I quickly realized that many people rely on storage companies for everything from holiday decorations and inherited furniture to all the things they simply cannot part with. That is where Public Storage comes in. It is the largest self-storage provider in the world. Fun fact: the very first Public Storage opened in El Cajon, California, in 1972, and its first customer was an STP Motor Oil distributor who needed a place to store cans out of his driveway. You probably recognize the company by its signature orange doors, intentionally designed to catch the attention of highway drivers. Today, Public Storage operates more than 5,000 facilities nationwide, with a few policies renters quickly learn. For example, they do not prorate monthly rent, so it is best to move out before your billing date. Like many storage companies, they attract customers with impressive move-in specials. But once your belongings are settled in and the convenience sets in, the monthly rates can rise dramatically. To be fair, they are upfront about the pricing structure, but realistically, no one moves into storage unit for only a month. We ended up at the Oakland Park Public Storage when we had to quickly liquidate a large business and needed space to sort, organize, and store inventory. At one point, we rented multiple units across different cities, but now we are down to a single unit here. Security is decent, with two gated entrances before you can access the property. Once inside, the place feels enormous. The facility stretches alongside the train tracks, so the sound of freight trains rushing by become part of the background noise. Along with household belongings, people store boats, trailers, and work trucks. At night the environment feels less safe. There are often sketchy people lingering around the property. I never feel comfortable leaving the car unlocked or unattended. Vehicles occasionally slow down as if sizing up both you and your belongings. I never saw anyone living inside a unit, but some unhoused people use the facility to store what they own. One elderly man regularly sorts through his possessions in the late afternoon before heading back out on foot for the night. Most interactions with Public Storage happen online these days, but the one time I went into the office, the employees were surprisingly kind. They even gave me an ice pack from the first aid kit when I needed one. There is also a large RaceTrac gas station directly across the street, which makes it convenient to grab drinks, snacks, or fuel while loading and unloading. If you need extra space, Public Storage will do the job. Like most storage facilities, it is equal parts convenience, necessity, and the emotional challenge of figuring out what to hold onto.

I have made multiple trips to the local office, only to be told they couldn't help. I then called corporate, waited on hold, and was told that the local office had to complete the merge--exactly the opposite of what the office had been telling me. For over two months, I have been stuck in a cycle of being passed back and forth between the office and corporate with no resolution. No one seems willing or able to take ownership of the issue. To be fair, the lady at the local office was very nice when I spoke with her on the phone. However, being friendly does not solve the problem. I still have to use two separate logins just to manage and view my two storage units, which is completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In 2026, there is no reason customers should have to deal with something this basic. Public Storage needs to come out of the dark ages and modernize its systems. To make matters worse, Public Storage has raised my rates three times within a single year. Paying more while receiving this level of customer service and outdated technology is unacceptable. At this point, I will be moving both of my storage units to another company. I will be actively looking at other storage providers within the next month. I expect better communication, accountability, and customer service from a company of this size.

When I arrived there, the unit available was multiple feet smaller and none of my things would fit in it. They then told me that the size on the website 5 x 10 was just an estimate. This unit was closer to 2 x 7. since I had already paid my movers and they had already dropped my stuff off. I did not have any other option to go to another facility after completing my entire move. Rather than honoring my rate and giving me another 5 x 10 unit they charged me more and put me in a 6 x 9 claiming it was larger. The price save charged me for this is 109. After three months, they said that they are increasing the price by $60. This place is a total scam. Beware! Worst business I've ever dealt with.

It's been a very long time since I received such great customer service. He was soo professional but I think he could tell I wasn't having the best day and he turned it all around! I got all the information I needed and he even wrote it out for me so I could think on it. He gave me a walk through of the building and showed me what kind of units they had and helped me a get a better idea on what size I'd need for my belongings. I thought it was really cool that the units are air conditioned AND they have security cameras! Not only was he so kind and professional and funny and efficient, he also gave me a cool little hand sanitizer spray AND he had cold water for me! I'd come back over and over again just to talk to jason and get that kind of service! Truly turned my day around and I will be back to get my unit! Give this man a raise!

The guy who took over said nothing was in there when he got the unit, Spoke to the manager said he didn't know what to say, what to do, or where my stuff was. I lost about 600 dollars worth of stuff. Said they would call me back several times, never did. I had to do all the calling. I asked for a refund, can't even get that back. Horrible way to treat a service member. Owners Could care less what happens. Highly recommend going somewhere else.
