Stopped by Domaine Berrien Cellars on a Sunday afternoon as a group of six. It was $15 per person for (5) tastings and one got to keep their stemmed tasting glass as a souvenir. They also had a second option of $35 per person for (6) tastings and (1) additional barrel tasting. Some of our favorite wines were the Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. Our server was very knowledgeable about wine/winery details, the harvesting process, and the nearby area to give other local suggestions. We especially loved hearing about the varietals only they offer in the area (Marsanne and Oaked Marsanne). The inside tasting counter wasn't the largest but the back patio was covered and overlooked some vines and a pond. I highly recommend stopping by Domaine to try their wines! read more

This is a nice place. I have been to all of the wineries in the area at this point and I think the best places to sit outside are Domaine and Moonrise. The inside is small here but there is a view of the river outside. I tried the only 5 sweet wines they have. They were good. I tend to prefer fruit wines. Hard pass- the wines weren't great but not awful. Our server was the issue. There was no one else in the tasting room and you could tell she was annoyed we were there. She would pour the wine and stare at us and every time we would make a comment about anything she would give us a dirty look or smirk. We spent literally 15 minutes total tasting because she was rushing us. My mom didn't care for one of the wines and instead of having her try something else she just stated- well dump it out if you don't like it! Yikes! We will not be back. read more

First of all, Yelp doesn't have the correct hours of operation for this season (March). They close at 5 pm, not 6 pm. My wife and I enjoyed the variety of their wines. My wife and I had a private barrel tasting here for our anniversary. It was our first ever visit to the DB winery. The whole experience was fantastic! The wine was also amazing! The tasting room was very small and crowded and because of that we felt like we were getting somewhat pushed out to do our tasting quickly. I was shorted on my tasting and had one skipped, I tried bringing it up to the staff but it was so difficult to get her attention I ended up giving up. Had been going there for over a decade and more recently just a quick stop in. We arrived 40 min before closing time for a tasting and others were still there as well. The staff person named Cathy seemed very annoyed we were there. She immediately asked if we wanted a certain wine because if we did she would have to go get some more instead of saying hello or welcome first. Her demeanor seemed like she didn't want to be there. If we came too close to closing time that should have been posted or shared when we arrived and we would have understood. When we started the tastings she gave very little information, didn't offer a bucket to discard and would not rinse between pours. She also stood there and would not walk away or give a minute to enjoy it. She insisted we finish every drop before she would pour the next. The white wines were not chilled at all either. It became very ackward and extremely unpleasant and we were done in 15 min. We finished as quick as we could because we were made to feel so unwelcome. I've now been to six wineries in SW Michigan. Unfortunately, I'm not a sweet wine guy so I may be missing the wheelhouse of these places. To me, most of them grow what they can and make what they can. Most of these places have one drinkable offering and some of them have none. This particular place has numerous, tasty wines. The owner/winemaker seems to really want to experiment with his blending and he's turning out some pretty cool wines! It's also worth pointing out his staff know wines and the vineyard very well, which seems to be rare here. The $10 tasting fee for 5 wines with free glass is reasonable, relatively speaking. They'll knock $5 off that if you buy three. I think they could do better with that deal. If you only have time for one or two stops in SW MI, this should be one, for sure. **COVID update - indoor has room for three small groups and they have an outdoor tent. They close the room when three groups are in it. They keep things clean and sanitize very well! Very safe! read more

Domaine was our first stop when we toured the SW Mich wineries. We've been here before so we knew what to expect. Wine tastings are $5 for five tastes. On a Saturday afternoon we didn't have to wait for spot. The wine server told us about the wines as we drank them and he was pretty friendly. I'm like a semi sweet red and their Red Satin wine fit the bill. So we took home a bottle for $11. The tasting room is small and narrow so it feels more homier than the other wineries. If I could give zero stars I would! Avoid this place! Came here for a bachelorette party in between our scheduled winery stops. We are an older group of women ages 28-63. We were very tame, just planned on buying a few bottles to drink on the patio. The owner very rudely scolded us for coming in on a party bus and said it wasn't allowed. He had said we should have done our research to know we needed a reservation to come there and kicked us out. Even though there were maybe 5 other people total in there winery. He made the maid of honor feel very badly about bringing us there. All in all a very poorly run business with rude employees. Cost themselves a pretty penny. If they had just been respectful this all could have ended differently for them. So disappointed in the ownership. There are SO many better and prettier wineries in the area. Horrible customer service! We were 30 Minutes late ( our driver locked the keys in the van) and the owner of Domaine was extremely rude. We were not allowed to purchase wine since there was no room for a tasting. We were not allowed to eat the breadsticks we purchased. When we told the owner that our driver was late because he locked the keys in the van on Accident, he went on to say he would NEVER allow that driver back. It was a bit dramatic. Definitely as good as it gets. You can easily see the pride these people have in their product, and their passion for wine knowledge (and sharing said knowledge). They were constantly popping bottles open and they smell each one to ensure that there wasn't cork failure (which can apparently happen 7% of the time even when all precautions are taken... see, I learned things!! We stopped in for a tasting and pretty much everyone got a bottle or two to take home. The wine was great, the service was great, the patio was SUPER great. The grounds are very pretty, with grape vines as you drive up and then a nice pond in the back. We all enjoyed stopping here. I saw an ad for Domaine showing an art fair on 7/27. We had a fantastic time enjoying not only the art work but also the live music! Wine tasting was available with a souvenir glass for $10. The event was well attended, so much so that they could have used another food truck and maybe a booth for just light refreshments as it was a steamy day. Seating was available under a tent near the band or you could bring your own chairs. I've already put a note in my calendar for next year! Don't miss this fun filled outdoor event! read more

A group of 10 of us attempted to go to Domaine Berrien over Memorial Day weekend. I cannot really comment on their wines, as none of us made it that far. The scenario was that the group of 10 of us rented a small bus, and made this our first stop. We rolled up to the property at about 11:45-11:50AM; the tasting room did not open until 12:00PM. We were greeted and told they were not open yet, so we decided to hang out the 10-15 minutes out on the patio. They inquired about our reservation, which we had none. They were not particularly nice about us not having a reservation, so we asked if we should leave, but they said as it was only going to be opening soon they should be able to accommodate us. Some of the group grabbed our small cooler and brought it out to the patio. There were one or two people that each opened a beer, and a couple of people that opened cans of soda. A gentlemen raced up to us on a 4-wheeler and not very politely told us we needed to throw out the beer, or leave immediately. We hadn't really thought about the situation as they have a liquor license, but severely apologized, and packed the cooler back on the bus. Again they inquired about a reservation which we did not have. Thus we left the patio and headed back up by the front entrance. The gentleman on the 4-wheeler proceeded to follow us to make sure that we put away everything (which we did). He then proceeded to give our drive a hard time about not calling ahead and having a reservation. Then he proceeded to sit on his 4-wheeler about 10 feet from us and talk shit to another worker about how ridiculous it was that we did not have a reservation. Overall, we felt very uncomfortable, thus we jumped back on the bus headed across the street to Lemon Creek where they were more than welcoming and happy to take our money that we were there to spend. I gave 2 stars because the grounds at Domaine were nice, and it seemed like a nice setup. I just can't say they were very inviting, and if us not having a reservation was an issue, it should have been brought up instead of having several staff members be rude about the situation. read more

LOVED this winery on our impromptu wine tasting day. As Michael M stated, Domaine is straightforward and doesn't need gimmicks or super fancy decor. Their wine speaks for itself. A tasting is $10; 5 tastes and free glasses. If you buy 3 bottles you get $10 off. And yep, that is what we did. We found their white wines to not be overly sweet, but crisp and light. And their reds were complex and smooth. I cannot wait to enjoy these wines at my own home and remember this great winery. read more

Oh my friends, you knew I'd find my way to a winery, didn't you? I actually visited Domaine Berrien twice in the same weekend - on Saturday, with the Sibling and the PhD; and on Sunday, with the Young Lawyer and his sister, the almost M.D. Yes, I hang with August Company. Different days meant different staff members helping us, and they were both friendly, knowledgeable, and accomodating. The wine-tasting room has a whole lot of other trinkets you can buy, such as wall hangings, buttons, drinking paraphernalia, and other dumb stuff that look really good and worthwhile after you've had your five tastes. There is also a refrigerated case to buy different cheeses and meats - not too many - so you can buy everything you need for your own wine tasting party. You get a list of what's available that day, and five tastings. The staff guides you through the list, so you can taste something that interests you. It's helpful going with other people, because then you can each get different samples and try each other's. I was a little worried, on Sunday, that the staff might question the Young Lawyer and the almost M.D., because they are young, and they look even younger. I made sure they had their I.D.'s before we went. But no, excellent, friendly, and NON-condescening help. There is a small pond behind the building where you can sit and relax on a few picnic tables. There are also tables and chairs immediately outside the tasting area. I was told that Domaine Berrien is just about the best winery in the area, and I agree with that. Highly recommended. The ladies' room is clean and well-lit, too. After all those samples, you need to know this. read more

The service was the best----- they were the warmest and most patient with not just discussing their wines, but with creating an environment for you to relax and enjoy. We also found their wines to be just a bit better than every other place we had been and were pleased that we were here last. Highly recommend the Cab Franc, Lemberger, Syrah, and Merlot. I really liked this winery. It's right down the street from Lemon Creek, which I loved, so this stop was a no-brainer. The tastes are free and you are allowed to try five or six. I went right to the sweeter wines and my husband stayed with the more dry reds. Our server was very helpful, and answered all of our wine-making questions. I was surprised to learn that this winery only uses the grapes it grows in its wines - none are bought and shipped in. A couple other wineries told that to us too, and I thought that was neat. The owner and master winemarker was behind the wine bar when we went. He was super friendly and answered some of the more complex wine making questions that my husband had. Our favorites were the Pinot Noir, Grandma's Red, and the Vignoles. We took home a bottle of each. I think the most expensive bottle was the Pinot, which was $15, and the other two were around $10 each. It was raining pretty hard when we got there, so we didn't get to check out their outdoor seating area, which was a bummer. It was pretty big and looked out onto the vineyards. Would have been a perfect place to crack open a bottle of wine, sit, and relax a while. There were signs posted in the tasting room that a portion of each sale goes to fund breast cancer research, since the owner's mother had succumb to the disease. An extra point for them in my book for donating to such a worthy cause. Oh, and the tasting room overlooks part of their wine barrel sitting room. And some of the used wine barrels are for sale. I'll have to remember that when I need some new planters. I would go back in a heart beat. read more

We've tried to go here two times. The first was a few years ago on a fall weekend. They were closed. We thought they would be open since it was height of the fall season. We tried to go again this fall and pulled into the parking lot. It was raining and apparently we were there 10 minutes before they were to open. A lady came out in the pouring rain and told us they weren't open yet. It seems like they would welcome guests a little early on a day when it's pouring and you might not get many customers at all? This place is okay. Don't know what the other reviewer was talking about, be aware that tastings are NOT free! The tasting room is small but it is nice that you can see into the vat area. And the place has a very deep rich wine odor. The wines themselves are at best okay. They seem overpriced for what they are. We did love the nice deck that is attached to the tasting room. It has a lovely view with tables and chairs to sit and enjoy. We also purchased some buffalo salami and crackers to snack on. It was really cute that they put the snack in a picnic basket for transport to the deck. (The baskets are a loan while you are there.) Also, I really liked the salami. Located right across the street from Lemon Creek Winery, Domaine Berrien was the 2nd stop on our wine trail last weekend. You can check out the vats of wine in their fermenting room. And there is a nice little bar with friendly staff pouring tastes 5 for $5. So of course we had to get some! We tried: Viognier Lemberger Cab Franc Syrah Wolf's Prairie Red (bought 2 bottles of this!) Cab Sauv Marsanne and a few others I can't remember! I walked away with a bottle of the Lemberger and that Wolf's Prairie Red which is a great pasta/pizza wine. My friend and I also each bought a glass of wine to enjoy at a picnic table behind the tasting room, taking in the site of the vines and the beautiful peaceful pond out back.
