HAHAHAHA. this place is hilarious. I had told my husband about the reviews, but not my brother in law, so he was quite surprised. We drove there from Carmel, the place looks like it used to be an exit directly off the highway, but no longer the case, you have to wind your way there through some back roads. There are only 2 benches for outside seating - so "to-go" is your best option. This was supposed to be a "light lunch" so we ordered 1 bowl of soup split 3 ways (he gave us 3 soups which we ate while we he prepared the other food we ordered), we ordered 1 tri-tip sandwich and a 1/2 rack of ribs (comes with pasta salad). While we were eating our soups - he hands us some pasta salad. Then we get our sandwich and ribs and go outside. We had requested that the sandwich be cut into 3 piece so we could split it, Minor quibble would be that the sandwich "engineering" could have been a bit more thoughtful as iit was a bit messy. I actually keep trying to love try-tip and I never do, but here it was a bit fatty and sliced thinly on the sammy. Sandwich comes with: lettuce, tomatoes and HOT Fritos. It was very VERY good. The ribs were my least favorite (but my brother-in-law's favorite). I think he should offer a combo pork and tri-tip sandwich. As we were sitting on the bench outside - he comes out with 4 slices of his pork...we dig into that too...as we are about to pack up and leave (with many leftovers) , he comes by with some chicken that had just come off the grill...I bet if we had waited, we would have gotten some sausage too! Well, positive things- customer service was good, the chili was flavorful, although for me, it had too much heat/spice that ended up not being enjoyable, but my husband liked it. We got the tri-tip and it was large! ($18.50 ea.) It had the roll, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and I think chili Fritos, and bbq sauce. I was not a fan of the sandwich; I tried a piece of meat first which the consistency was tender. But the flavor was not for me, (insert stank face) it had a lot of smokey-lighter fluid taste that left a bitter after taste in your mouth. But my husband, was like "you've got to eat the whole thing all together to get the whole experience and flavor". So, I did, and it was better. But I still have that bitter-smoke taste. I had my daughter try it, just to get her opinion and she agrees with me. I personally would not go back for the bbq food but would not mind trying something else on the menu in the future. The place was a little out of the way to get to, and the market was really small. I guess I did not realize it was a market and thought it was a sit-down place. Is this the best BBQ that I've had in CA? Probably, yes. Is it worth pulling off the 101 to stop and eat here? Absolutely, yes. I cannot get over how good this food is. The ribs were practically perfect, with just the right amount of dry rub. These might well be the best Memphis-style ribs that I've ever had. The tri-tip sandwich put this place into the stratosphere. A unique mix of BBQ sauce (unique, though not necessarily my favorite kind) and Tri-Tip mixed with various crunchy things (Fritos? fry-like things?) in a generously sized portion and bun make this sandwich something else. I would drive 50 miles to have this for lunch everyday, and by the looks of the parking lot many locals would agree. The owner was incredibly friendly and checked on us after we started eating to bring extra napkins and plates. It's a bit of a drive off the 101 these days, but definitely worth it.
