I play a lot of competitive volleyball and my training requires explosive movements and maximizing my vertical jump. About 2 months ago, I started noticing a significant imbalance - my left leg felt significantly bouncier than my right leg when doing single leg hops. This came as a huge surprise because I've always believed my right leg was stronger than my left from years of badminton training. It really concerned me and I started looking around for help. I've been working with Dr. Matt for the past 2 months and it has been a complete game changer. He is incredibly knowledgeable and also believes that it's important to keep me in the loop about what's going on and why we're doing the exercises that we're doing. He also has experience in personal training and has been working with my other performance coordinator to tailor my programming, ensuring my rehab plus my training won't be unsustainable. With some trial and error, we learned that I was dealing with a case of jumper's knee but only at certain ranges of motion where my knee tendons were stretched out, like when performing a deep squat. Our biggest breakthrough came when Dr. Matt identified that I needed to target a specific quad isometric with the rectus femoris in a lengthened position. Almost immediately after incorporating that, my knee pain began to subside, and I finally felt like we were heading in the right direction. Working with him has also been a massive eye-opener. Dr. Matt continues to help me identify deep-rooted imbalances and bad motor habits that I had unknowingly built up and ignored for years from playing badminton in high school and being a software engineer. It has been pretty jarring to realize what I had normalized. For instance, I learned that during a heel sit, my left glute could easily touch my heel while my right couldn't. And I learned that my knees are not supposed to hurt when I lunge forward and need to absorb and stop my momentum. Aside from the knee, we've also been working on some other issues, like addressing my collapsed arches, my lack of hip internal/external rotation, ankle dorsiflexion, big-toe mobility, hip-torso separation, and the fact that when I jump, I tend to land on my left leg first as a way of protecting my right leg. I've been to other PTs before for similar issues. Those previous experiences felt a little impersonal and it didn't feel like they empathized with my needs as an athlete and just left me to do some textbook exercises. With Progressive Motion and Dr. Matt, it really feels like I have a team that is just as motivated at figuring out what my unique issues are and will create a personalized plan to address them. I am really looking forward to continuing my work with Dr. Matt. Before going to Joey, I was struggling with back pain for about 7 years. I did not begin to do anything about it until 3 years had passed when I was about 14, which was a huge mistake. After consulting multiple sports medicine doctors, I tried two different physical therapists and a personal trainer who did not help. I felt that they were treating me for my pain based on the textbook symptoms I must be experiencing rather than what I was actually feeling. Eventually, I decided to give up and just deal with the pain. This meant that I had days where I could barely get out of bed, I could not walk to my classes (or anywhere) without pain, and it began to take a serious emotional toll on me. As time went on, I decided to consult my doctor again. He referred me to three neurosurgeons (three so I could get multiple opinions) and this is when I realized that my pediatrician was suggesting that I look into a surgical solution. I went to the appointments with the neurosurgeons and was told that fusing the two vertebrae where my pain is located was my option. Two of the neurosurgeons were willing to do it at my age (at the time I was 17), while the third told me to try more physical therapy. At this point, I was overwhelmed, disappointed, and angry, so once again, I stopped searching for a solution. Thats when my friend recommended Joey to me. I called and was lucky to get an appointment quickly, and after the first session I knew that this was going to work. Since starting PT with Joey roughly seven months ago, I have gone from having debilitating pain to almost none at all. Joey is kind and intelligent, I learn something new every time I go. He takes the time to listen to how I feel when I arrive at the clinic and treats me accordingly, which in turn helps me complete core strengthening exercises without pain. Now, as an 18 year old heading off to college, I am confident that I can continue to use exercises I've learned from Joey to strengthen my core on my own. I've been training with Matt for 4 months to work through a patellar tendinitis injury that I'd been struggling with for over 10 months. As a competitive athlete, it was frustrating to have my knee repeatedly relapse despite diligent rehab with other therapists. What set Matt apart was his ability to look beyond the symptoms and identify the underlying causes. Instead of treating my knee as an isolated problem, he diagnosed multiple contributing factors, including my past history of fractures, sprains, and hip mobility. Each were systematically addressed with targeted exercises in a gradual but effective training plan. An aspect that I appreciated the most was that the rehab never interfered with my training schedule. Every exercise was carefully selected to complement my sport-specific training, strengthen existing weaknesses, and avoid placing unnecessary strain on my knee. Rather than having to choose between rehab and training as competing priorities, they worked hand-in-hand, which was a key element in my recovery and general mental health. Another major benefit was learning how to properly activate muscles that had been underperforming for years. I established better neuromuscular connections with smaller stabilizing muscles that weren't firing correctly, feeling muscle groups activate that I had not effectively engaged before. April of 2016 I injured my neck playing soccer. Because of the severe whiplash my neck took, a lot of things got messed up up there. I had a lot of tension because of adhesions("muscle knots") that built up, l lacked adequate range of motion, and had some nerve stuff going on down my arms every time that I looked down. My point, I was really screwed up! And wish that I would of found Joey a lot sooner. Physical therapy with Kaiser ( have in mind that I saw them for 8 months) did not help AT ALL. Went to 3 different chiropractors.Non of them really helped, and one of them actually made things worse. Be careful seeking chiropractic care, in my humble opinion. Anyways, later on I found NKT (neurokinetic therapy) it helped me out tremendously BUT there was still a missing piece to the puzzle of healing my neck. Neurokinetic therapy was able to help me remove a lot of my adhesions and help with my neck pain, but I was still having some nerve pain down my arms every time I would look down and the range of motion on my neck was still slightly limited. That's where JOEY came in ! His methods on heeling the body where really outstanding to me. After my first session with him, I immediately felt the difference on the range of motion of my neck, everything felt lighter around my neck! What I really liked about his practice is that his emphasis isn't only on heeling the area of discomfort...He also places a lot of emphasis on helping your body as a whole: helping you understand the foundation of proper movement, and what you can do to help your self stay injury free. Not only did he help with my neck tremendously, but also helped with my lower back pain that was troubling me for years every time that I would jog. Let me mention that it only took about 6 sessions to have me feeling pretty dam good. IT DID NOT TAKE HIM 8 MONTHS like Kaiser. Would highly recommend this guy if you are suffering from a sports injury, lacking with range of motion in specific areas of your body or dealing with pain when doing physical activity. I have been working with Ariana once a week for about 5 months now to address gaps left over from my second ACL surgery. I had been doing physical therapy through my insurance for 1.5 year post-surgery, but frustrating experiences with expectations, communication, and lack of progress led me to quit without realizing many of my goals. After another year, I knew I had to do something about this bad knee of mine but wasn't sure where to start. Fortunately, a friend of a friend helped put me in contact with Ariana. From the start she had a non-judgmental and understanding approach towards my situation, which really helped put me at ease. Working with Ariana I have been able to make improvements to strength, control, and ROM that I thought were out of reach for my knee for a long time. Not just limited to my knee, overall I also feel a lot stronger and more capable. Ariana is very detail-oriented, careful, and knowledgeable. Along the way she has pointed out and helped me address various imbalances or behaviors in my body that were causing me problems. She always takes the time to listen to my thoughts and feedback regarding exercises and will tailor things accordingly, trying new things and pushing me to work harder. My experience with Joey has been absolutely fantastic - I had the misfortune of needing back surgery last year and have been seeing him regularly ever since. It is far and away the most beneficial physical therapy I have ever received - a combination of Graston, cupping, Rock Tape, watching movement patterns and educating me on ways to mobilize and 'train' problematic muscles to prevent the need for a repeat surgery. He is incredibly creative with his approach, tailoring all my exercises and routines to fit not only my injury and problematic muscles, but my 6'6" height that leaves some other methods to be unworkable. I have been seeing physical therapists going on two years now, both before and after the surgery, and my experience with Joey is what finally got me going in the right direction. Without his insight I would still not fully understand the circumstances that led to my injury, and how we can correct it all going forward. One note is that he is not covered by insurance but the out-of-pocket expense is certainly worth it. He takes the time with you as opposed to being one of three clients your PT is seeing at the same time in a more traditional clinic - I've utilized my HSA for much of the expenses and certainly consider this a better option than a repeat surgery. If you want to really heal, not just put band-aids on your injury and movement difficulties, Joey is your guy. read more

I went in to work with Joey after experiencing excruciating lower back pain for almost 6 months after being rear ended in a car accident. Joey's attention to detail for his clients and easy going personality make the rehab process that much easier, as I am sure many know how difficult rehab can be. He did a series of different procedures that helped my back tremendously. Aside from teaching me exercises and proper breathing practices to work on my core, Joey utilized cupping to loosen the muscles in my back and get me moving back to my normal self. After my son had knee surgery in August of 2016 he saw two physical therapists that were in his insurance network, but was unfortunately not having good results with either one of them. As a former fitness model, I came into Progressive Motion to work with Dr. Bryan specifically after two challenging years. I had gained over 100 lbs, experienced severe muscle atrophy, lived with chronic pain from head to toe, and sustained multiple injuries from previous overtraining for many years. Update! I've been enjoying physical therapy sessions at Progressive Motion every week, and continue to adore the thoughtful, compassionate care that I'm receiving from the whole team! I alternate between seeing Ariana for physical therapy and personalized strengthening exercises (ex. weight training in the gym), Queene (pronounced: Queen + E) for massage therapy (ex. cupping + manual therapy on tight/sore muscles like IT bands and subscaps + muscle education), and Drew for chiropractic care (ex. adjustments as needed, specializing in upper cervical). Together, Queene and Drew have helped me increase my overall mobility and recover from injuries, as well as prevent new ones. They educate in an empowering, comforting way! Ariana teaches me how to continue strengthening and how to correct my posture, to increase my tolerance to higher weight-training and avoid re-injuring myself! Josh at Progressive motion was great. Not only did his passion for his job but also his knowledge of the body, mechanics, functionality, and alternative therapy flourished as he introduced new excercises and stretching that was definately not in the norm of any other PT i have experienced. He further discussed my personal activities as well as diet and habits in a bid to further enhance my PT to my individual qualms. I have 3 herniated discs and he not only showed me a new routine but presented new ideas that will alter my healing or stability particular to my condition. I love it there because whats taught is not only physical therapy but a lifestyle and i feel menial by only being able to thank him. I wish i can do more. I've had a lingering injury in my left shoulder since a partial dislocation 3 years ago. I had seen 3 different physical therapists for it. Still, I never felt like I could really train and be active in the way I wanted to without the pain coming back even after treatment. I am now strength training pain free for the first time in years (barbell, kettlebell, pull-ups). I'm a college Ice hockey player at San Jose State University who has been struggling with hip tightness and injuries (full tear of the hip flexor, strains) over the past several years now. When I was diagnosed with scoliosis as a young teen, my doctor told me it would cause me some amount of back pain forever and I'd simply have to deal with it (FYI scoliosis surgery is something you always avoid if you can, in my opinion). I grew up never learning my own movement mechanics and they simply got worse with my current training regimens. Josh Moreali not only helped me learn mechanics, he taught me how to break down my movements and do exercises to stabilize my body for the movements I needed to be able to do. He can see the smallest quirk in your body that is causing the referred pain you feel. I met Joey and Josh, years ago, I believe almost from their beginnings! They both showed so much passion for their work and it was even exemplified during Covid when they had to shut down and pivot to online home videos and teachings. PM is not your regular physical therapy center. The therapists give you their full attention for your entire session, never passing you off to another staff member mid appointment. If a different type of therapy is needed that another staff member is more appropriately trained in (massage therapy, exercise training etc) they will make a recommendation. I was so happy when I heard that they were opening PM in Redwood City as a PT/ massage therapy center AND a beautiful new gym! Very highly recommend Progressive Motion! read more
