These sweet, savory and crispy meat sticks are so good. These things are dangerous and addictive. I had 4! The thing is you can finish one in two bites. Anything that you can finish in two bites, should automatically fall in the category of "you can have way more than 2" haha If you're ever in Grand Haven enjoying the sites, Pronto Pups is a place you should visit. Pronto Pups are a must when you're in Grand Haven :) On the weekends, expect a very long wait, but luckily for us on a Monday early afternoon, we were able to snatch a couple up quickly. I ended up getting two for myself, one painted with ketchup, the other mustard. The dogs themselves aren't anything fancy. The batter is light and fried up nicely with a slight crunch. You probably can't say you've truly experienced Grand Haven without a trip to Pronto Pup! This place wasn't hard to find. It's across the street from Dairy Treat but really just look for the loooooong line. We visited during the coast guard festivities so perhaps the line was longer than usual. I was a little concerned how long the wait would be but thankfully the line did move along and it ended up being a little over a 20 minute wait. The batter is almost non-existent. I love the corn batter on corn dogs so I wished there was a little more of it but the hot dogs are practically fried to order and came out hot. You can ask for ketchup, mustard, or both on the hot dogs. A pup will only set you back $1.75 and if you're hungry you probably need at least two, more likely three to quell your appetite. Cash only. Small drink - 50 cents Large drink - $1 That's all they sell along with $10 t-shirts. Tip: I don't recommend the lemonade unless you like the Minute Maid lemonade you can get from the grocery store because that's what it tastes like. read more

To be clear, a pronto pup is NOT a corn dog - nope. A pronto pup is coated with wheat-based batter. Whereas the less refined corn dog is coated with, yes as the name implies, a cornmeal-based batter. And there is a significant difference. A corn dog has a much thicker coating whereas pronto pups - especially these pronto pups - have a thin and perfect coating of crusty goodness. Its a well known fact that I am a hot dog freakazoid. I will and did drive 8 hours round trip recently for a fix of pronto pups. I ate 10. And yes, I felt good about it. I have been visiting this small 8x8 foot stand on the main drag (right by the coastguard station) in Grand Haven all my life. My parents came here all their lives and the proprietorship has been handed down through several generations. They only serve pronto pups and soda - no chips, no coffee, no pickles, no candy, no bottled water, no nothing except a perfect combination of hot dog and batter on a stick with something to wash it down. And - only 4 versions: plain, ketchup, mustard, ketchup and mustard! The guy spinning the dogs into the hot oil (either the son or grandson of the founder) had a t-shirt that stated "Feeding the addiction since 1947". Nuff said. Let me start by saying I am not a "corn dog" lover. They usually make me sick. My wife and I were recently attending a Michigan wedding (near where she grew up) and she insisted we drive the 45 minutes to the infamous Pronto Pups. We made the trip, and it was well worth it. The location is great, close to the pier and lighthouse. The stand was smaller than I had imagined but it added character; which is why I loved Pronto Pups. Everything was simple, relevant and humorous. A sign on the window informed customers concerned with their cholesterol to keep on walkin'! There was also a little doggie water dish outside for "four legged friends." As for the food: Best corn dog I've ever tasted, and yes, I have had my fair share (especially for someone who doesn't even like them). The batter was thin and crispy. They make it right in front of you: dip it in batter, throw it in the fryer. After you order a "pronto pup" you are asked if you want ketchup and/or mustard. They also serve soda to wash it down. The prices were right, the atmosphere was spot on, and the service was fast and cheerful. Pronto pups is my hubby's favorite little snack shack. It's perfect for the summer and we live getting them a couple times a month.

After an enjoyable day at the beach my daughter and I stopped for a quick snack on our way out. I have heard so much about Pronto Pups and were excited to try it for ourselves. Waited in line for 20 minutes only to find out that they wouldn't accommodate her allergies (eggs and nuts) and give her a hot dog without the batter. Wow! I have honestly never had a corndog that was hand-dipped right in front of my eyes! Maybe I need to get out more, but I thought it was really cool! It wasn't what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised none the less. It was very good, much better than what you think of when you think of a corn dog. The batter was so light and crispy.
