This will always be one of my favorite places in Laughlin, but last night (2/15) was not a good visit. I checked in for my 8pm reservation around 745. Went to the Hideaway Bar next door. (Yes, they were a little busy). 8pm comes, nothing yet, which was fine. 815 comes around, still nothing. I go to the desk to ask how much longer. We went to the Riverside Prime Rib Room right at 4pm when it opened. Had reservations (which I highly recommend) and were seated right away by the windows -- the view of the river was beautiful and really set the tone for a nice evening. The staff was great -- super friendly and welcoming. Our server Mary was wonderful, felt like we'd known her for years by the end of the night. You start with the salad bar, which was really fresh and had some great options -- I especially loved the beet salad, which was a nice surprise! When you're ready for your main, the carver comes right over to your table and slices your meat. I got the prime rib medium with mushrooms -- SO tender I could cut it with my fork. The crust was seasoned perfectly -- lots of flavor without overpowering the meat. I went back for sides and loaded up: baked potato with sour cream and bacon (loved it!), mashed potatoes, veggies, and creamed spinach. Veggies were just okay, and the creamed spinach was a bit too rich for my taste, but the baked potato was spot on. The Prime Rib Room is legit famous. Everyone who has ever gone to Laughlin knows about it, it's highly touted and has been for years. Located in the Riverside Casino, which is also an icon in itself. Welp, years ago it was fantastic and a great deal. However, fast forward to recent years and it has, sadly, gone down hill. I mean it is still okay but I kind of feel like I'm at a small Golden Corral, basically. You go through the salad bar, which is a nice size with just about anything you could want for a basic salad. Then you go get your carbs on; mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, French fries, creamed spinach, rolls, scalloped potatoes. Keep in mind that the French fries taste exactly like fish sticks and the creamed spinach is really odd (some say fantastic others say horrible). Once you have that, then the chef comes and asks you which type of main meal you are having; Prime Rib, Chicken Cordon Bleu, or the Fish of the Day (salmon and cod are actually wonderful!) Prime Rib is really flavorful and juicy. Once you have your dinner in your belly, you can go back up for the dessert bar; pies, ice cream, cakes. My favorite is the blueberry pie with a little ice cream, pretty good, but definitely an all-you-can-eat joint kind of pie. Service is fantastic here though, everyone is so friendly and helpful. Drinks are refilled promptly and instructions on what to do are always presented clearly for you. Now, here's where I think this place has it made... the view!!! Almost every seat in the restaurant has a view of that beautiful Colorado River and all it's glory. The view makes this place go from Golden Corral status to Ok Not Bad! status. Excellent all around, let me tell you why: First, let me explain how this works, because the website doesn't really tell you: This is a prime rib restaurant, and everything else is served buffet style. You pay at the counter before you sit down (like a typical Vegas buffet), then they take you to your table and grab your drink order. Next, off to the buffet for soup and salad. Once you finish soup and salad, then swing back up to the buffet for your sides (baked potato, mashed potato, au gratin potato, spinach or mixed vegetables - there may have been more, I don't recall all the choices). When you return to the table, then the prime rib guy (for lack of a better term) wheels the cart over to your table and cuts you off a 10 ounce piece to your liking. I was told the prime rib is cooked at a high temperature for 3 hours, then left in a low temperature oven for 24 hours to roast. Let me tell you, however they're doing it - it's working because my steak was tender enough to cut with cotton candy. After you finish your steak, back to the buffet for desserts - there were a variety. I had a slice of apple pie and a slice of rhubarb pie - both were okay. Now, let's make sure to set the right expectations: this is a buffet style restaurant at $27.99 per person, so don't think you're going into a fine dining establishment - but the quality was outstanding for the money. After returning to your table with your potatoes and vegetables a gentleman with a Prime Rib Cart comes over to ask what your choice is for a main course. Your choices are Prime Rib Temperature Your Way, or Chicken Cordon Blue, or The Fish of the day. He then from the Prime Rib Cart he brings to your table carves your meat to your liking. Loretta asked for A End Cut and he went back in the kitchen and brought her back a nice slab. I asked for a Medium Rare slice and he carved it and sat it in front of me asking if that was ok, Also if we wanted Sautéed Mushrooms with our entrees. Of corse we did. This was one grim meal. Less than $30/head didn't seem like a terrible deal for Prime Rib and an AYCE salad/potato/dessert bar, but we came out wishing that we had just eaten in the food court downstairs. The view of the river from our table was nice, but that's about all I can say for the place. Poorly replenished salad with dried out/withered veggies, crusty mashed potatoes, congealed gravy, and sauces with pools of grease and flecks of other food in them abound. My prime rib was so fatty, grisly, and cold that I could only saw off and eat a couple of bites. My wife's chicken cordon bleu was definitely reheated from frozen and came with a nasty sauce that had a skin on it. The pies were similarly inedible. The pecan pie was basically a cornstarch wedge with a couple of charred nuts on top. The soft serve machine was broken. The cocktail waitresses rotate in from the casino floor and take forever to bring drinks. The best part was when my wife asked which is their most popular cocktail, and the girl told her "Probably the martini from the martini bar, but we're not allowed to bring them in, so you'll have to get one after you leave the restaurant." I'll start with the salad bar. It was really good. Lettuce was crisp and the topping selection was decent and everything was good. They also have fresh fruit and a decent pasta salad. Both me and wife were happy with the salad. Next would be the sides. Basically the sides were low grade buffet mashed potatoes or au gratin potatoes really bad potato wedges and a baked potato. The baked potatoes were by far the star. Baked potatoes were decent. Then the only veggie was a creamed spinach which I was not going to try. Next up the main course. I got prime rib and wife got the chicken. The prime rib was ok. I ate the whole thing but it was definitely on the bottom scale of prime ribs I've had. Also the mushrooms I believe are canned-not good. The chicken on the other hand was very bland. It was as if no seasoning was used in its creation. We finished with some very underwhelming desserts.
