We were tempted by the "going out of business" sign. We were greeted with immediate red flags: 1) lots of fake designer jewelry (fake cartier, fake van clef). 2) owner was desperate to sell me diamond earrings that were NOT certified. They also did not have screw backs. He kept lowering the price which was sketchy. 3) the owner tried to put a necklace on my friend and was super super creepy, grabbing and massage her neck and making her feel so uncomfortable. She was so shaken about the experience, I'm so angry this happened. Avoid! read more

I rarely write reviews but am compelled to warn potential customers about Prospect. I bought a necklace and admit it was a spontaneous purchase. Once I got the necklace home, I realized the quality was very poor after comparing with similar items on line. In sum, even though I was purportedly given a significant discount, I was overcharged. I never wore the necklace and decided to return it. When I went to return the necklace, I was greeted by a scowling owner. He first tried to claim I paid a lot less for the item than I paid. Luckily, I had a receipt. Benny then steered me to less expensive items he claimed were an even exchange. After looking at several items, it was clear to me that he was making i up prices as we went along. He wanted to make money off the exchange. I didn't trust a word he said. I exchanged the necklace for a different one and am quite certain I lost on the deal, again overcharged. I was refused a new receipt and mocked for wanting one. Normally, I would have raised the roof off the place, but I honestly just wanted to get out of there. The vibe is super creepy, as other reviewers have described. It is not a reputable establishment. Oh my god. You have to come here and buy some jewelry. We walked in on a whim as I was on the hunt to buy my poor aged mother (who's turning 84) a nice diamond cross. Lol! Shirley helped us right away- she's the daughter of the owner of the store (Benny Levi). They are having a massive sale because they're closing the store because her dad wants to retire. Good prices! I picked out a beautiful 18 karat white gold 5 carat diamond cross with a chain that was appraised at 8000 for half of that. We decided to come and look around the area and patronize some of our local businesses. My husband saw a necklace in the window, I saw a beautiful ring. We went inside ready to purchase. Two different sales men walked by us and didn't even acknowledge us as we were looking in one of the cases. I finally looked at my husband and let him know the color of our skin and our money obviously was not accepted there. We left our and continued our day. WARNING - I purchased what was described to me as a "black opal". I sent it to GIA to certify and it came back as a TREATED opal. So it was not a black opal made by Mother Nature but by man and therefore worth a fraction of what I paid for it. I called Benny to tell him of the GIA findings and that I wanted a refund for the item as it was not accurately described to me. After some back and forth (claiming "all opals are treated", "very common", "I got what I paid for") he finally agreed to refund my money but he wanted the GIA certificate in exchange and he refused to pay the $170 for the certification. When I went to make the return Benny then told me he had to deduct a $50 credit card fee since he had to pay that. When I told him I paid $170 for the GIA that I was giving him his exact response was "I don't care". Which he should have cared about since it proved that what he sold me was not a 100% natural black opal. But an opal that was treated to look black. He also complained that he was "losing money" on this transaction Overall this left me with a very very bad experience and I am posting this as a warning to customers to make sure of what you buy before spending your hard earned cash. You may think a business is reputable from the outside and they are always so nice to you when you're buying something - but it is how they handle you as a customer when there is a dispute or issue with their product that tells you if they deserve to be in business or not read more

LOVE IT! My husband and I look young, really young, and we know it. Without hesitation, however, the lovely woman who worked on this Sunday greeted us warmly and showed us the pieces that caught our eye. Worked out well in her favour too, since we ended up leaving with a beeeaaautiful necklace! They have unique pieces, classic designs and all high quality. If they are running a special, you know it's because they really want to get rid of it, they know it, and they are willing to work with your budget (within reason of course). I had to find the time to write this review! I've been a nervous wreck all week trying to find my mom the most beautiful 60th Birthday present. I decided to meet up with my friend for coffee and a sunset beach walk on Prospect street after a whole day of shopping at 2 different malls! My friend was running late so I walked into Prospect Fine Jewelers for a browse thinking there is no way I will be able to afford anything here. It's the most beautiful jewelry store I've ever seen in my life! It looks like a huge exquisite showroom sparkling with an endless variety of merchandise. I was greeted by a very elegant and kind gentleman who owns the store. I couldn't believe how down to earth he was considering that I was in jeans standing in a jewelry store straight out of a fairy tale. He took the time to help me find a gorgeous ring I thought I could never afford. I had just seen one very similar in size and quality that morning at the mall at a store that did not compare to the elegance of the one I was standing in. I couldn't believe that he gave me the ring for almost a thousand dollars less!! I was shocked!! This store is a total rip off. They are currently having a bs retirement sale. We brought my wife's ring in to replace a broken stone. The sales lady was wonderful. She secured a stone and e mailed a picture to my wife. We told her it looks great and go ahead and get it. When we went to pick up the ring, it totally had another stone. Benny, the owner, tried to talk my wife into taking it. We had to come back and speak with his sales lady who said "this isn't the same stone". Benny wasn't happy, held the ring hostage until we paid a bs fee for mail and fixing a prong. He said $150 and he wants cash. We gave him a debit card and he charged $162 for tax. I wouldn't trust these people for a moment. There are too many stores out there that know how to treat customers. read more

This store has been in business in La Jolla for 30+ years, although I think its current location is larger than its last. The owner is really honest, and he really prices everything very fairly. Like Charlie W., I would not recommend this place for anything! I purchased a discontinued watch which was fairly expensive. I wore it for dress only, but after a year, I could not pull the pin to change to Standard time. It was under warranty, so I took it back. They wanted me to return it to Ebel, the manufacturer, but I insisted that they do it since, I bought it from them. Ebel said the inside was rusted and required repairs totaling about $800. I refused and they sent the watch back. Prospect wanted to charge me for the shipping! I spoke with the manufacturer's agent and became assured that nothing I did would have caused the problem. Prospect denied all responsibility, as did the manufacturer. Finally, to break the logjam, I offered to pay half, but Prospect refused to pay anything.
