknight. You will definitely be close to your neighboring tables. So keep this in mind when trying out this place. They have a seasonal menu and be sure to check the website to see what they are serving. The portions are actually larger than I was expecting. They are meant to be shared. Though I got just the tom ka mushroom soup it filled me up. I kept putting my spoon into the bowl and the amount of mushrooms seemed to never end. It was very flavorful and would recommend. The duck confit and black soy sauce didn't seem to have much duck. My friend was digging around for it. My other friend got the umami shrimp and enjoyed it. I would say this place kicks around somewhere in the 3.5 to 4 star range. The meal was pretty solid overall. Overhyped? Yes, I would agree with that. I would describe this place as fitting in about midway between your standard thai fare and your fancier places like Kin Khao and Nari. The prices also fit in about midway between the two. This dish had the most heat, but I still wanted some more. Overall, the restaurant did not meet my expectations, but, taking the expectations out of the equation, it is a very solid neighborhood restaurant. Overall I'd say it's a good experience, but I give it four stars and this review because I think there's potential for doing better! Service is spectacular - the man who helped us was so kind and wonderful. He was exactly what you look for in a waiter, anticipating our needs, suggesting what makes sense, answering questions, and being fast and thorough. He did make one mistake though, he promised me some spicy food, and I never got spicy food in the entire meal. It says at the top of the menu "If you love Spicy Food, Let us Know" or something along those lines. I told him that two of us liked spicy food, and two of us didn't, so it'd be nice to get a couple dishes that were VERY VERY VERY spicy. He said of course, we would be blown away - he then brought us these dishes and they weren't that spicy at all. Even one of the non-spicy lovers thought it wasn't that spicy. Now the scallops and brulee-d bananas are the winners. You should get both. I do like the "Spicy Beef" which was good - and with the addition of some spicy peppers and sauce a bit spicy. The Scallops were just perfectly cooked and seasoned and truly no notes there. The wine selection was excellent with some great natural wines that went very well with the meal. Been meaning to try Prik Hom from when it first opened but was super hard to get a reservation in the past! Went on a Saturday dinner at 7pm and it was surprisingly not super packed and easy to make a reservation. We got the scallops which I do think is their best dish even though it is $8 per scallop. We also got the fried chicken, beef cheek panang curry, tomyum fish, eggplant, umami shrimp, and sides of rice and the Thai ice tea too. Also got the coconut icecream dessert! The food was all good, but nothing amazing or out of the ordinary (the best dish was the scallop though). Portion sizes were pretty small and do expect to spend around $60-90 pp here. We also found it was very echo-ey which made it difficult to talk even though the tables were pretty spread out and the ceilings weren't super low. The location is right off a bit street, so there's only street parking. I really loved the atmosphere inside, it's a small restaurant that's lively and the staff was able to recommend some amazing dishes. The flavors were rich and I appreciated the quality ingredients. We started off with the scallops which were perfectly cooked. The beef in the curry was nice and tender with just the right amount of kick and was great with the purple rice. But for me, the star was the shrimp because of how the sauce paired with it. The only thing is portions tended to be on the smaller side as this was just the right amount of food for two people. My friend and I tried scallops and lemongrass, crab meat khao soi shot, fried chicken, branzino yum, beef shank green curry, eggplant with basil, lychee popsicle and smoked young coconut ice cream. Everything was fabulous - the standouts for me were the khao soi shot, beef shank green curry and the eggplant with basil. Service was good but the place can get really busy. With tax and tip, this is a really good dinner for under $100. The restaurant itself is relatively small but I really like the neighborhood restaurant vibes here. It's the third Thai restaurant to be added to the Michelin guide for San Francisco, which was enough reason for me to try it, and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant's interior is small and simple but nice. Prik Hom means "aromatic chili" in the Thai language. The menu is à la carte. They also have a set menu, but you need 6 people to order it. I ordered two starters (they are small), one entree, and a dessert. * Scallops and lemongrass * Crab Meat Khao Soi Shot * Yellowtail with thick red curry, fingerroot, and hen of the wood mushrooms * Smoked young coconut ice cream, smoked with a traditional Thai candle Scallops and crab for starters, what more could you ask for? Food: Menu changes every 3-4 months. Don't miss the Son Yum In Law (5/5) if it's on the menu. It's the most unique dish we had and just delicious. I don't know how they have the most delicate crispy fried whole egg while the egg is still a bit runny. The eggplant (5/5) was our favorite dish by far. Oxtail soup (3.5/5) was nice but I did not find it to be that flavorful and it was a rather small bowl of soup. The scallop (4/5) was good but wouldn't order it again at $8 per scallop. There were two desserts and we tried both. I thought the smoked coconut ice cream was delicious and creamy. The lychee popsicles sounded great and it was fine but did not wow me. It's also hard to share so just know that. Service: friendly and prompt. The only thing I didn't like after being there twice is that it seems like they are sales people, always upselling the scallops or the Thai teas to you no matter what. Ambiance: I do like that it's a small space. Nothing too special but that's ok. I was happy that it wasn't too loud or too dark. Just right. Unpopular opinion: Overrated. With its recent recognition by the NYT and a mention on the Michelin Guide, Prik Hom has blown up. They open reservations 2 months in advance, I made one for January in November but saw one slot opened in December when I checked again two weeks after. Service seemed a little slow. 90 minute time limit felt short. Staff is not engaging, they do not offer any information except when they think you're not ordering enough. They'd tell you to order more, at least 4 items for 2 people, not including rice as it will be your 5th item. And so we ordered the following - **Hat Yai Fried Chicken - they served us RAW chicken. It happens I guess BUT the chicken comes chopped in small pieces. We saw it the moment it was put on the table, it was pretty visible had they only checked. Our server was apologetic and someone else from the kitchen came out to apologize as well after replacing it with a new one. Flavor was there however the chicken was dry. I liked the fried shallots on top. They need to figure out how to make that chicken moist though. **Yum Son-in-Law - the only thing I actually liked. 3 eggs with crispy edges, with some greens and Thai dressing. It was fresh, savory, creamy and tangy at the same time. **Halibut Curry - the housemade curry sauce was delicious with deep flavors of coconut base sauce. It was not spicy so the peppers are a must if you want some spice. I wish they'd put more because it was enough only to cover the plate as a bed for the fish. I felt like my tastebuds were being teased and yet it failed to give me a resounding finish. It was good while it lasted kinda moment. **Squid with Salted Egg Sauce - come on now. This had no salted egg flavor at all. It was more like a creamy scrambled or tempered regular egg turned into a sauce. The squid albeit cut into strips, was rubbery and chewy. No saving grace for this dish. **Jasmine Rice - yes, a separate paragraph for rice. Why? Because it was lumpy. Where are my rice lovers at? If you cook rice at home you'll get what I'm saying. It is that moment when your rice cooker hits Warm, Keep Warm or End and you immediately scoop rice out. That is exactly how I would describe it. I know it's only rice but please try to fluff it at least. The desserts sounded promising but I was so displeased that I thought it would be best not to order anything more that might aggravate an already bad experience. Ambiance: it's cozy and a pretty small place - but they will put tables together if you have a larger party (I saw two parties of 6 when I was there). Service was good and the staff were all nice. Food: Scallops and lemongrass [5/5]: absolutely must try! The scallops are super tender and i love the spicy, tanginess of the broth. Eaten together = flavor bomb. I think my favorite dish of the night. Oxtail soup [4.5/5]: really loved this - I think we read in the reviews that this soup would be earthy and heavy - it isn't! It's light but warming and I think has the perfect level of spice to get your stomach craving for more food. The oxtail is incredibly tender and yummy gelatinous bits and the broth is super aromatic. Grilled beef curry [4.5/5]: super smooth and creamy curry. Loved how the beef fell apart and melts in your mouth. A little on the saltier side for me but most people will say it is just right. Eggplant with basil [5/5]: ok WOW this really tasted like stir fried beef (this is a compliment). The garlic and soy ginger sauce was soooo yummy, the eggplants were cooked just right and not mushy. A fantastic side. Smoked coconut ice cream [3/5]: ok so it was yummy but i thought it was too smokey? Honestly i kept burping up this smokey flavor 3-4hours after my meal lol and the aftertaste was not pleasant. All the dishes are so well-prepared, with amazing depths of flavors. They specialize in making curry from scratch so get their curries! The ingredients are fresh and the dishes are hard to find even in Thailand! Very traditional old school dishes with some modern twist. Everything we had from the all star menu was great. My favorite was the halibut go lae curry and scallop appetizer is the close second. Other dishes complement each other well. Coconut ice cream is good if you like thai jasmine flavor. lychee popsicle is refreshing with tart cranberries. Recommend getting the riceberry rice! This is the unique review of Prik Hom by Erik Hom (no relation). I live just around the corner and the name of the restaurant was a joke in the family and friends who started calling me by the name of the restaurant until the NY Times mentioned it as one of the Top New restaurants in the US. As you can imagine an article endorsement like that can make it difficult to make reservations and when you look on the online site you will not find anything available. I saw a reservation available once, but it was gone quickly. It is so funny that when a restaurant is trendy these days we all assume we need a reservation. But playing a hunch one dayI know most small restaurants only open a few reservations a night so I went by and asked. The gentleman didn't speak fluent English and I don't speak Thai but basically I heard they were too busy and just weren't taking online reservations until 2024, but I was always welcome to come by and go in on a first come first served basis. So I decided to show up a little before 5 on a Friday with a dining partner with a sense of adventure and voila, we were in! First of all the restaurant's name comes from their two basic Ingredients Prik for Chili, and Hom for Shallots or in their interpretation "Spicy Smells Good" So as mentioned, this is authentic Thai food so if you are looking for Pad Thai, a yellow curry dish or lots of Americanized noodle dishes , you won't find much you recognize other than Thai Iced Tea and Coke. The food is on the higher end than most Thai restaurants and while there are meat dishes the focus is on seafood and vegetables. A meal consisting of one starter, a curry, a salad and a stir fry as well as a couple drinks for 2 came to $130, so if the price and $8 scallops is not your bag, there are lots of other Thai restaurants in the area. So now for the meal review. Picked the Monterey Bay Scallops with Lemongrass as a starter which was served as a shot. It was probably the best scallop I've had in a long time. What followed was the Northern Thai Style Pork Larb Kua salad. It is more like a meat salad served in lettuce cups with some basil, parsley and tomatoes. Probably the spiciest dish of the night it made me sweat. AaNext was my surprise dish of Black Cod and Clams Curry. Whoa I had no idea I'd like this. Their house curry was so smooth that I slurped it all up in my empty clam shells. Then came the shrimp with Chili Jam! Yes! My goodness again the sauce I had to just eat with the bowl of mixed rice. I cleaned it all up! Finally, the ice cream dessert. Sound so trite to eat ice cream in a restaurant but that was the beauty. The smoked coconut ice cream came in a covered coupe with gold spoons. The ice cream is infused with an Imported thai candle fragrance so when you take off the lid, Voila! Did I mention Hom means "smells good"? Part of taste comes with smell and this was the perfect palate cleanser. As for the ambiance? It feels a bit formal with the tables prepared with wine glasses but of the dozen tables I saw only one table with wine. Everyone was dressed fairly casual and the ambiance music was a mix of 70s and 80s r&b and disco which got drowned out by the chatter when the restaurant filled up. A little Donna Summer never hurt anyone. Everyone was friendly asking each other what dishes they were having. The Shrimp, fried chicken, and fries starters all looked fun and tasty. The ladies next to us recommended the ox tail soup. Only two of the tables seemed to be pre-reserved and they were both 4-Tops. This is definitely a 2-4 party restaurant. Be prepared to use your fingers for some dishes! Enjoy! Meal took 90 minutes, food came quick. Owners and cooks in back with two servers FOH. I normally give 4 stars to leave room for improvement, but I just HAVE to give the additional star for the similar name and the dessert which was well executed in its style. read more

Great Thai restaurant. Not your traditional spot. I liked their scallop and lemongrass and the branzino with clams the most. The grilled shrimps, served with grapes were interesting but it's not knocking my socks off. The tom ka grilled mushroom was very forgettable. I wouldn't get it again. We heard that they made their curry in house. If we come back, I would try that. read more
