Thank god for Andy Kao. My refrigerator broke last week and another company, Appliance Service and Repairs, came out for repairs. After an hour the repairman said it was the compressor and he didn't have the part and it would be $300 when he came back on Monday. So today he showed up, spent another hour, said he had fixed it and left. I told him the fan in the freezer was too loud but he said that was normal. Shortly after that the same problem was occurring. The fan in the freezer compartment sounds like a lawn mower and the refrigerator compartment is not cold. I called the company and they just argued with me and said the best they could do is send someone again tomorrow. At that point I called Andy Kao and left a message on his voicemail begging for help. Within an hour he called me back and was able to diagnose the problem on the phone. He was on his way home but he came over to my house instead. Within a few minutes he had fixed the problem which turned out to be a loose fan. I was getting desperate as I'm due to have surgery on Wednesday and couldn't deal with this mess, and no food! Our Microwave suddenly stopped working last week. It clearly wasn't anything major, and I was able to troubleshoot the problem to a broken door switch. I didn't feel comfortable performing the repair myself, so I called several application service companies asking for help. Andy was the only one who offered to perform the work; the other companies all refused saying they did not work on microwave ovens. We hated to throw away a $700 device because of a $20 part! Andy is really great. The other reviews are spot on - he helped diagnose the problem via text, came with parts, further diagnoses and fixes the issue. We had a Whirlpool Cabrio dryer not heating. He thought it was the circuit board or the hearing elements so came with both. Turned out it was a blown thermostat and shorted circuit board (he showed me every step as he discovered it so I didn't feel like I was at a car mechanic). Super nice guy as well. I just had Andy out, for the first time, based on these Yelp reviews, to repair our refrigerator, which was occasionally leaking water from the front corner. When I talked to Andy and described the problem, he seemed to immediately understand this issue: he sees this problem in these types of refrigerators all the time.* He offered to explain how I could fix the problem myself (Andy doesn't know me, but he apparently has a much higher opinion of my abilities than I do!). My washing machine broke and I was referred to Andy by another appliance repair person I had worked with before who couldn't come quickly. Andy did come quickly. We communicated mostly by text in diagnosing the potential problem and setting the appt, which was handy for me. He clearly knows his stuff -- he asked me if a certain rubber ring was black or gray, which would indicate the origins of the product manufacturing. My 20 year old Kenmore dryer quit working late at night. I called Sears first thing in the morning and was told the earliest they could schedule was a week out. The same with two other repair places. He was prompt, incredibly fast in determining the problem, had a great bid and out the door in less than an hour. The dryer works perfectly again. I highly recommend him. Our 18-year old front-loading Maytag washing machine started to smoke (literally!) and then stopped; Andy was recommended to us as someone who might be able to fix it. Andy did a great job fixing the machine, but he also was one of the most professional repair people we've used. He asked questions early on to determine if this was a problem he could fix; he let us know what all of our options were, and what the costs would be; and he pointed out any problems that might crop up after the initial problem was solved, even if they were unlikely. He also tracked down a rare replacement part (the only one in the USA -- in Hawaii!) and had it shipped to us. The price was very reasonable, and we are completely satisfied. Our washer started to act up so we need to find someone that will likely respond ASAP. Called Andy based on the review here. Andy is exactly awesome like advertised! Instead of just showing up and collect a trip fee like just about all others would, he talked me through some diagnostic steps, asked for the symptoms and for a recorded video of the actual problem which in this case is a really loud spin cycle and clunking noises. He was able to determine the likely problem and advised that the problem would likely not be worth the cost to fix, which based on the age of the machine, we agreed. Great conscientious service! Andy comes to the rescue again! This was my second time using Andy's services to repair an appliance. The first was in July to repair my dryer that had stopped spinning. I was referred to him by another appliance repair person since I was not in the original person's service area. My dryer broke on a Sunday and I had a 2 month old baby at the time and when you have a newborn or kids in general, washing/drying clothes is a daily event. Anyway, Andy called back right away when I left a message and he was very courteous on the phone. He was knowledgeable and seemed to be able to diagnose the problem over the phone. He arrived promptly, assessed the situation and provided a reasonable quote. He was very nice and did not charge me any extra for it being a Sunday. Really great service and he was also very neat and did not leave a mess in the laundry area. On this second occasion, I called about my washer. He came out right away. Again he assessed the situation, provided a reasonable quote and repaired it right away. I have been pleased with his overall service and will definitely call him again if I need to. This was great til i saw the bill. 230.00. i asked him what he charges for labor and he sort of squirmed and said its a flat fee. Odd that he didn't just tell me the full amount when he was quoting the price. When he saw my raised eyebrow he lowered the price 20.00. 160.00 for 20 minutes of labor. Thought I was doing the right thing calling a small biz...maybe not. Washing machine works great. I just couldn't help wondering if I 'd been male would this have gone differently? I didn't actually have Andy come out, which is why I'm giving him a good review :) He listened to my description of the problem with my dishwasher over the phone, told me what he thought it could be, then told me that if it was one thing, he could probably handle it, but if it was something else, he wouldn't be the right guy (I have a Bosch and apparently they're pretty tricky). He gave me a referral. Most other people would have said sure, I'll come out, then charged the service fee and then told me that I would need a new dishwasher anyway (which I think is going to be the case). Not Andy! Andy Kao resolved two appliance problems for me over the phone. Two years ago he looked up my model/serial number for my refrigerator which was leaking water (the water was meant to go in a glass). He said the refrigerator was so old it was it wasn't worth repairing. So he saved me a service trip for a fridge that had long outlasted its expected life span. Today I told him the broiler in my oven wasn't working (an old gas stove) and he diagnosed the problem as user error after very clearly and methodically walking me through the steps to diagnose the root of the problem.
