I don't know who this restaurant is for? The food comes out cold and the portions are small. I ordered the chicken entree and while the flavor and the chimichurri sauce was really good, the portion was so small I would need more than double to feel satisfied. My biscuit was cold as soon as it came out. My friend ordered the wings and the wings were cold too. Also the gluten free option was a nice consideration, but not worth it for the cold food. This is a great spot to pick up a fried chicken salad or sandwich. This is probably my favorite fried chicken salad in all of Oakland. I always regret it when I try ordering something else other than the salad. It's so good! There is a lot of depth to it with the kale and mint leaf combo. Also the salad dressing topping it all off is fabulous! The purpose of this review is just to convey my love for this salad. The online ordering process was super easy. The space itself is a little cramped, but it's not bad if you order ahead and are only in the shop for pickup. There are typically a lot of people in the small space waiting for their food. I've always had good luck with ordering ahead. It's always been there ready and waiting before my scheduled pick-up time. In, pay, out, and then on to the coffee shop next door. The experiences here can get a little inconsistent with their other food items, but you can always count on their salad to hit the spot! And (most of the time) their fried chicken sandwich too. My go to was the "fake" sandwich which was fried tofu with slaw. I'd always get it vegan and gluten free with wedges but they no longer offer vegan/gluten free potato wedges or fries. The owner reached out to me a few minutes ago letting me know their supplier changed the potato wedges and now the coating has gluten. He said they're seeking alternative options and can't offer vegan fries anymore due to limited space. Went here for dinner with a friend. The menu was simple, but a bit complicated. Ended up with the fried chicken plate and a side of potato wedges and a root beer. Small dining area inside and also a bit stuffy, but that's okay. Seeing the 3 pieces of chicken at first seemed a bit too little. It fills you up. Nice crunch on the outside. They're pretty dense on the inside. If you could choose which pieces, I'd choose 2 thighs and a leg or something. The breast was way too dry. The jalapeno ranch sauce that came with it on the side did help though. The cornbread muffin was nice. The little tomato and cucumber salad reminded me of one you'd get at a Mediterranean spot and it cleansed your palate. Overall, not bad. Just the dry piece of chicken could have made this better. I'd rate Proposition Chicken as "pretty good" based on the sample size of the one chicken sandwich I just ate. The closest analog that can be made to it is Burger King's original chicken sandwich, not the hand breaded thing they're advertising the crap out of now. This is not a derogatory statement - I have always loved Burger King's original chicken sandwich. The lightly toasted Amoroso rolls that they put it on are a nice touch, and the slaw is just a bit spicy but not at all challenging. Working from home and in dire need of a fried chicken salad? Say no more. I usually get the chicken salad with extra chicken. It comes out to 11-12 ounces of fried chicken. Nice. Usually the chicken is decent, but once in a while it's a bit overcooked and dry (which is why one star off). In those cases, it was probably sitting with a heat source too long. Big fan of the salad overall. The vinaigrette lifts up the salad and provides good acidity. The mixed greens with diced cucumbers and halved cherry tomatoes are usually good quality. All the ingredients work well as a pretty tasty salad. Shaved Parmesan on top, although it's not fresh and seems like store-bought preshaved Parmesan. Little things would've brought this one star higher. Parking is a little annoying if you're dining in or picking up; I just park in the Trader Joe's garage if I do that. Staff is usually friendly whenever I'm there. Good spot for a quick fried chicken salad! That's the only thing I've gotten, so that's all I can comment on. :) read more

I liked their tripartite Fried/Flipped/Fake menu when it came to preparing their poultry (or in the case of Fake, tofu). So when we saw their Lakeshore Avenue location on our extended Lake Merritt stroll, we decided to have lunch there knowing we could get hearty salads here. We're Flipped kind of guys. No fried chicken for us, and tofu seemed just wrong. We both ordered the $11.95 Flipped Salad, a robust bowl of kale, romaine, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, mint, shredded parmesan, and shards of free-range slow roasted rotisserie chicken. Being one of the few places open for food delivery Sunday night, I decided to give it a go. I was torn between getting the salad and the sandwich, but soon realized I have salad in the fridge haha. Go figure. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich without mayo. I hate mayo but expected the sandwich to be dry with it missing. WRONG. I think the slaw is mixed with oil, taking away from any dryness I thought I'd be experiencing. The sage fries were pretty good. My sandwich was a decent size, and I saved the other half for later. I've been having some fried chicken cravings lately and it so happened that proposition chicken was nearby. I ordered the entrée meal which had three pieces of fried chicken, a tomato cucumber salad, and a biscuit (I substituted the biscuit for some of their sage fries.) The whole meal cost around $15. I got the order to go but I wanted to try a little bit since it was hot and fresh. The drumstick was hot and juicy, had good flavor, and was elevated with some dashes of their signature hot sauce. While walking to a nearby store my honey & I smell some chicken frying along the shopping area and my Uncle's girlfriend mentions Proposition Chicken and it's been getting a lot of business since come to the Lake Merritt area. I menu is along the wall and you can order entree A which is a Sandwich the comes which homemade Sage chips and Slaw, Entree B is a Salad and Entree C is Chicken with Tomato Cucumber salad. I place the order and ordered Entree C you can have it made 3 ways... Fried, Flipped which is roasted and fake which is fried Tofu. I order fried which comes with 3 pieces of chicken the parts of the chicken you'll get is half a breast, Leg and a thigh, cucumber salad and a Honey biscuit.I substituted the Tomato Cucumber salad for fries which I though was odd that it's a $1 extra considering they're the exact same price my total was about $16 which I though is a bit steep for what's offered, but since I wasn't eating it the verdict was still out if the taste and quality of the food is worth the price. They do offer free range chicken as well for a extra premium piece of $0.95 per piece. Everything is made fresh to order and there is seating if you want by eat here, but I noticed mostly everyone placed inside orders and online orders to go. I finally receive my order and when we get back to then to my and she finally eats she said, the chicken is good the chicken has good flavor and fried nice and golden and crispy. She said, the fries are nothing special, but would rather have fries over the tomato cucumber salad. So, I was is worth the price and she said, yes! So, I was content with her answer. I noticed the Honey biscuit didn't look like a biscuit at all, but of a muffin. Proposition chicken is vegan friendly you do only get one entree option however, many of the side are mostly of some sort of vegetable. I suppose I'd come back if my honey wants chicken. I had to reduce a star because I still don't understand the up charge for plain fries and the cucumber salad is the exact same price! I was here a few days ago just passing through town and decided to stop by and try out this place. Worst idea ever! My husband and I ordered 2 fried chicken sandwiches, 1 cola coca and 1 lemonade. As a vegetarian, I've only tried the tofu sandwich aka the fake sandwich. I've had it multiple times over the past couple of years and it's really good. Hits the spot when you're starving and want a filling, tasty sandwich. The only negative things are the chips and fries. The fries are like in n out fries and the chips are just abysmal. If you get take out, your fries will be completely soggy. There are easy ways around this, for instance, holes in the takeout container for venting. I love the interior decorations, and the staff was great, but the food was lacking. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and it was a little too crispy for my liking. It was above average on flavor, but the crispiness was hard to overcome and the bun was kinda meh. The fries that come with the sandwich were good, and you could tell they were freshly made (crispy, but slightly soft). The chicken tenders were good (I thought they were better than the sandwich) but you only get three small strips for like $8 and it doesn't come with a side. And they have lots of hot sauces to choose from which was awesome. The fries were ok, but the rosemary(?) or some other seasoning was a bit overpowering. I do not know why it has taken me a long time to try this eatery. I had the entree order which came as a three-piece set-up with a side of their cucumber salad, sweet biscuit, and signature sauce. I really thoroughly enjoyed the chicken because it was crispy and well-seasoned. The batter they use I liken to fish-and-chips because it's airy and flaky.
