We've been living in the area for almost a year, but we have not tried Tico's (even though we are AVID Mexican food fans). From the outside, the place looks like a dive, which shouldn't have dissuaded me, because I know that "dives" tend to be the best restaurants. When we first moved here, someone told me this place was disgusting. So, I never gave it chance. Plus, there were only 2 reviews here on Yelp. I always worry about places with so few reviews. Recently, though, someone told my husband that the place was good. So we decided to give it a try. Boy, am I glad we did! This is the ONLY Mexican food restaurant in the area. It tastes like many of the family owned restaurants I love back in my hometown in New Mexico. The food was tasty. The service was good. I'm glad we went. I had the carnitas. They were very good--typical carnitas, with a nice hot chile sauce. But my husband had a combo plate with smothered tamales. YUM. I will definitely get the tamales next time. read more

I tried to give them another chance after having awful service and food the last time, but I will never return after waiting 45 minutes for cold tacos that tasted and smelled like dog food. I live not even five minutes down the road, and literally they didn't even try to warm up the meat before shoving them into my tacos and enchiladaS. WE have eaten there a few times now and have not been disappointed. This food is the real deal. The owners are Texans, and the food reflects their upbringing. The menu is varied and the portions are huge! The owner waited on us the last time we were in and was friendly and helpful even gave us a sample of their homemade horchata ( a rice drink with cinnamon) Delicious! Delicious food. I always get the burrito al carbon and get it double stuffed. It's amazing. The food tastes fresh and it's very filling. The people are amazing. They are so nice and friendly. My family has been going here since they opened (and to the original Tico's for years before that). This is, by far, my favorite place to eat in the area. The restaurant serves both Mexican and Italian. Everything I have ever tried has been at least very good. The entire Mexican menu is amazing (the steak Tacos Al Carbon are a personal favorite). The Italian menu is also well done. The garlic pizza and honey mustard are the best I have ever tried. I definitely think that the Mexican menu is the star, but you can't go wrong with either. The portions are huge, prices are reasonable, the staff is always very friendly, and the food is AMAZING. The food was pretty good. They only have one waitress so the wait was a little long, but the service was ok. I asked for a refill but the waitress was also the cashier so I was forgotten. The steak tacos Mexicanos were the best out of the Carnitas and Barbacoa. It is a really small place so probably take out would be a better bet. read more

Refried beans tasted as if they were straight from the can, rice was undercooked. Husband got chile poblanos and one of the peppers seemed to have a bad spot. Went around 3:30, the wait was okay food didnt take long, we ordered a kids taco meal and 2 penne a la vodkas. Everything essentially was unseasoned. The shredded chicken in the burrito didnt taste good, the rice was okay and the refried beans had a chalky taste to it. The pasta was al dente, but there was barely any sauce in the to to pan. I have been to Tico's 2x, first time we ordered was Asada tacos and it was good but a little pricey. 2nd try I tried mole enchiladas but the chicken was extremely blend and the mole wasn't spicy, totally regretted ordering the mole. Beans seemed ehhh so was the rice. read more

Amazing service! Very friendly and hospitable. They had pan dulce (sweet bread) and it hit the spot! I have yet to find a place that serves menudo. This place has it and it's delicious! This was a HORRIBLE experience. From the beginning of our time at Tico's we were greeted with bad food and bad attitude. Our salsa and chips tasted like jared gas station sauce that lacked flavor completely. When our meals finally came, the chicken tasted raw (how do you mess up chicken breasts), the burrito was simply a bunch of gross looking shredded beef wrapped in a small flour tortilla, and to top it off they messed up our order of fajitas. When we asked for the correct order, they addressed us angrily as if we were trying to cheat them from their money and took all of the food we ordered away! I have never had such a disgraceful and unpleasant experience. Overall, Ticos/Primos was gross, lacked all flavor, and the service was completely disgusting, rude, and the absolute WORST customer service I have ever experienced in my entire life. I will never return here and will never recommend this disgusting restaurant to anyone I respect or even do not respect. Do not go here... save your money and your tastebuds and get some gross McDonalds food (it'll do you better). read more

I am actually appalled at all the nice comments I read before I made my post. One other post had this place spot on. I have lived in the area for 15+ years and we used to frequent this restaurant when it was just Primos. The food was actually really good then. Not sure what happened to the place now after the two restaurants combined, but I still hear from friends that this place has good food. A friend of mine suggested this place so the wife and I had to check it out. We arrived at 5pm and were seated almost immediately. The waiter came out and took our order and then it went downhill from there. There was only only one other family there. About thirty minutes while we waited, the other table got their food. That left us next to get our food. At 40 minutes, my wife flagged down the waiter and asked for our chips and salsa so we had something. Nothing, he brought us nothing. At one hour, we were pretty heated. Still no food. At 65 minutes, we got up and left. The lady in the kitchen even asked us if we were leaving? Like, hello, no food, no service, no customer. I just replied yes and left. There's only three people working there. Not sure how they can survive or have happy customers. I just say, stay away. There's better food and service in Watertown. read more

Today was Cinco de mayo and when my husband and I went it looked busy but we quickly realized its because they were so set back in order we ended up waiting two hours for our food. The cook came out and talked to a few customers about how they ran out of rice and everyone was getting double beans (that was just the begining). After waiting an hour I decided not to ask for a refund bc the food was coming out soon or so I thought. People who were waiting longer then i was ask for two min side of sour cream and guacamole and the restaurant charged them after they waited that lone it should have been free. About 20 min before I got my food the cook came out to ask what I wanted on my burrito and when I said ill take everything but jalapeños and he asked what I wanted on it like it was the hardest thing to figure out of the 5 ingredients he himself listed out could not figure out how to subtract jalapeños from that list. After waiting another 20 min for him to figure out what goes on a burrito I got my food from a nice lady who threw in chips because I didn't order them. When I got home they I saw they did not put sour cream on the burrito which shocked me because it was one of the things I made clear to the cook who had an attitude with me. My buriito was not a burrito it was in a taco shell and everything was just hanging out of it. I have worked im many restaurants and the fact that I one waited 2 hours for my food and two it was Cinco de mayo so maybe they would have some clue that they might be have more customers then normal. If it was possible to give it a half a star i would and the refund would not have given the two hours of wasted time back to me. read more

Visited yesterday for lunch with my husband and daughter. We came from Watertown. If your from here or surrounding areas it's alittle bit of a drive, but don't let that stop you!! Definitely worth it! My husband ordered chicken and shrimp fajitas and i ordered pollo encremado and jalapeno bacon wraps. Prices were great, came out quick and steaming hot. My daughter had just had lunch at school but she was still able to eat alittle off my plate (huge portions) and i still had leftovers to take home. Just as delicious as i remember. I worked for this family 10 years ago when they were located on the square. I have so much respect for them and i just love how they all work together so well to be so successful. Teamwork definitely makes the dream work! My husband and I talked with Joe the owner, and he was telling us about how they took on the Italian menu from the previous owner. So if your not feeling Mexican that day but your family is, then you have a FULL Italian menu to choose from. I was floored! They are just so passionate about what they do.. i feel they could cook ANY type of dish honestly and kill it!! This was my very first serving job and I've been in the serving industry ever since. (all others being corporate and franchise) There's just something special about this family owned business.. everyone works together so well and cares so much about eachother, the work they put into their dishes and the restaurant AS A WHOLE. My wife is Hispanic and we are both from Texas. Just PCSed here a few months and was looking for some Mexican food other than Taco Bell. Found this little gem and really enjoyed the food. I think it's a bit pricey and a tad bit small but I think the food was pretty good. I've gone back a few times and will continue to go as long as we're at Drum. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

For the area, this place does Mexican food quite well. The lunch time specials are all reasonable

I am only giving this place one star because zero is not an option. I ate from their Italian menu and it was not good. The salad was coated in water that the lettuce was dripping from my fork. I ordered pasta and the noodles were incredibly bland and the entire dish was filled with water. I was very dissatisfied. I have yet to try their Mexican but I do not recommend the Italian. read more

I'm really sad that my husband and I didn't try this place sooner. I've craved Mexican food the entire time we've been at Fort Drum but heard many mixed reviews about this place. The food here was really good. I liked that it was quick, hot, and tasty. I wish they had a bigger sitting area but it was still doable. I had the HUGE quesadilla and definitely was not disappointed. There was a hefty amount of chicken and cheese in there and it tasted amazing. One of the downsides is that I don't think they gave you enough guac, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, or salsa for the size of the quesadilla but it still tasted good. Not impressed at all. Wish there were more options for Mexican food in the area. Salsa tasted like tomato sauce from a can with some veggies mixed in. I am extremely disappointed and disgusted over our experience here the other day. The place was packed due to an event and it was obvious this place was not ready or experienced enough to handle such a large crowd. It took forever before we got our drinks (just a water and a coke) , we received a basket of chips with very very little salsa, I couldn't get the waitresses attention, they just would not look at us or make any eye contact and quickly walk right passed us. We spent a couple of hours and NO REFILLS. On to food-my good came out first, just a regular quesadilla, nothing to sing the praises for, and my husband, who ordered the exact same thing did not get his food for at least 20 minutes. The waitress placed his food at another table where it sat and probably was handled by those sitting at the table for a good 5 minutes before she realized it had to come to us. She walked over and took the food from the other table and dropped it off at ours and when I said "uh excuse me it's been touched by the other table" she just walked off and did not look at us or come back. I am very disgusted and my husband did not eat his food. If this is how they handle wrong orders there is no telling what kitchen sanitation looks like. I WILL NEVER eat here again. This is LEGIT Mexican food! Great quality, big quantity, very reasonable prices! When I'm here I don't feel like I'm eating at a restaurant, I feel like I'm eating at a family members home, like eating a home cooked meal. I love eating here and telling my friends about it!
