Pizza is absolutely delicious in every way! Hands down the best pizza I have ever had! I had goat cheese and spinach and it tasted like every ingredient was fresh. The pizza dough and sauce was total delight. The pizza was expensive but in this case it was worth every penny! This is my new weekly splurge! The service and ambiance is like visiting your favorite hangout spot except this was my first time here. I was greeted at the pizza stand with a dazzling smile and a warm welcome. Nice atmosphere but apparently if your service dog isn't small, they're not allowed inside. we had him inside for over an hour with our group and took him out for a break and was told when re-entering he's not allowed inside. The worker said she just got there so apparently depending on who is working you may or may not be allowed to bring your dog? read more

My wife and I decided to take a day trip up to Charlotte from Columbia SC. Found this place and decided to give it a try. Plenty of parking and lots of places inside and out to eat. They place was very clean including the bathrooms. From the time I ordered and had my pizza was less than 15 minutes. The pizza was awesome and the beer was even better! I ordered an extra pizza to take home and a four pack of Queen Charlotte. (Very good Pilsner)! If all that is not good enough check out the company's website. Stopped by Sunday for a late lunch; great service, food, and all-around feel. We split a salad (the Bob Ross), meatball appetizer (huge, and my wife says the best ever), and a pizza (Tommy Callahan/meaty deliciousness). I'm getting a Pavlov thing going just thinking about it. I had two beers that were both top notch; 1 ale and 1 IPA. We appreciated that the staff were very conscious of Covid safety precautions, and were fortunate enough to chat with one of the managers, Clarissa, about their efforts and plans for future additions/improvements. As a frequent visitor to Charlotte, Uber assisted me with a Sunday afternoon pub crawl in the area of Southside Drive Protagonist . There are several breweries in a few blocks. In each establishment my beer was served in a proper and appropriate glass vessel. At Protagonist it came in a wide-mouth, clear plastic cup which rendered the beer tactilely and visually flat within minutes. The staff was courteous , the establishment attractive. Top your pizza off with some hot honey and prepare to have your socks blown off! My boyfriend and I came here on a date night and ordered the Dr. Steven Brule and it was a mushroom sauce based pizza which was unlike any thing I've ever tried on my pizza. The pickled red onions were also I would've preferred for the crust to be a bit crispier so next time I visit I'll ask them to leave it in a few minutes longer. We also did a flight of beer and by far our favorite was the notorious RBG with a hint of ginger. It's sincerely my new favorite beer so I'll definitely be back soon. read more

Only my opinion, but protagonist is good for beer and that's it. Don't order food here. The food counter will lose your order and give you a half baked comp for their mistake, plus will move your order right to the back of the line when they mess up. This has happened multiple times. The pizza is only ok anyways, so it's not worth the wait/service. There are better food options right up the street. Definitely would recommend the Queen City beer if you end up here, but if you have the option go to Yancey right down the street. Better food, better service. 2 stars for good beer, 3 stars removed for treatment of customers. read more

Love coming to protagonist. The beer and the food is always good, and I love sitting outside on the patio. My favorite is the Jim Gaffigan. I questioned the staff and they were currently making said pizzas. I told them it's been a while and that we were ready to leave. They refunded the pizzas, realizing it had been a while.
