It's right off the interstate, the space feels dated, and the vibe/branding had me fearing I would be offered a lot of sweet wine. To my surprise, my glass of Synchronicity Dry was delicious and dry. In fact, St. Julian has a sugar score next to each wine on their menu, and this taste was 0.0. How helpful! Had it not been last call, I would have opted for a tasting. 5 stars for the wine, well-labeled sugar scores, and staff's hospitality, but I'm landing at four stars for the space/ambiance. This tasting room could use a modern makeover, especially with all the competition in southwest Michigan.

Arriving at the restaurant, the young woman driving pulls out a Credit card reader and quotes triple the price, and tells me she will only get paid on tips. Fortunately I had both ( owner and brokered agent) numbers. called them both--got yelled at by the broker, repeatedly thrashing me, and telling me she had us down for 12 drivers, attempting to add another 50% onto the fee. I felt like an ass arguing in front of clients, but was forced to square up with this woman, adding almost $200 to the original price to ensure that I would not get stranded, 20 miles away from our resort. Tough to find the silver lining in this one.

We sat outside overlooking the vineyard. Molly was our server. She was friendly and engaging. Lunch was a walleye sandwich with chips for hubby and the fig & prosciutto flatbread for me. The walleye had a crispy crust coating the moist and tender fish. I took a bite of hub's sandwich and it was so good. My flatbread, though, was amazing. I'm all about a good crust and this one was perfection. So crispy, yet light with all air pockets in the crust. Of course, I love anything fig and this didn't disappoint. I ate 3 squares and took the rest with me. Of course being at the vineyard, we ordered a glass of wine. My husband had the albariño and I ordered the sauvignon blanc. I didn't care for the sauvignon blanc. When the manager came by, we raved about the food but I was honest about the wine. She gave me a taste of the chardonnay and she was right. It was good. I was happy she switched my wine. The negatives are the wasps are nuisances, and there were no traps to catch them. I was dodging them the entire meal. I guess it's hazard when dining al fresco. The other annoyance was the water glasses are small, and my water was never refilled and my glass sat empty even with Molly and the manager stopping by during the meal. Since the glass is small, they should leave a bottle of water at the table or make it a point to check and recheck the water glasses. This is a nice stop for lunch on the Michigan wine trail.

Our tour guide was a retired high school history teacher and football coach with all sorts of interesting stories about the region. We passed Mount Baldy, the "living" sand dune that moves, at Indiana Dunes National Park and made it all the way down to a good view of the Century of Progress homes before making our way back. We also got to hear all about the ship, the Emita II, which is a historic ship from the 1950s, and about how it reached its current home. It was also very cute that Captain Jan had the kids come up and take turns at the wheel on the way back. There is a snack bar on the lower level of the boat, and there are restrooms on board. Free parking is available a little walk away - walk towards the Lighthouse Museum, as the dock is behind there. Definitely a great adventure!
