The Pronto RULES. This is where we go for gas, cigarettes and to use the ATM, because it's always cheaper than anywhere else. It's $0.99 to use the ATM machine. Is anything $0.99 anymore? The employees are always nice to me. My boyfriend asked one of the employees how it is that everything is cheaper there than other convenience stores and the employee replied, "Because the owner isn't an asshole." Nuff said. read more

I like how cheap stuff is. In comparison to the flag store a block down I go here instead. They also have free air! A few months back I didn't know I had a faulty tire and. I always came to this place to get air in my tires. There usually isn't much to be said about convenience stores, but I really do recommend coming here. read more

I put air in my tires here, it's free and you don't have to go in to ask them to turn it on (seems minuscule but when your biking in the heat you don't want to fuss around with s**t). Also a good spot for grabbing a refreshing Arizona iced tea for 99 cents while you do laundry across the street. read more

First of all I want to personally recognize Al Mak for holding on to my credit card for a day. Im still not used to having to use the chip instead of swiping. He recognized me as I walked in before I could even say anything he said "Ah your card is right here". That kind of service and kindness is rare. "Pronto doesn't make money on the gas" my friends at Pronto tell me. "It's a convenience for our customers". 'Nuff said. But I'll say more. I've had friends at Pronto for 12 years. From ole timers Erin "The Holy Roller's Hades Lady" and Animal to Diane (wishing ya a speedy recovery!) and Constance. This is just a great place to grab the daily needs and chat with your buds. Even if you're new! Come in and read our neighborhood Bard's poem about how lives touch. The store itself has a few killer products, in addition to the beer and wine selection. My current favorite is the line of "Texas Tea" Iced teas which I have not seen elsewhere. They make a sweet tea called "Sugarland" and a peach flavored tea called "Fredricksburg". The latter contains actual peach pulp. They are both really sweet and outstanding (if you have a sweet tooth). It's a little bit of Texas in a bottle. I have a feeling that that motto has already been taken, but my muse is currently sleeping with another yelper and it's the best I can muster on my own. Sorry! read more

When I first moved to Austin a roommate who had been here for 10 years or so already showed me around Hyde Park where we lived. Quacks.. Hyde Park Grill.. Fresh Plus.. and Pronto Mart. All these places seemed almost magical at the time and over the course of the years have become somewhat nostalgic to me (even though I still live pretty much in Hyde Park and visit them all the time). Anyways, nostalgia aside, here is why I give pronto mart 5 stars. It's a good place to get gas because those little locks that let you lock the handle down so the gas pumps automatically - those always work and are never deactivated. They always have a window washer/squeegee with water and paper towels. They always have free air for your tires. Inevitabely when I go somewhere else to get gas, the first thing I notice is that they deactivated the pump lock so I have to stand there pumping the gas and breathing gas fumes. I'd much rather be washing my windshields... which I couldn't do because usually the washer is missing or it's bone dry with a lot of dead bugs in the bin. Then they want you to pay $.75 for air when you just need to barely air up one tire. As everyone else mentioned - they are always friendly at the register and they have a good selection of beer at good prices. I often go slightly out of my way to get gas here just because I like to support them and hope they continue to stay around. read more

This is my favorite convenience store in Austin. I'll go out of my way just to stop through here even though I've moved out of the neighborhood. Pronto has good prices and selection on beer, cigarettes, and other sundries. They're all very friendly and they stay open until actually midnight instead of other small corner stores that turn their lights off at 11:30. Pronto always comes in clutch when trying to grab that last minute 6-pack. Cheers! read more

I distinctly remember having a conversation with a guy where he told me the two best places in Austin with both the best selection and cheapest prices on beer. One of those is the HEB at Hancock Center and the other is the Pronto Mart in Hyde Park. He was spot on. Granted, five stars is a bit much. My review is slanted in the Pronto's favor because it was practically in the parking lot of the apartment complex where I lived for a year. But, kudos, nonetheless. If you too decide to pay the ridiculously expensive price of living in Hyde Park, at least you can save money by buying your beer at Pronto and also by walking there. read more

I can't stress enough how wonderful this gas station is but more so the staff. Aside from being clean and always fully stocked (AND FREE COFFEE/AIR MONDAYS) living next door allowed me to become a regular at this fantastic establishment and I've seen just within the last six months a commitment to the community and constant improvement, the staff is always friendly and always so sweet to me. I can't believe I keep forgetting his name but the night time attendant makes my day every day I go in there. Truly great establishment. read more

I share the "I can't believe I'm writing a review for a gas station, but..." sentiment, AND, I will go out of my way any day for Pronto's. It feels like a Hyde Park community stop, not "a gas-station." Al and Satru (I really hope I got that right) are both absolutely wonderful--probably the kindest humans you will ever meet. I have never been in there and not felt genuinely cared about--which is weird, right? They consistently have some of the cheapest gas in town (I think KUT did a story on them once where they talked about how they're able to do that), and have a great selection of drinks, snacks, and other random things you might need. The 2010 reviewer who claimed he was over-charged must be out of his mind-- if anything, these guys would default to under-charge a customer. I remember going in one day, maybe a year ago, and the person in there with me seemed as though he was about to steal something. He didn't, and ended up leaving-- I asked Al before I left how he might intervene in a situation like that. He smiled and said, "Oh, I'd just talk to him. He's a person, just like me, and you can't have a job like mine unless you realize that." How had no-one mentioned Free Coffee Mondays?! (Not the cappuccino-- that's a special machine, but they always have fresh coffee brewing early Monday to start the week off right!) read more

We have been going to Pronto for years (mainly for beer and gas) and watched it deteriorate. It was 5 stars a few years ago, but not anymore. The beer selection seems to get worse all the time, and the service really sucks, especially at night. The older heavy-set guy who has worked the register at night for the last few years seems to intentionally overcharge us. We usually catch it and he mumbles an apology. My guess is that he takes advantage of the many somewhat-impaired customers who drop in at night. Not sure how widespread the overcharging is, but it's happened to us almost every time we visit at night, and It's despicable. We definitely will not go to Pronto much any longer. read more

I have a message for the "son of the owner." There is a big discussion right now on the Hyde Park listserv about how everyone is so disappointed with the new ownership. 1) The prices have gone up. Big time. All six packs are at least 10-15% higher than they used to be. 2) Even more importantly, the service is curt, unfriendly, and not fun at all. If you want to attract the Hyde Park clientele, you should generate some enthusiasm by being kinder and friendlier to customers. Pretty much the best. I work across the street/live in the neighborhood, so I'm here often for wine, snacks, gas, etc. and they have the best prices on everything. Cheapest gas around. Even cheaper air because it's free. And the employees are always friendly and efficient when you pay inside. I like that you have to pay inside. Gas and air are about all I ever purchase and/or pump at Pronto, but I might just try their cheap "enormous cup of [$0.92] coffee" if the heat fronts subside. read more

The Pronto Mart is run the way a small business should be run. The owner Hank is a great guy who knows how to build customer loyalty. Great beer selection and prices. Also, the cooler is colder than almost any other place. Best danged convenience store in Austin. read more

Prices are much higher than average, Poor selection in wines, service is limited at best with poor knowledge in the offerings.

It's hard for a convenience store to really stand out as being unique, but Pronto does just that. The interior looks pretty much like any other store, but there's a nice selection of interesting things for sale that you might not find at others, and the owner is super friendly. This is my 2nd shot at saying how great Pronto Food Mart is. It is cheery useful friendly a terrific Hyde Park neighbourhood asset. It is run by Al, the most honest kind generous and warm hearted guy I have met running a store in many years. His honesty is fantastic. Recently I left two items in his shop and he returned both of them, one as a Sunday newspaper unread, the other was a 20 dollar bill!! Go into Al's store. It is worth a visit and he is remarkable.
