This is the second time I had Johann assist me with ant control. Last time it was over a year and a half ago when I had massive ongoing sugar ant infestation for about a year. I had another big name pest control company do work on that where it would work then a few months later another sworn of them returning. I finally decided to see if Johann could do better as I received good recommendations from a friend. Johann is extremely knowledgeable and modest. He informed me he runs a one person business so he may not always have the time to return calls on the same day. But from my experience he is always able to return my calls the next day and schedule a visit within the week. He arrives on time or sometimes about 10 mins early. Does a thorough assessment of the property and locate where the ants are predominately at and places baits and then spray the parameter while being mindful of my dog and letting me know that what is being sprayed and used to attract the ants will not be harmful if consumed accidentally by her. Last time after his visits the ants were gone and never returned. Again that was about 1 1-2 yr ago. Last week I noticed one sugar ant inside the house and decided it was time for a maintenance visit as a prevention. So Johann stopped by today and again was very thorough and helpful. I tried for 9 months to manage a colony of tiny ants that found a way into my Seattle home, but without success. I used Combat bait traps, Terro pesticide, and diatomaceous earth. The results were temporary; after a few days or a week, the critters surfaced in another part of the house. Having failed at a do-it-myself effort, I called Johann. He promptly scheduled an appointment and dealt thoroughly with the ants. He urged patience, and while that was hard to do, his efforts were ultimately successful. Johann treated the house twice with a third treatment scheduled in the spring. The first treatment was in mid-December 2022. That treatment resulted in ant bodies everywhere, like the scene of a horrific battlefield. A second treatment in mid-January saw a diminished count. By the end of January, I saw only the occasional ant, typically a corpse. Johann's service is reasonably priced, and the results are outstanding. read more

A few weeks ago, ants had infiltrated our house. They were everywhere on the main floor: the kitchen, the living room, getting into the dog's crate, etc. It was extremely unpleasant. I called Progressive Pest Solutions in an evening panic and I am so thankful that Johan not only returned my call the next morning but was able to fit us in within a week. The day of our appointment, he showed up on time and inspected mostly the exterior to assess our situation. In chatting with him afterward, I could tell that he really knows his stuff. He ended up laying bait in trouble spots and although I expected it to take at least a few weeks, it appears that the ants are doing their work faster than expected! My wife and I have used Progressive Pest Solutions for several years, and we are very satisfied. I have had pervasive problems with odorous house ants* in two different homes: a rental duplex and our current house. Progressive Pest Solutions has dealt with the problems thoroughly. It is a one-man operation. Johann is the owner and operator. He is decidedly eccentric. As other reviewers have noted, he is likely not call to you back promptly, so be prepared to call him more than once to get his attention. He has a degree in Forest Botany (or something like that) from the UW, and he likes to 'think like the bugs': What are they looking for? What weaknesses in your home will they target? Johann's more targeted approach means that, in practice, he uses less poison than his competitors. For ants, he relies on his own, specially prepared baited poisons to deal with the nests. He does not adopt the scorched earth tactics of the big companies like Redi or Orkin, who will try to kill everything in sight. I've seen Johann solve one terrible infestation in my old rental home, and for several years he has managed the persistent threat to our Ballard house for a much lower cost, and with a lot less treatment, than Redi National. *These ants will get everywhere. They move around inside the walls, often following the plumbing system or electrical conduit; I had a problem with ants setting off smoke detectors by crawling through the optical sensors. I had no luck with the traps and poisons you can buy for yourself in the hardware store. Pay a professional like Johann to deal with the little ****ers quickly, or before you know it, you'll have hundreds of ants crawling around in your bathroom, in your pet food, in your breakfast cereal... read more

Best in the business. The first year in my house in West Seattle, I had a little black ants colonizing in February and next year late March the after that end of May and so on. Finally this year I did not really have many ants but i had come out anyway in June. He's very reasonable in price and very effective. He also wont sell you work that doesn't need to be done. We have used Johan for carpenter ants and odorous ants (the small ones). He is friendly and knowledgable. He used to work at a larger company and left due to their unethical practices. He does all the work himself and has no employees. He guarantees his work. As for what Dominica said, it is true he is disorganized (he will admit it), but I think he overcompensates in other ways. If you hire a big company, the techs who come out will probably be less knowledgeable and inconsistent. Additionally, as Jane said, he is minimalist in his application preferring to come back for free if the minimalist approach doesn't work. Four stars pending a follow-up next month. Of five different choices found through the BBB website, Johan had the information, customer-centric attitude, and honesty to get my business. Scheduled on short notice to service my house for odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile), Johan came on time, was thorough, scheduled a follow-up, and was on to his next appointment in little over an hour. His service isn't the least expensive, but I have no doubt it is going to prove to be the best value. read more

I didn't find Johan friendly. In fact I thought he made some not so funny jokes and comments. As for service when he came for our follow up he didn't even remember how the situation was previously. As for ifit works..well it's been two months and there's been no improvement, in fact I think it's worse. I would think twice before hiring this one. I have used Johann to get rid of rats in the crawl space under my house and a second time for an infestation of ants. Both times, he was exactly what I wanted: prompt, reliable, knowledgeable, and effective. He explained how and why these problems occurred and gave me his recommendations for how to resolve. The rats had to die, but they died quickly and painlessly, and he returned to remove their bodies and close up the opening they'd made to get under my house. I've used Johan for about 20 years now. I found him after trying unsuccessfully to get the other larger pest control companies to deal with the various issues (house rats, wasps, and a variety of ants). Johan is great. Shows up on time, very reasonable, minimalist regarding poison and toxic chemicals. He will also not destroy bumblebee nests unless they are absolutely a danger, since bumblebees are so beneficial and also not dangerous to people, unlike the large pest control companies that will kill anything you point them at. He will also educate you while he works if you ask questions. read more

My wife and I had some bad insect bites which we thought were spider bites so called Johan. When describing our bites during the call Johan said he could almost guarantee they weren't spider bites, and we freaked out when he told us he thought they might possibly be bed bug bites. We were SO RELIEVED when he told us that we did not have bed bugs after his inspection of our bed and the rest of our household. He concluded that our bites were probably from mites, and he seemed so sure of himself that my wife and I put our full trust and faith in Johan's conclusions. He returned a couple of days later and sprayed the entire house with some organic solution and said the bugs should disappear within a few weeks, and to call him back in 2-4 weeks if we were still getting bit. The bites never subsided and in fact continued to get worse, so after about 6 weeks we called him up and requested a follow up inspection. Johan rejected out of hand any possibility that we still had bugs stressing that they would not survive his spray, but despite my pleading with him that we were sure we still had bugs and were continuing to get bites, he was adamant that we didn't and would not honor our request to come look at our place again. His conclusion over the phone was that what I was interpreting as bug bites was instead a physical reaction to something in the environment, and he advised that I should see a doctor about this. Johan again seemed SO SURE of himself, and was so adamant about his diagnosis, that we continued to trust him and took his advice, despite our growing skepticism. My doctor wasn't able to see me for three weeks, and when he did he knew right off I was getting eaten alive by something after noting the 70-100 or so scabbed over bites all over my legs, arms, and back (Note: the scabs on my legs are so bad I will probably have permanent scarring). The day after my doctor visit (almost 10 weeks after Johan's visit/treatment) I felt something biting my back while sitting in my living room chair (where I was always getting bit) and got up and looked closely at where I was sitting and FINALLY caught one of the little buggers that had been biting me - and to my horror found out it was a BED BUG. If you know anything about bed bugs you know how devastating the 10 week delay ends up being between Johan's misdiagnosis when they were few and far between (and easier to eliminate) and the infestation we now have which is going to cost us thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours of work, and the throwing away of a lot of our possessions. When I called Johan and told him we definitely had bed bugs he was dismissive and simply said he didn't treat for bed bugs, and that was it, nothing more! I called him again the next day asking him to call back to discuss, but it's been 4 days and no call back. We have a horrible nightmare on our hands that Johan has just walked away from. So word of warning to the wise, don't be misled by Johan's air of assured expertise, his misdiagnosis can be VERY costly. read more
