I am new to Chicago and found Private Volvo Mechanic. I had broken my right mirror on a 2018 V60. The base cost just for the mirror was $1800 and he immediately advised me to buy a used one on Ebay. Guided me through part and color, cost me $225 plus $300 labor, which was far less than dealer. I then had him do a full brake job (much overdue) and tuneup. All were done perfectly and for probably two-thirds or less of dealer cost (not even counting parts). He also buffed out a serious scrape for $70 (!) I strongly recommend him to anyone with a Volvo, but he also works on other cars. read more

I purchased a 2006 Volvo C70 for my daughter. Although a pre-inspection had been done by an internet based company called Lemon Squad giving the car a clean bill of health I had a nagging feeling that there were some underlying issues (there was some vibration in during acceleration, rough idle). As Volvo's are a little different from other brands of cars I wanted to find a specialist to have a look. Doing some looking around on the Swedish car forums (Swedespeed for example) I found that Private Volvo Mechanic kept coming up for being knowledgable and performing high-quality work. So, I reached out and got a response very quickly (like less than an hour and it was later in the evening after normal business hours). After talking about the issues I set up an appointment and Private Volvo Mechanic went through the car in detail and showed me what needed to be fixed. I agreed to the work and when the parts came in set up an appointment. Car was dropped off. During the next couple of days, I got texts with updates about status and estimated time of pick up which was great. When I picked up the car everything was completed and the car was much improved. Overall, if you have a Volvo this is the person to go to. He knows his stuff and works hard to get the job done in a timely fashion at a reasonable cost. Great independent mechanic to take care of your Volvo. My 2003 XC70 was cared for by a Volvo dealer for years. About 5 years ago I switched to an independent shop. When my daughter moved from California to Illinois with the Volvo, we looked for a mechanic who would be as good as the company left behind. I was worried that a mechanic would take advantage of a young college student needing a car repair. In searching for my Chicago mechanic, I looked at PVM's reviews. Thought they were too good to be true. Well, they are good and deserve to be. My daughter took the car to PVM. He examined the car and sent me videos of the work that needed to be done. There was nothing suggested to be done that was unnecessary. PVM did the work quickly. As a summary of work, he replaced a damaged axel, replaced cracked brake lines and replaced the brake fluid, and replaced worn bushings and tie rods. The price was fair. I did my research and found Private Volvo had 5 star reviews. I called him on Dec. 22 thinking I'd hear from him after Christmas - he got back to me via text within the hour. He gave me a few scenarios based on the info I had for him and open times to drop off the car that day. What mechanic would take a car on the Saturday before Christmas?? It ended working out that I dropped the xc70 on Sunday Dec. 23rd. He would send me an occasional text to give me updates (amazing!). I woke up on Christmas Eve with a text from him saying the car was ready! I figured he'd have it for the week. So, phone call Saturday Dec. 22nd - Sunday Drop off Dec. 23rd - Ready Monday Dec. 24th - THAT IS UNHEARD OF! I've been bringing my 2004 Volvo XC70 to Ed at Private Volvo mechanic since moving to Chicago four years ago. I wanted someone who was knowledgeable about Volvo's and expected good service based on the reviews I had read. What I received has been great service and knowledgeable advice about keeping the XC70 running perfectly even now (and especially now) at 150,000 miles. On the first service, Ed went through the car and had a laundry list of small recommendations in addition to oil and filter stuff, like the cabin air filter, the catalytic converter hangers rusting away and a few other items. On the second service, we had him do the cars second timing belt with Volvo parts, tensioner, and water pump at less $$ than other places I could find. The cars first timing belt was done by a Mercedes dealer on the west coast and no Volvo parts were used, Ed corrected that. He also fixed an exterior windshield post, a spur of the moment-do this now, kind of service and he squeezed me right in. My wife and I plan to keep this car to 250,000 so finding Ed was a godsend. If you own a Volvo (or want an inspection of a used Volvo before purchase) from the 1960's to 2020 and later beyond, I would not hesitate to bring it here.
