It's been a while since I been to Prohibition back in its heyday when it was one of the few watering holes around the block and known to have reasonably priced drinks. So it wasn't top of mind to consider it for a brunch occasion but they do brunch pretty well! I was planning brunch somewhere else nearby but the line up was way too long and as we were trying to find another spot. A local who was waiting for the same brunch spot said she actually been to Prohibition for brunch and recommended it and said it's actually pretty good. So we decided to switch over. We ordered the smoked salmon eggs benedict, chicken and waffles, steak and eggs and French toast. I would say the food is pretty good and way better than you expect. The French toast even came with ice cream on top, so it's more of a dessert. Though we did share all our food with the group of 4 of us and the portions were just enough to satisfy all of us. The only thing is don't expect the steak to be a great cut but the rest of the portions and food are good and we enjoyed it no complaints. If you want some classic brunch options, this spot certainly delivers. read more

Went on a Friday night and the DJ was great with the early 2000s hits! There was a cozy spot at the back, and we tried their brisket poutine. The brisket is smoked in-house, which made it very tender and juicy. It was $19 but since we weren't too hungry, we shared it between two of us. As far as gastropubs go, this is one of the better ones in the city. Stopped by for brunch and got: - Prohibition Breakfast Combo: Huge!!! Has all the breakfast staples. Loved how they doubled down on the carbs with both pancakes and french toast. The star though were the meats, as both the sausage and bacon tasted fantastic. - Calabrese Mussels: Good amount, mussels were pretty fresh, and the sauce had a nice kick. Great bread to soak everything up. - Jumbo Thai Shrimp: Only miss of the meal for me, as the portion was a bit small and taste was just ok. - 8 Layer Chocolate Cake: Moist and chocolatey without being overly sweet. The side jam was a great semi-sour counterbalance. Prices are what prices are these days. Service is impeccable - friendly, informative, quick. Place is well laid out and has a great classic decor. Vibe is casual and welcoming. This has all the elements needed for a great pub. read more

Food was really good, but unfortunately the service didn't match. Our waitress made us feel neglected, and the experience was uncomfortable

We were in the area for a concert at the Opera House, so we figured we'd grab a bite before the show. We were big fans of Prohibition's Eglinton location before it closed down, so it made sense that we wanted to check out the brand's original location. We showed up around 6:00 and the place was quite full. There were no tables to be had, so we snagged a spot at the bar. It happened to be happy hour, so I grabbed myself a pint for six bucks. I wound up getting another one a little later, too. Two pints for $12! Can't go wrong with that. For food, I decided to order the Brisket Poutine ("house cut french fries topped with cheese curds, brisket and our house gravy"). It arrived a little while later and sure looked appetizing. And it tasted it as good as it looked. The perfectly cooked fries are complemented by plentiful curds and an impressive amount of tender brisket. The whole thing is tied together with rich, flavorful gravy. I enjoyed the heck out of my meal, and this joint will definitely be my go-to spot when I'm in the area. read more

Wow, after years of walking by Prohibition, I finally went in, and I am impressed. Prohibition is a Riverdale staple, and I've known many friends to go over the years. They do take reservations, but early on Friday night we were able to grab a booth. This was a great choice since it felt private, and although the bar was loud, the walls of the booth allowed for audible conversation. The space is casual, but the menu is refined. Our server Brenna was super lovely and attentive. We started with the guac and chips, and both had the pesto gnocchi as our main dish. It didn't look as good as it tasted, but it was delicious so whatever! I'll be back for sure. read more

From the signage and name of this place, I was expecting a hipster foodie experience in a rustic setting...think old barn and frites. But Prohibition Social House is more polished, like a higher end pub for yuppies...think BMWs and wine collections. Service was prompt and professional. The beer selection is on point. There are local brews on tap but also fine Belgians, that IMHO are the superior beer. Period. The Chimay was divine (now I sound like a yuppie). I had the brisket sandwich called the "Sando" on the menu, likely the short form for "sandwich" that people who own boats use. The brisket was good but not great...a little dry but pretty good for it being pulled beef vs a slab cut right from the brisket. The fries were proper bistro Belgian style, which IMHO are THE best fries. Period. My companion had the gnocchi which had a nice flavour and texture (the hardest thing to get right with gnocchi) but was sitting in too much cream sauce for my taste. Oh, the appetizer of fried cauliflower in buffalo sauce was perfect. Crispy on the outside, fully cooked on the inside, and a well-balanced sauce with tangyness, a little heat, and a touch of sweetness. Home run. So where my yuppies at? Chad? Laurel? Next time you "sail" down from your "cottage" on Georgian Bay, why not berth your boat at Ashbridge's Bay, dawn your good loafers, and stroll up to The Prohibition House for some nosh? I understand having a FOH staff who are clear in their expectations but considering it was 4:50 when we arrived, it seemed a bit premature.... Full disclosure, I am one of the top all time regulars at Prohibition. I have literally been to old management (Gastropub) and new management (Social House) Prohibition hundreds of times. In fact, I can't escape from Prohibition lol...back when they had a second location, it was in my office building so I would have lunch at one location, dinner at the second, and then go home only to find the previous owner lived in my building lol. Given that I have tried virtually everything on every iteration of menu they have had over the years, I can't possibly cover it all here so I will just share some highlights. What I love: Breakfast poutine: My absolute favourite. Pretty sure I have had at least 100 of these by now. What's not to love about poached eggs over tater tots and bacon all covered in Hollandaise sauce? I would say this is one of those "must try" meals. Brisket poutine: my "go to" outside of brunch hours. It is amazing (although the duck poutine with wine sauce on the "old Prohibition" menu was pretty spectacular) St. Louis Style Pork Ribs: Wow these are good! legit fall off the bone, slathered in tons of sauce (which i like) with great flavour...much better than the previous generation since they got the new smoker. Mac and cheese: this has changed a bit with the switchover to new management but it is still one of their signature (and best) dishes. It is really good but I don't have it that often as it is a huge portion and very filling. Honourable mentions: Shishito peppers, mushroom pesto cream gnocchi, pork schnitzel, pan seared salmon filet, smoked brisket sando What I don't love The cobb salad and nachos are not what they used to be, to say it politely. Too bad as they used to be part of my rotation but they just don't do justice to the previous versions. Also the turkey burger...uh, no. The wings and burger are ok but truthfully if I am in the mood for either of those I would rather go to dedicated wing or burger joints. A cozy gastropub in Leslieville just across the river. This spot serves elevated pub food, think calamari, brisket sandwiches and burrata with a cocktail menu and a small beer list. Overall vibe is a sports bar crossed with a speakeasy, which is an interesting combination and could fit the bill for after work drinks or a casual hangout. Had the burrata with a few beers and enjoyed the food. It was fresh and well portioned although priced a little high. The service was not great however, where one drink order was mistaken for another and another drink order was never filled. The restaurant was not very busy at the time. I am going to try really hard and not compare new Prohibition with the former. It used to be one of my favourite spots in the city: hooch hour drinks, duck confit tater-tot poutine, a beautiful (diet inclusive) menu, how can you not reminisce?! But let's talk about the Prohibition Social House! The space has not changed from its former glory, and it's cozy as always. Clean, well-spaced seating, and QR code menus - seems to meet the basic Covid protocols. My partner and I ordered a cocktail and a beer. There is a good selection of beers including international and local options. The cocktail menu is interesting, and fairly priced. I had a the "Almost Famous" - gin + glitter, how can you go wrong? For food, we ordered the brisket poutine and the prosciutto flatbread. The brisket poutine was delicious! Honestly, exactly what you'd want after a night of drinking. Or even sober. The brisket was tender, curds were chewy - overall a solid poutine for Toronto. The flatbread... honestly... why? I think the flatbread is a menu filler. Except for the arugula and prosciutto, all other components felt like a grocery store "pizza kit". You know, the premade pita-like base and processed cheese? It was not great. However, there seems to be some interesting items on the menu that seem reasonably priced, which I am sure I will explore over time. I think my 4 stars is a bit generous, but it's a great spot for casual drinks and a meal. With so many cool spots in the area, they do need to step up a little. read more

My experience at prohibition was very pleasant. I enjoyed the wall decor and ambience of the place. The fact that they serve delirium is definitely a major plus on my end. The staff was friendly but when our QR code was not working we were given a paper menu, it was a bit dirty. The food however was top notch. The condiments that came with the oyster was great, the gnocchi was phenomenally prepared with an amazing mushroom based sauce. The arancini was well prepared and tasted like a margarita pizza. Had a great time at Prohibition. Definitely a place to visit and dine in for best experience. read more

Went here for a Bloody Mary on Saturday, before we met Aimée's Aunt for dinner and to spend the night. The bloody Mary's were very good: spicy, lots of salt on the rim. They were a brighter red than I'm used to but the flavor was great. We also ordered the brisket poutine to go with as a snack; though we asked for it on tots not fries. These were amazing! Brisket had great flavor, lots of curds, tots cooked well. Service was great (it was a bit slow at 1pm however). Their brunch menu looked terrific - we'll be back to try it. Service was terrible from the moment we sat down. we had a group of 6 people, all very friendly - waitress was rude and we waited for service several times and was only given 7 chips for our $18 guacamole. the bill came, and half of our group was not aware that there was an auto gratuity of 20%, so there was an extra $70 tip added on top of that. after complaining, the waitress gaslit us saying we should have known better and that she was really nice but reluctantly gave us a $20 gift card - more insulting than anything. Didn't even mention how the manager of the bar was delivering free shots to groups of girls on the patio the whole time, very creepy. read more

Tab comes and it's $28CD. ??? BT upgraded my martini to a Belvedere (I didn't request it and he didn't mention). So there's that and, even for me, tasted watered down. We ordered the fish tacos and salmon poké for delivery via STD on a Thursday night. The fish tacos didn't come with the chipotle aioli nor the avocado cream as advertised, which was disappointing. There was only a sour cream sauce proximating crema which I couldn't eat because I'm allergic to dairy (and more reason. to miss both the other sauces). I took the batter off since I don't eat gluten, only to find the mechanically-shaped fish stick inside to be as big as my index finger -- very small for $15.00. The deep fryer oil for the fish was old and needed to be changed. The main flavour of the fish taco was stale grease. Not cool. I tried one piece of the finely cubed salmon in the poké -- it smelled! I have never ordered sushi, sashimi, poké and had it smell of going-rotten fish before. Obviously, I didn't eat it. This was really too bad as the salmon was advertised as Oceanwise, which is hard to find. That was $40 down the drain. I was very disappointed, and now slightly angry as I try to haggle more than an $8 refund from STD for almost an hour. If someone could oversee quality control here, and tweak the recipes a bit, I could see this place doing much better. But come on, smell the raw fish before you send it out! read more
